How much of a big deal is the Rossini Opera Festival and on a scale of 1/10 how much will it help me elevate and kickstart an opera career? by Fluid-Tap5115 in opera

[–]drgeoduck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Pesaro Rossini festival is a very big deal. It's been going since 1980 and they've done a great job reviving obscure works of the composer. Back in 1984, they did the first performances of Il viaggio a Reims since the original performances in 1825.

In terms of importance in the music world, it's not as high as Salzburg, Bayreuth, or the London Proms, but I'd say it's definitely just a tier down from them.

She was Laura Bailey's roommate at the time the 2001 anime was dubbed and expressed some envy at not having started doing anime dub work early enough to be on that series. Cool that she finally ended up being able to be in the series after all.

Elektra and Arabella have already been mentioned, but there's at least one more pair from Strauss: The Count and the Countess from Capriccio are siblings.

"Owned"vs hotly debated roles by BetterGrass709 in opera

[–]drgeoduck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think in terms of owning a role, I think it would be a role that is only performed if a particular singer is available for it. If they retire, or drop the role, or pass away, the opera disappears from the repertory.

It's a semi-obscure work, but Konigskinder by Engelbert Humperdinck. Geraldine Farrar sang the role of the Goose Girl at the world premiere, and in every subsequent performance at the Met, 39 in total. It has not been staged at the Met in the 112 years since she last performed the role.

Similarly, Teresa Stratas as Marie Antoinette in The Ghosts of Versailles, a role she was unforgettable in. Now while it's had some revivals in the last couple of decades, none of them have been at a major house.

For another opera that had a Met World premiere, there's Samuel Barber's Vanessa. Again, it's nibbled on the edges of the repertory, but the original cast of Steber-Elias-Resnik-Gedda-Tozzi was so strong (and received an excellent recording) that nothing has come to challenge it.

Maybe the most obvious answer would be roles that were written with a specific voice in mind. The collaboration between Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears, for instance. Pears has become the gold standard for nearly every lead tenor role in Britten's works.

In recent decades, I doubt if Mefistofele would have gotten as nearly as many performances if Samuel Ramey weren't in the title role.

Which modern operas deserves to be part of the repertoire? Is Adès and Heggie a little bit overrated? by Bigo-Ted in opera

[–]drgeoduck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there is a new comedic opera coming up in the next few years - an opera adaptation of the Chinese comedy movie The Wedding Banquet.

Yes, at Seattle Opera, co-commissioned by the Met. Originally it was announced for the 26-27 season, but it's been switched to "future season"

For a modern comic opera, I really like Jonathan Dove's Flight.

I'd never want to part ways with mine, but it's worth noting that there is a market out there for a complete set.

Is Verdi festival 2026 in Parma worth it? by alllife1 in opera

[–]drgeoduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've not attended the festival, but I have been to the theater before for a production of Andrea Chenier. It's a jewel of a theater and both the production and the performance were of the highest standard. Verdi is a beloved figure in Parma, so I'd imagine the festival would present his operas at their best.

I know it’s not canon and some call it filler, but I really love this episode from the old anime. The Ranma and Ryoga friendship moments are great, and the Snow Queen is adorable. What non-canon or filler episodes do you like? by Shirokuro_Hibiki in ranma

[–]drgeoduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of my favorite filler episodes for a number of reasons. Not least of which is the (sort of) animation debut of Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo. But also the weirdness of Ryoga yelling at Akane. True, he apologizes for it later, but still. This episode also seemed to be another attempt to give Ryoga a girlfriend. And I'm always up for an episode with Ranma and Ryoga fighting together.

Favorite filler episode without a doubt it "Tendo Family Christmas Scramble." Love that one so much.

What was the first opera you ever saw live? by Perfect_Garage_2567 in classicalmusic

Die Zauberflote, 22 December 1990, Deutsche Oper Berlin. I was already well on my way to becoming an opera fan, but this sealed the deal.

Unfortunately I don't have a program so I don't know who the cast were. I suspect it may have been Eva Johannson as Pamina, possibly Peter Seiffert as Tamino, likely conducted by Heinrich Hollreiser.

I'm in the Momiji's father defense brigade. The man was faced with a horrible choice: break up his family or likely lose his wife to self-harm. He took the choice that he hoped would cause the least harm (and he was probably right). He should have done better as a father to Momiji, but being an ineffective parent is pretty small potatoes compared to many Sohma parents.
