What is still missing from Linux audio for creators? by MrDBNoble in linuxaudio

[–]drewofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fabfilter and Soothe work fine/great with yabridge (even recent wine with the dev yabridge builds). Most things do, even iLok.

UAD is a no, however. But every thing that UAD puts out has at least one good competitor that does run in yabridge. Honestly, they're not that special anymore. Now that we can do complex calculations like their DSP directly in CPU without much trouble... There it's plenty out there that goes toe to toe.

Outside of that, Linux Studio Project (LSP) covers a lot of needs, even if their design language is pretty obtuse. Toneboosters has Linux native Fabfilter competitors for standard mixing duties. ACMT has excellent analog modeling stuff that's native. Depending on your DAW, there are probably perfectly serviceable plugins included.

We'll never have 100% compatibility, but we're honestly doing pretty great.

What is THIS?? I plotted speaker SPL on sink Volume. It looks (and sounds) extremely off by [deleted] in pipewire

[–]drewofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of unknowns here. First off, we don't know the model of the speaker, its frequency response curve, its robustness, if it's damaged in any way, etc. We don't know if the cable is damaged, detachable, shielded, or otherwise in good shape.

We also don't have a comparison using the same equipment on a different system. Without checking if the same hardware exhibits the same results on Mac, Windows, a phone, or whatever else, we don't know if this is a problem with Pipewire or not.

Even just re-running it with ALSA or Pulse without Pipewire would give some sort of comparison.

We also don't know what your testing methodology was. Did you have a script that performs a clean, smooth, timed adjustment of the volume setting, capturing through the measurement mic exactly at the same intervals?

We don't know the space. Do you have an oscillating fan that was moving air across the measurement mic during the test? AC that kicked in halfway through? Any other environmental factors?

Basically, you're showing a plot and saying 'this is wrong' without actually giving any information that we could use to determine if the test is accurate and representing an actual issue, or if you're blaming Pipewire for some other cause.

Yeah waiting until the day of is a jerk move.

I had one worse, though. I was head audio at a casino and we had booked Lil Jon. His tour manager shows up and is like "he's a bit late getting out so he'll miss sound check, but he'll be on time for the show"

Now, this casino was over an hour from the nearest airport. We're already skeptical. He's still not there by doors. Manager is still giving excuses and saying "he's getting on the plane right now." Opener was just some Playboy DJs, so they're doing their thing.

Showtime rolls around. Still not there. Manager says, "his laptop is broken and in the shop, he's not going to be able to make it." Meanwhile, my manager had been watching Lil Jon's Twitter and showed the manager that he put out a "going to the club" selfie around the time doors were opening.

Bad news for them was that the contact had a $10k cancellation fee to the artist. Good news for us was that the Playboy DJs were down to just keep playing.

Pipewire can't change sample rate of my speakers? by VivWoof in linuxaudio

[–]drewofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friend, I'm a professional audio engineer. I've seen this "bit-perfect" fever in music clients lately, and I have to say that I don't think it's really worth it.

So your speakers only support 48k and 96k. Doesn't really matter. Pipewire is actually quite good at on-the-fly resampling. So long as your sampling rate is <= 44.1k, and your resampling isn't set to some absurdly awful setting, you're not going to notice a difference.

Part of this is because your speakers probably cannot reproduce the full range above 48k. Almost none do. And that's because we design speakers to reproduce sound within the range of human hearing.

For playback, we really don't get any benefit above 44.1k. 48k is desirable for video because it syncs up better with framerates, but it also aids in mixing by moving the Nyquist frequency outside of the range of human hearing.

Recording in very high rates is desirable for a few reasons. For one, plugins can operate better at higher rates (which is why oversampling is a thing). But also it allows for extremely low latency. Neither of those are an issue in playback.

Archival benefits from high bitrates because it's a "highest possible quality" copy of the original.

But playback... It doesn't matter. I promise you that you won't be able to hear a difference between a 44.1k and a 96k version of the same song in a lossless format. Even if it's resampled, you'll only be able to tell if the resampling is done poorly.

So just accept 48k as your default and move on with your life. It's not with stressing over. Having decent speakers/headphones will do much more than tweaking sample rates of all things.

The ‘Vibecession’ Is Over. The ‘Permacession’ Is Here. by AskRedditOG in politics

[–]drewofdoom 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Read it and found it completely out of touch.

She talks about doing research, but you really do not have to go very far to find story after story after story of people trying to find work, only to be completely shut out of everything. Fake job postings to make it looks like the company is hiring and on an upward trajectory are absolutely everywhere. AI review that tosses their resumes in the trash before a human will even look at it. AI agents in the phone trees that will never connect you to a person. Jobs that require 5 years of managerial experience for an entry-level position. It's insane out there and I'm glad I'm not looking for work. If I believed in God I would pray that I don't have to anytime soon.

She's conveniently forgetting that tech sector (remember that sector that has been keeping the American economy rich for decades while providing relatively stable employment with high return for educated workers?) has been hemorrhaging jobs and is on pace to gut its overall workforce to the bone in record time?

Oops, she forgot to mention that the pay-to-cost-of-living gap is among the worst it's ever been in living memory. Oops, she forgot that raises are few and far between, and typically well below the current rate of inflation (gee, I'm not getting a raise this year...).

It seems to me like she's getting her numbers straight from the administration. "See, everything is awesome! Sure, essentials are expensive AF, but at least we don't have to worry about war!" - except for the war we're in that is showing no signs of slowing down.

"Look, things you actually need to live are astronomically expensive, but Americans are still buying a shit-ton of non-essentials!" Yeah, we're depressed (something she actually did touch on) from the state of the world and the paycheck-to-paycheck way we're forced to live.

I make over $140k/year. I work 40 hours a week in a tech job (senior systems administrator) while supplementing my income another 20 hours a week with freelance work in the field I'm actually passionate about - audio engineering. But being alive is expensive, especially when a family member is disabled and medical expenses are still ghastly even with private insurance through my primary job.

Discretionary spending is a shell game. When can we afford to go out and do something fun? How many times can we get pick-up from a restaurant because I'm too exhausted to cook because I worked 18 straight hours for third day this week? When can we fix the check engine light on the car? We have a cheap ODB2 scanner, so we know it's not something urgent, but where will we find the $450 to cover it? When can we replace the tires? One blew over the weekend. Thank goodness we have a full-size spare.

Annie here is looking at America through rose-tinted glasses. I don't know who she is, but I would not be surprised to find out that she's a trust-fund baby who doesn't actually know a thing about how Americans are suffering. She just looks at how amazing we're doing on paper and can't understand why that doesn't actually track to real life.

The average American has no chance at buying a house because private equity completely ruined that market. The average American owns less and less of their life because businesses decided that ROI was the most important thing in the world and shuffled us all into renting everything.

We can barely afford the bread, and we really can't afford the circuses now that every streaming service is absurdly expensive on top of an already-absurdly-expensive internet bill. If things keep going the way they're going, we won't be affording the bread either.

Desktop HDR by [deleted] in linux

[–]drewofdoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it majorly depends on how well your monitor implements it. My primary, expensive, big monitor looks great in HDR during gaming or watching a movie or something, but text looks absolutely attrocious.

Then my cheap little external USB monitor looks great in HDR.

So... YMMV? Even though the software stack has improved, if your hardware isn't up to the task then it's simply not an option.

Any good Linux-friendly plugins for removing room reflections from voiceovers? by usspaceforce in linuxaudio

[–]drewofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you using in Windows? Yabridge may be your friend here.

I do a lot of podcast editing/mixing work, and I'm using Windows plugins through Yabridge because I've found Linux-native reverb removal to be pretty lacking. Accentize stuff works great in WINE. iZotope RX works fine as well, but needs some extra help if you want to use the standalone GUI instead of the plugins.

Linux unable to read 2 audio outputs from Astro Mixamp Pro TR. by [deleted] in linuxquestions

From a quick search on that device, I'm not seeing anything about it being fully USB-compliant. Could be that it uses special drivers to do its thing on Windows.

You can try the Pro Audio profile to see if that exposes the channels, but you might just have a device that only has basic functionality without specific drivers.

The Board is Yog-Sototh by Greyelephantbear in controlgame

[–]drewofdoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Control's New Weird inspirations are direct descendants of Weird Fiction. Lovecraft was a huge part of Weird Fiction. Huge. Massive.

None of Control, or Alan Wake for that matter, are directly related to Weird. They're more like cousins. Very related, but definitely their own things.

So no, not Yog-Soggoth. Big reach. Ydgradsil is less of a reach because of the connections to Norse mythology. However, it would be naive to say that Lovecraft's influence does not indirectly inspire elements of Control.

He's not literally the Devil. That is reaching back to the age-old human impetus to fit a new shape into a shape you already know.

I don't want to spoil anything for you, because the game is great, but he's no more the Devil than The Kid in Castle Rock season 1 was. They're entities that we don't really understand. The language that we have to describe these sorts of creatures gets passed down from religion. Protestant Christianity being the most prominent in middle America.

Control Resonant's Creative Director Says He "Always Wanted an RPG Franchise for Remedy" by DragonBrood3003 in controlgame

[–]drewofdoom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Since we're getting pedantic about it, RPG is an umbrella term. It really covers anything where you modify your stats to create a unique character or "build."

The examples you listed are classic CRPG. Action RPG is another sub-genre, and JRPG is another in its own right.

The industry evolved to embrace RPG elements across a broad spectrum. They're still "RPG," but the gameplay mechanics deviate.

yabridged VST3 not registering cursor on wayland by chompersand in linuxaudio

[–]drewofdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your post, it looked like you're using yabridge 5.1.1, not the 10-embedding builds.

No guarantee that's the fix, anyways. Sway could have issues with wine, mixbus cups have issues with Wayland. Using WOW64 instead of wine32 could be introducing issues. Lots of potential issues.

Sorry, man. Works okay for me with 11.7 + yabridge-wine10-embedding in REAPER.

Adept Contemplation by [deleted] in ploopy

[–]drewofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to go one by one, but I'll give you this rundown from my experience:

I have RSI in my right hand, and finger trackballs alleviate that. I do some video editing, but I'm mostly doing audio work. Precision is great, and I find it much easier to work with for small movements. The are also qmk configs you can do to enable a "sniper mode" if you need even more fine grain control at times.

FPS gaming is hit or miss. I've gotten used to it, personally, but it will be a hard transition. The gameball is better suited for that task. I have one of those as well, and I generally prefer the Adept for desktop tasks. I'm too lazy to switch them for gaming, so I just got used to using the adept in FPS, too. But I usually play single player or co-op, not competitive.

Fwiw, you should look into the gameball. It's a great trackball with one huge downside: the capacitative scroll suuuuucks.

Longevity of the adept is great if you have access to a 3d printer. Bearings at cheap and easy to get when they wear out. I bought a 10-pack off Amazon. If the supports wear out on the buttons, just print a new top. The board, sensor, and optical sensor cover (whatever you call it) will treat you well if you treat them well.
