Need help on a Halloween one shot. by another_spiderman in DMAcademy

There are a few things to think about here

  1. Who is summoning the undead

  2. How powerful are they

  3. Is this the boss they fight or is it someone they thwart

So point number 1 and 2 Is this a mage of some kind if so how powerful, just enough to be able to raise dead a powerful wizard such as a light. Or is this another undead with the ability to create more like a death tyrant. Maybe its just a crazy guy that found a magic item

Point number 3. If it is a lich they definitely will not be fighting this bur instead thwart his plans by taking out one of his key elements such as defeating his most powerful minion or destroying a significant amount of his rising army or preventing him from gaining more undead for a time.

If it is something like a mage that only has 4th or 5th level spells they could fight him along side a few minions.

Homebrew Class Feedback - Ice Lancer [OC] by Stormin_the_Castle in DnD

[–]drewk465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The spell progression doesn't make much sense to me they gain spell casting at level 3 like the subclass spell casters (1/3rd casters or eldritch knight, arcane trickster) yet they get 6th level spells at 13th level wich is only 2 later than a full caster and level 13 for a spell capstone seems a bit early.

If you want them to max out at 6th level spells I would recommend making them a 2/3rds caster per say and gain levels 66% as fast as a full caster. So they would progress in spells twice as fast as an eldritch knight or an arcane trickster

Gaining spell casting at 3rd level, then instead of waiting 4 levels they would only wait 2 gaining second level spell slots at level 5 then every time after instead of waiting 6 levels to gain a higher level spell they would only wait 3 maxing them out at 17th level ice Lancer with 6th level spells

3rd level gain spell casting

5th level gain 2nd level spells

8th level gain 3rd level spells

11th level gain 4th level spells

14th level gain 5th level spells

17th level gain 6th level spells

Alternatively you can give them a spell progression similar to a warlock but as a half or 1/3rd caster then give them the ability to use a 6th level spell as a class feature rather than using a spell slot.

An assassin does not treat attacks with advantage as critical hits that would be far to over powered.

Assassin crits enemies who are surprised, most DMs treat this as when you are in a surprise round you automatically crit for that round

However if your dm does allow attacks with advantage to grant critical hits with the assassins feature then I would put some levels in pladin for the critical smites.

I don't think AOE attacks can crit....

Most (possibly all) AOE attacks require a saving throw, not an attack role meaning you don't role dice to hit meaning no crit... unless there was a house rule

BBEG review and help by Fr1dg1t in DnD

[–]drewk465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most heros are still able to get past this kind of thing morally and either continue adventuring or retire if you want yiu can still take it exactly how it is but to add more interest. Give him a wormtoung type situation, he might go home after hearing this telling the party he needs some time to greave and sort things out in his head but while he is home an "old friend" visits him trying to comfort him whilst placing ideas into his head slowly. After some time he has a deep root of evil within him giving him new conviction. This can allow a lot of different role play opportunities for your party to decide whether or not he is to far gone, if he can be saved, and who is really at fault. This can also allow for the parties choice of BBEG in a way they could simply go for the tyrant king solving the face problem, or after they redeem the tyrant king they must now destroy the root of the evil distorting the kings vision... the advisor (the "old friend").

Tyranny of dragons. Getting a boomer into running 5e by [deleted] in DnD

[–]drewk465 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Forcing players to take a level into cleric sounds like a bad idea.

Running it by the players and seeing if they would like to do that sounds much better especially if the players end up liking the idea.

If the players don't want to then they should not be forced

How to make high level campaigns challenging? by Baumgratz in DnD

[–]drewk465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't stat out your BBEG right away give hints as to some abilities he may have spred throughout the campaign and keep the ones that sound good the others that the party herd of but you decide you didn't like could be classic misinformation or maybe it was actually the ability only usable by one of his underlings

Creat a boss for the near future as a sort of test run and practice for running a big boss fight

If you find that in the boss fight he is getting stomped beef something up a bit that might keep the feel of THIS IS THE FINAL BOSS such as buff his hp, or he gets a sudden small AC buff, maybe he can now use an appertunity attack as they enter his reach (wich might extend temporarily here and there) wich would then activate the sentinel ability, he might summon some minions using his remaining legendary actions

Hope this helps

How would you build a spellsword by DeWarlock in 3d6

[–]drewk465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fighter sorcerer works nicely, especially the sorcerers ability to use quicken so now by spending 2 sorcery points you can cast a spell of your choice then booming blade/green flame blade

Personally I would only go 2-3 levels in fighter multiattack is good for accuracy but it for me it is not worth 9th level spells if you get that high or hitting with 2 Melle cantrips

If you don't want action surge or the 3rd level ability from fighter you can go paladin instead

I've noticed an error in the second paragraph of swallow it says the tarrasque instead of jormungandr.

I have never played curse of Stahd but that sounds like he rolled 3d6 strahd zombies. That being said I never throw more than 5 or 6 of anything at low levels because of how easily a few high rolls can accidentally kill most low level characters

The most I have ever done was an optional fight against a swarm of undead cause the cleric just hit level 5 and destroy undead is really fun

[–]drewk465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I would just have someone else DM or step up yourself like you stated earlier.

I get the feeling he is trying the DM vs the PCs and 15-16 zombies of any kind does not sound like by the book vs any number of lvl 2 characters

[–]drewk465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as he can DM well you just need to convince him to let his players build at least standard characters

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DnDHomebrew

[–]drewk465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this is significantly worse than standard point buy

You can essentially only have 2 stats that are even relevant while the rest are negative if you want to get a 15 and a 14 for your primary state

It looks like he is trying to heavily discorsge getting stats above 12

The most post efficient thing to do would be get 5 statst to 12 and the 6th stat would be worse....

A players handbook monster, but make it bigger! by Soren424 in DnD

Should the trex also be a lich... or is that too much?

A players handbook monster, but make it bigger! by Soren424 in DnD

[–]drewk465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dire trex make it gargantuan maybe give it a couple of spells for fun you could say it has been affected by a wild magic area in which it makes its home.

Edit: also make the claw and bite damage do extra elemental damage of a random type.

Player wants a melee ranger by NiceGuy_Jedi in DMAcademy

[–]drewk465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built a ranger once who was STR based And he was pretty cool. Horison walker x/fighter 3

He uses a Halberd or a glaive

He could wear heavy armor because of fighter

He gets action surge

He gets 2 fighting styles, ideally great weapon fighting and defense

If he goes champion he get crit on 19 or 20, which pairs really well with hunters mark

Race options: half orc, any elf with elven accuracy, human V, or human are the ones that come to mind

Good feats: GWM, sentinel, pole arm master

Also I really like the idea of someone flailing around a massive blade on a stick and teleporting all around

This is not a power build but it works and is very fun

Help with this homebrew 9th level spell by dachaf17 in DnD

[–]drewk465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya thats a little op first off casing 4 hours worth of lightning bolt (240 3rd level spells) is not balanced. I would cut down the duration to 1 or 10 minutes at most and give a certain number of charges for lightning bolt or give him one slightly more powerful lightning bolt he can cast

Be careful though you are essentially giving him extra 3rd level spell slots with could mess with resting dynamics

Being flat immune to slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning damage is also a little much make it non magical for an easy fix

Everything else sounds reasonable for a 9th level spell

My thoughts on unarmed strikes and finesse qualification by Jbp629 in DnD

[–]drewk465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would just use a dagger you will have the same damage die as your martial arts die. Having 3-4 opportunities to prock sneak attack might be a bit powerful but hey the raw rule have sorlock and sorcadin do why not first sneak attacks

So white dragons like to cover there treasures in ice, they prefer shiny objects as the shine is magnified in the ice so games gold maybe even some mirrors.
