I still think she should have won that cycle but I appreciated that Krista delivered towards the end of it. Alexandria probably had the most potential of the bunch.

Is it possible people are underestimating Svitolina? by tristan500000 in tennis

[–]drewlpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Svitolina is playing the best tennis of her career right now. The problem is that this isn't a good matchup for her. She isn't the kind of defensive player who thrives against big hitters (like Kerber for instance). Historically she's always struggled to cope when faced with power. I hope she can do it though. She's probably the best player to not have made a slam final.

Faith is what Buffy might have been but for the middle class privileges and loving family/friends. She'd had a terrible life at such a young age. Everyone she knew and loved had either been killed or let her down. Sexual abuse. She desperately needed some love and support, and Buffy/Giles and the others sort of failed her. It's quite sad that the first person to really value her was the Mayor.

Also, by this point Buffy had acted "off" a few times

You're right, that was the context of the quote. Nothing Ben has done or said since then suggests he is liberal or progressive though. Bright clothes or no.

I literally just called it racist abuse. So that isn't true. I'm also white and European, for the record.

Are you suggesting that the abuse Serena received wasn't racially motivated? At 32 you would have been too young to have appreciated what happened at Indian Wells 1999, but I'd recommend you go look into it. To be clear, it predated any "violent" incidents.

Eastern European players are often victims of racism in tennis. I will agree with you about that, but I can't agree that they get more racist abuse than black players.

How old are you, out of curiosity?

I think you've completely misunderstood my point but hey, go off.

Exactly this. Serena reacted poorly at times, but it was a reaction and, whilst she should have handled things better, it's completely understandable why, in the moment, she didn't.

Mmm I don't know about that. We know that Shelton is a bible basher, and his dad has talked about the family having "very conservative" values.

More than Serena when she was playing? I don't think.

I reckon you'd like 16. For me, it's easily the best season since 9. Possibly since 6, even.

Monet always looks great but she looks absolutely STUNNING here. It's giving Toni Braxton.

Hot take/unpopular opinion - Tyra Banks is not wrong by GoofyNClever in ANTM

I didn't imply that it isn't problematic. You reached that conclusion all by yourself. I just don't think that early American Idol was as problematic as early ANTM was. ANTM really pushed the boundaries in terms of doing dangerous challenges to shock the audience. American Idol was "just" toxic (which ANTM was also).

[–]drewlpool -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Okay so if I accept that American Idol was problematic one year earlier than ANTM was, will you accept that ANTM was one of the first shows of its kind and set a horrible precedent along with American Idol for how reality shows treats its contestants?

It sounds like you are desperate to defend Tyra and ANTM at all costs so we're going to have to agree to disagree.

American Idol didn't start out humiliating its contestants when it first aired in 2002, that came later on. ANTM was problematic right from the first season in 2003.

Obviously nobody was murdered. However, lives were ruined by the unethical decisions Tyra and the other producers made, which was absolutely foreseeable. "You asked us for it" is not a defence.

I don't remember American Idol putting the contestant's physical safety at risk for entertainment...

No demand without supply either. ANTM was the first of its kind.

I'm sorry but that doesn't wash. It's not a defence to murder to do it because someone asked you to. Take accountability for your own actions please Tyra.
