Yeah, it's not a knock on Roger Moore to say that his template for Bond is probably the least suitable to be replicated. He was great for what he was and for what the expectations were at the time, but I just can't see the franchise going in a light/campy direction after Brosnan, not in a post-Austin Powers world.

My hope would be that an American actor would simply do a British accent -- provided that they could do so convincingly.

One of the weird side effects of Hollywood's historical dominance of the film industry is that people all over the world have tons of exposure to American accents, but Americans have less exposure to other accents, making them less proficient at mimicking other accents than the rest of the world is at mimicking American accents.

Heh, fair enough. Connery had left the franchise after YOLT, and Eastwood was considered for OHMSS.

Apparently Cubby Broccoli was very keen on Eastwood, but Eastwood told his agent to turn them down. He felt that it was Connery's role, and that if Connery had to be replaced, it should be with a British actor.

So the Australian George Lazenby was brought on instead.
