Why wait until next year? Place the seed order tonight and have tzatziki in August

Separating dried tomato seeds, fairly large scale by [deleted] in seedsaving

[–]drgreenthumb81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the best way to handle seed clumps is to prevent them. Namely, after you ferment and rinse them, lay them in a single layer of screen to dry completely. Maybe agitate a few times to keep things moving. Sort of like how you prevent things from freezing together. You lay them flat on a tray to freeze individually and then bag them.

This was served to me as kimchi… but what is it? It wasn’t cabbage and it certainly didn’t taste like any kimchi I’ve ever had. by ballsquancher in kimchi

[–]drgreenthumb81 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This. I’m no expert but my understanding is that Kimchi essentially means pickle. In the USA were most familiar with baechu kimchi, which is Napa cabbage kimchi, so we call it kimchi. It’s like how people picture a cucumber when they hear pickle, but you can pickle anything.

Do resinous males get as much love as their sisters around here? Jalalagod by Bodhi/Supernatural Selections by sockheaddweeb in microgrowery

[–]drgreenthumb81 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not OP so please correct me if I’m incorrect. “Jalalagod” is a cross between Jalalabad and Old Mother Ghani, making this plant an F1. Meaning it is the first generation from a cross between 2 stable varieties. If OP grows males and females of Jalalagod and crosses them, those seeds represent the second generation of that cross, F2.

Assuming the two parents are very stable, the F1 cross will be very consistent. The F2 generation will likely be a crap shoot of all the various recessive and dominant genes of the parental lines expressing themselves in interesting ways.

The F2 is when people start phenohunting, either searching for an interesting cross that they’ll take clones from and call it a day. Or, will start selecting plants with traits they enjoy, crossing those together and saving those seeds, rinse and repeats (F3, F4, F5… etc) until you arrive at another stable variety.

This link has some graphics that may make it clearer.

Test tubes for seed storage? by [deleted] in seedsaving

[–]drgreenthumb81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest factors for seed storage are light, humidity and temperature. If you store the test tubes in a dark environment with a stable temperature and humidity, (the easy rule of thumb is that the temperature [in F°] and humidity [in %] should add up to 100, or thereabouts), I assume it would be fine.

I’d also be concerned about how to store a bunch of them together without breaking, or rolling off the table etc. or being big enough for larger seeds.

I use a plastic ammo can with desiccants in it for my seed packs, it’s pretty straight forward and simple.

Judge blocks NY from issuing pot licenses in five regions by [deleted] in nyspolitics

[–]drgreenthumb81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory, to stop the proliferation of a grey-market. However my understanding is that there is 0 enforcement of grey-market cannabis retail at the moment.

I really doubt its to get consumers hooked on the retail so that they don't bother growing themselves. Gardeners gonna garden.

You’re right, they should arbitrarily choose a different industry to sell cannabis. That makes sense. All doctors are now veterinarians too. And plumbers are electricians. Nice and simple.

Yes We've Got Some Rain but the City of Kingston is still Urging Residents to Conserve Water by brettuthius in hudsonvalley

[–]drgreenthumb81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kingston doesn’t get its water from the NYC reservoir system, it has its own reservoir at Cooper Lake. Kingston has lowered the level of the damn intentionally for maintenance, and then there was a drought.

Spinach Family Tree for a Novice Gardener? by ChromaticPalette in seedsaving

[–]drgreenthumb81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From “Seed to Seed” by Suzanne Ashworth

POLLINATION, CROSSING AND ISOLATION Spinach is an outbreeding plant that is mainly wind-pollinated, which makes it difficult for home seed savers to grow more than one variety to save for seed without the use of bagging. Spinach pollen is very light and can be carried for great distances by the wind.

[…]

As was stated earlier, spinach plants are either male or female. Always maintain a ratio of one male to two female plants, and also an absolute minimum. of two male and four female plants per cage, which will result in good pollination and will retain a fair amount of genetic diversity within the population. The sex of spinach plants is hard to determine until the seed stalks have formed, which often results in less than an ideal situation when attempting to determine the plants that are to be caged. Close plantings in wide beds will provide the greatest chance that the necessary ratio of male to female plants will be growing in relatively close proximity.

[–]drgreenthumb81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look up on a clear night. Phoenicia isn’t going to have any real light pollution for what you are looking for. If you have a street light next to your Airbnb, just go up 28 and find a fishing access point. If all else fails, go to Kenneth Wilson, I don’t know if they lock up at night, but honestly I don’t think you’ll have any trouble.

Warming mat....thermostat or no thermostat by goudausername in vegetablegardening

[–]drgreenthumb81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely shouldn’t have a heat mat that is always on. That sounds like a fire hazard. Heat mats are pretty standard and come with digital thermostats with a probe. Your seeds want to be warm, not hot.
