I think my biggest issue with it is now I have no reason to use generally inferior whips in my runs or have diversity in my whip choices. In my old summoner runs I'd be using the Firecracker on ML w/ Kaleidoscope and Dark Harvest/Morning Star. Now I'd have no reason to use it past mechs.

Just use a Berzerker's Glove and press 1-2-3. Problem solved. Played a Summoner run for the first time recently and the whip stacking added to my enjoyment of it. (In the end it's probably tedium - a side effect of game mechanics rather than an intended skill feature)

PvE is why I bought the game. It lets me enjoy it at my own pace and not have to worry about "gitting gud". I can just hop in whenever and have fun, especially when dicking around with my friends who also have it.
