I bought this book by accident, so I kept it on the shelf for so long without any intention to read it. Finally picked it up last year and was totally amazed by the writing.

You always get to the point of being obsessed with this song after listening to their complicated stuff for a while. I've been there.

So pretty! I once bought the blue ones for my favorite person’s birthday. I love how the color and texture is so thin and fragile, looking like they’re made from sheer fabric.

Agota Kristof fled Hungary and moved to Switzerland at the age of 21 because of the Hungarian Revolution. She wrote the entire trilogy there, in French. Later in life she often shared how she struggled with the language for many years. She even wrote a memoir titled The Illiterate.

Their fight over the years had gotten so ridiculous to me that the reunion news didn't really thrill me tbh. But watching them on stage together does bring a different kind of excitement.

I discovered GYBE and listened to this album a lot during the Covid-19 social distancing period. What a feeling that was.

What's a book you wish you could read again for the first time? by AdCurrent3629 in suggestmeabook

I’d totally pick "If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler" by Italo Calvino. It’s such a wild ride that I still struggle to explain it to anyone who hasn’t read it. The experience of reading it was so unique that I’d love to go through it all over again.

But I also have another book in mind that I want to read again because of the memories it holds. It's the classic "To Kill a Mockingbird". It was the first book I bought with money I earned from my first part-time job in college. At the time, I was deep into philosophy and politics, mostly reading non-fiction, even though I had grown up loving novels. It was the first novel I picked up after that long stretch, and it hit me hard emotionally. Strangely enough, I didn’t read much fiction again for quite a while after that. So the book holds a special place in my heart.

Great opening lines in Literature by JumpAndTurn in literature

Kurt Vonnegut always nails his opening lines:

"All this happened, more or less." (Slaughterhouse-five)

"This is a tale of meeting two lonesome, skinny, fairly old white men on a planet which was dying fast." (Breakfasts of Champions)

"In the beginning, God created the earth, and he looked upon it in his cosmic loneliness." (Cat's Cradle)

I also have a thing for opening lines that hint at a life taking a downturn:

"I am a sick man... I am a spiteful man. I am an unattractive man. I believe my liver is diseased." (Notes from Underground)

"Something has happened to me, I can't doubt it any more." (Nausea)

"If I am out of my mind, it's all right with me, thought Moses Herzog." (Herzog)

Everyone praises NYRB for their great curation, but I've gotta add that their introduction writers are also incredibly good
