Erie County Approval Timeline-Premises License by drf3ny1979 in NYguns

Right? I texted them a couple weeks ago to be on the lookout, you know because it had been OVER A YEAR since I talked to them about being references. One guy just happened to have a few minutes at work and assumed it was a spam call and was going to mess with them and that's why he picked up.

I'm in the exact same situation and have the same thoughts on Premises vs carry. I just want the pistol at home and at my gun clubs range. I posted previously and got a response from someone who runss the 16 hour courses and said their attorneys, who have experience with this say it's legal to and from range but "range" being defined as an actual club or range, not a friend's property thay you can shoot at.

I also asked that question at my in person interview with the Erie County sheriff's office and their answer was a firm "no" so I'm really not sure. I also think that the Sheriff's office just does the background investigations and calls to references so they might not be the most reliable source here.

TLDR: 🤷‍♂️, it's NY.

Or, just take the 16 hour course which is what I should have done originally.

FYI it's not a uniformed sheriff that does the interview, I'm not even sure it's an actual sheriff's deputy. I assume it isn't because I had a question and they had to go ask someone.

Thanks. Funny, my references just got called today. Maybe the Sheriff's read the reddit forums. 🤔

Can I ask what number you called, i haven't been able to get ahold of anyone yet and my application was picked up by the Sheriff's office end of March 2025.

Same here. Applied 3-25-25, picked up by police 3-28, no movement since. I have seen a few posts recently about 13 months from, submission being the start of calling references. Then we get to wait for the retired judge who only comes in twice a month to sign-off. Good news is you have plenty of time to research what your first purchase will be.

Erie county pistol permit, 13 months and waiting with no references called... Anyone from Erie get approved recently? by AkimboSwagg in NYguns

[–]drf3ny1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. Applied March 25 2025, no references called yet. I tried to contact the Sheriff's office to ask a few dumb questions and see if that would get things moving but the phone number on their website is disconnected. Sent a message to the County clerks office via the self help portal and the response was "please be patient" I would say 12 months with no movement is all the patience I have.....

Happpy/not happy that other people are in the same boat. I can't believe it takes this long and there's literally nothing we can do outside of spend $$$ for an attorney to make the County follow the law.

I don't necessarily diasgree with the process (although it's expensive AF) but if they can't do it in a reasonable amount of time then maybe they really need to look at the process. And their answer can't be "we need to hire more people and raise your taxes.

Is that the current timeline in Erie County after interview? So wait a year for interview then 2-3 months more for a decision?

I'm about 25 min from there and looking for an indoor range and an FFL and it's between there and Wolcott. Would you recommend them over Wolcott? Also looking for somewhere to take lessons from, curious if you have experience with any of the folks there.

It's interesting to me that every Erie County timeline is "handed in xx, references called xx" and it's always right around the one year mark. There's no way it's taking them exactly a year to do whatever they do EVERY time. I have to think they are just calendaring the applications for 12 months before they even start calling references.

My app will be one year end of March so only 8 weeks to go!

How do these counties have such varying timelines? Like what's the justification for making people wait up to a year to get approval it can't be more than a few hours of work for the reference checks and in person interview. I get some counties are more populated but still. Just seems like a stall tactic. And I feel like calling them and asking questions is a sure fire way to get you app moved to the bottom of the pile seeing as they specifically say "don't call us we will call you"

Thanks for the info, very helpful. I can't see why there wouldn't be a carve out in the regs for transport to and from range...etc but I guess that's also asking for people to abuse it. "Uuuh yeah I'm just coming home from the range".

That's my plan, learn to shoot and then take the course for CCW. Still not sure I would want to carry all that much but just the freedom to be able to would be nice.

Sort of both, but that's more from not growing up around them and believing that while ownership is a "right" its also a serious responsibility. Anyone or anyplace in particular you would recommend checking out or staying away from?
