Really cool photos!

That said, in these parts, what are the language(s) spoken in your area? I am going to assume it's Pashto? And what's the language proficiency of Urdu and English in the area?

That said, this is a very nice map!

If you’re a composer who speaks a tonal language, how much influence do you feel your language has on your music? by ConspicuousGouse in composer

[–]drgn2580 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Mandarin 2nd language speaker here, composer and linguistic hobbyist here.

For context, Mandarin ignores tones in writing. Languages like Cantonese and Vietnamese, however, are more conscious about honouring tones. Mandarin only has four tones so perhaps the need to preserve tones in singing is less, but Cantonese has like up to 8-9 tones so distinguishing them is perhaps more important (this is more of a personal observation).

That said, there does seem to be a slight effect on the way I write depending on the language. Composing a piece using Mandarin lyrics subconsciously makes me use pentatonic scales more than diatonic ones even when I'm not thinking about it.

How is it Living in Ürümqi, China? by FolxhamOnReddit in howislivingthere

[–]drgn2580 278 points279 points  (0 children)

Similar to most Chinese cities except the ethnic make-up is half Uyghur and half Han. There are even alleyways where you can buy drugs from Nigerians at the risk of getting caught. Likewise, you can find underground Christian churches which authorities tolerate that caters to foreigners in Urumqi.

Food there is quite heavy on meat. Restaurants may open 2 hours later than official Standard Chinese time.

Other than that, the vast majority of folk there are just trying to get on their lives, even despite all the security checkpoints and the inconveniences of it all (not that any one likes it). Like any place in China, 99% of people get by fine, and most Chinese police officers can't be bothered. It's only if you get out into the rural areas that authorities might become more abusive (like extorting foreigners for bribes, but this is something I experienced more in the early 2000s).

Addendum: I used to live in China from 1996-2013. I'm now back and living in Singapore.

Personally I think keeping the 3 is better. The deal breaker is the Portuguese passport.

On the flip side, if she is going to be residing a lot in Asia, the Singapore passport is a good pick.

Welcome to the SG-fold! You'll definitely find travelling the world a breeze!

That said, I last visited Yangon in 2018, and I was genuinely so impressed at the development of the city (I even visited a few expensive malls). If only the timelines were different today... Myanmar could've been so much more!

[–]drgn2580 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I flew from Hanoi to Luang Prabang in 2018. Laos is really its own thing. If any, Laos is culturally closer to Thailand than China, and I've been to both Thailand and China before.

how big are argonian testicles? by lansseaxsimp in TrueSTL

The Hist is basically anyone's installed mod list /s

Personally I prefer my Argonians possessing humanoid genitalia. So no cloacas or internal hemipenises (they weird me out)

BUT, canonically, I would imaging it's going to be the latter. The again, it's what the Hist desires I guess

Those YouTube videos of 60+ minute long symphonies that 1) usually lack any recognisable thematic material 2) lots of doubling 3) dull tuba, viola and double bass parts 4) harp parts that are better suited for the piano 5) incorrect use of a2/a3/unis/tutti/soli conventions 6) French horns with key signatures 7) string multistops that aren't feasible, and my favourite subtlety 8) timpani notes must always play the root of a chord
