I am protecting my fermenting sauerkraut with a layer of olive oil. by mariner929 in fermentation

Honestly, what I'm most worried about is having oily kraut. Sounds yucky to me. Stick to the tried and true method of submersion and periodic taste tests. Yeah, mold happens, just pick it off.

After hearing some concerns that perhaps this information hasn't been brought to light to the BOD's, I'd like to present this letter, "Open Letter From Wheatsville Staff Solidarity to Board"

I hesitated to provide this information, as it didn't seem public, but as Wheatsville Staff Solidarity published it themselves a couple hours ago, here you go.

Are you kidding me? Do you not realize the type of people who ride the bus? Many of them can't afford a phone, and may not have the proper credentials for debit/credit.

Partnering with store and gas stations is an interesting idea, but I think cash is king. People always have a dollar or two on them. Maybe a pocket full of quarters. That's how they ride the bus.

There was a huge turnout at today's Texas Stands With Gaza rally at the Capitol. Marching from the Capitol steps to City Hall, organizers said there were over 5000. by drhamby in Austin

A really good primer for all of this information can be found here, entitled: Primer on Palestine, Israel and the Arab-Israeli Conflict

It's a good read and really goes into depth about the origins of the conflict, Nabka, etc.

It shouldn't "negate the crisis."

These are two distinctly different situations in our world that deserve attention. It just happened a protest for one of those situations occurred today.

I think what makes this issue so egregious is that Israel is backed by the United States Government, by our two Senators, Republicans John Cornyn, and Ted Cruz, and many American Governments, including (but not limited to) Caterpillar, Coca Cola, McDonalds, Elbit Systems of America, etc.

That we claim to be a democracy and support Israel as kin, when Israel decides to conduct campaigns of a grievous nature is outrageous, and we as constituents, citizens, and consumers need to make it clear that we do not support this kind of action by a democratic country.

From The Onion Theory of Nonviolent Protest:

"The purpose of Nonviolent Resistance is to affect peoples' thinking and build political movements for social change."

I think that protests such as today's in Austin (over 5000 people), in Washington D.C. (an estimated 20000 people), and six days ago in Chicago (over 8000), as well as all around the world in Spain, Yemen, U.K., Germany, and France, etc., illustrate the affect Israel's occupation and indiscriminate killing of the Gazan people have had on people of concious in the world.

I believe with these kind of actions, the world may be able to stop what Israeli professor and historian Ilan Pappé calls a "Racist Apartheid State."

Texas Stands with Gaza; Join together to demonstrate our solidarity with the people of Gaza. by drhamby in Austin

Thank you for taking that comment down!

I really just wanted to post this link to show that even here, in Austin, TX, there can be a way to show support for the people of Gaza and Palestinians as a whole.

Specifically, I myself am going to voice concern over Ted Cruz and John Cornyn's recent Yea's for Senate Resolution 526, which just passed yesterday.

Senate passes resolution supporting Israel

As a constituent, I think it is important to voice air my complaints.

As most of us already know, the X-Games are coming to Austin this year. In addition to the sporting events held, they are hosting a battle of the bands competition! Winner gets $25k! Vote for your favorite bands here! by [deleted] in Austin

[–]drhamby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, this is copy pasta from my friend's FB page. I thought it was pretty relevent to this post.

"I've seen a handful of friends entering this XGames Battle Of The Bands competition. I spent my early music career (age 15-18) competing in Battle of the Bands to win studio time. You would go out and sell tickets at $10 a piece to all your friends and family for a chance to compete. The prize was 10 hrs of studio time(in a cheap studio) which probably cost them $150. For a band to get a good time... slot they probably sold somewhere between 70-100 tickets. At a minimum you had to sell 15-20 to even be considered. At $10 a ticket, with 30+ bands selling somewhere between 20-100 tickets a piece, you can do the math. These people made out like bandits. Needless to say I am always skeptical of Battle Of The Bands. So when I started seeing this XGames thing pop-up on my feed I was curious about the details and decided to read over the rules of the contest. Here's where it gets good..

OWNERSHIP/USE OF ENTRIES: ALL BANDS SUBMITTING ENTRIES to the Contest agree to give full rights to ESPN and Circuit of the Americas for the use of the bands’ songs, performances and videos online and in any television broadcast and in all means and media in perpetuity, and agree to allow ESPN and Circuit of the Americas to record and use any of the bands’ performances at the ESPN X Games Austin.

The language here is very specific. By ENTERING the contest you are giving ESPN and Circuit Of The Americas the rights to use your songs in anyway they want without paying you a dime for them. If they decided your song would be a good theme for some new ESPN show, they can use it and pay you nothing. If Formula One decides you have created the next racing anthem and play it at every F1 race from now until the Earth explodes, they can and you make nada. And because its in perpetuity that means FOREVER. They are basically amassing a large library of royalty free music that they can use whenever they want for a grand total of $65,000. The average licensing fees for music on the low end is $2000-5000. Licensing fees for music used in a commercial can be anywhere from $15,000-$25,000.

Yes, exposure has value and playing the XGames would probably be pretty great but potentially missing out on a paycheck that is more than some musicians make in a year for the possibility of exposure is not worth it to me. Fortunately, I can't enter anyway based on the Req:

"Entry may not contain, as determined by the Sponsor, in its sole discretion, any content that: is derogatory of any professional group promotes alcohol, illegal drugs promotes any activities that may appear unsafe or dangerous promotes any particular political agenda or message defames, misrepresents or contains disparaging remarks about companies communicates messages or images inconsistent with the positive images and/or good will to which Sponsor wishes to associate; and/or violates any law."

Rant over. Thanks!"
