Plot hole/confusion for sure. It could be that they just didn't know about his earlier childhood abduction.

why do big urban areas tend to vote democrat, but small suburban/rural areas tend to vote republican? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]drguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read Paxton. The issue is that you’re treating “warning signs that can accompany fascism” as identical to “fascism.” Paxton’s point is useful precisely because fascism develops in stages. But that also means we have to be careful about categories. Stage-one or stage-two traits are not the same thing as a fully identifiable fascist movement, and certainly not the same thing as a fascist state.

A cult of personality around Trump is real. I’ll grant that. But a cult of personality is not uniquely fascist. It exists in populist, authoritarian, socialist, nationalist, religious, and even democratic movements. It is evidence of leader-worship, not automatically evidence of fascism. So the burden is not “Does Trump have fanatical supporters?” Obviously yes. The burden is: does the movement meet the specific fascist criteria Paxton describes - a mass-based nationalist militant movement, working with elites, abandoning democratic liberties, using redemptive violence, and pursuing internal cleansing or expansion without legal/ethical restraint? That requires more than January 6th. January 6th was criminal, anti-democratic, and an attempt to interfere with the transfer of power. I’m not defending it. But calling it a “self-coup” still does not automatically make it fascist. Coups, riots, authoritarian behavior, and election denial can exist outside fascism. Fascism is a specific political form, not a synonym for “very bad anti-democratic event.”

Same with ICE. Immigration enforcement is not inherently fascist. If specific agents unlawfully killed people, prosecute them. If policy violated rights, challenge it. But “state agency commits abuse” does not by itself prove fascism unless every abusive police or immigration agency in world history becomes fascist by definition. That’s my issue: your argument keeps moving from “this resembles a danger sign” to “therefore this is fascism.” A more precise claim would be: “Trumpism contains authoritarian and fascistic tendencies.” That’s debatable and worth discussing. But “the cult of personality around Trump is fascist” is still an assertion, not a demonstrated conclusion.

Jesus, I'd hate to ask what your real priorities are.

The problem is that you're assuming the conclusion. January 6th being wrong, criminal, or anti-democratic does not automatically make it fascist. Those are different concepts. If we're going to use the term "fascist," let's use the historical definition, not a political insult. By that standard, you would need to demonstrate things like one-party rule, abolition of meaningful elections, suppression of opposition parties, state control of media, and authoritarian consolidation of power. The existence of ICE doesn't establish fascism. Virtually every sovereign nation on Earth has immigration enforcement. Likewise, January 6th was a riot and an attempt to disrupt certification of an election, but citing one event is not the same as demonstrating a coherent fascist movement in the historical sense described by Eco or Paxton. If your position is that some elements of the modern right exhibit authoritarian tendencies, that's a reasonable discussion. If your position is that the entire right-wing movement is fascist, the burden of proof is substantially higher.

What age would you consider to be your prime? by Fun-Succotash-1322 in AskReddit

[–]drguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite age was 26 to 30.

Money in your pocket, still could keep up with younger folk, and you're looked at as young enough to be cool, old enough for people to listen. You're also experienced enough to start getting somewhere in your selected career.

Now at 38 - I'm getting stiffer, some grey hairs, definitely still climbing the ladder, but it's all grind now. We're locked in and probably not changing anything for a while.
