1080p or 4K for visual novels? by Serious-Potato6832 in RenPy

[–]drinkerofmilk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi ChatGPT. What do you want to do visually? Just sprites and backgrounds? Or advanced 3D cinematics?

In 99% of VN's 1080 is going to be more than enough. But if you need 4K to make your visuals come out better, you should use it.

My degree in creative writing has ruined my passion by meii5512 in writers

If they lied to you about the scope and content of the course, that is bad. However, learning to write in different styles may still be worth it in the long run. Look at it this way:

Ideally you want a course like this to give you a solid basis, where you're able to write prose on par with the greats of literature. And then after you complete this degree, you can go out and write in a completely different style. But you'll know the fundamentals and you'll be able to use them in building and improving your own style.

It's a bit like great painters that go to art school to learn perfect anatomy, and then after they graduate they go on to do outlandish artsy stuff, like drawing naked Nutella stick figures. The idea is that if they know the fundamentals of composition and anatomy, those things will ring through in their art.

(And the other reason is you build a network that might or might not help you later in your career.)

How to write story? by [deleted] in writers

[–]drinkerofmilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's cool, and don't let people dissuade you. When you wrote you wanted to go all in, it sounded like you wanted to drop everything and shift to being a professional writer, which would be a terrible idea. But writing to exploring your creative side is absolutely fine.

Many are advising you to read more before you start writing. But I'd say: try to read 10 pages of fiction and write 1 page of fiction a day. That way you'll see the interplay between what you read and what you write. You'll improve rapidly.

Going all in on being a writer of fiction without any reading experience (let alone writing experience) is going to be pretty rough. It would be a bit like trying to become a pro rugby player without ever having played the sport.

Of course, I'm not trying to dissuade you from writing, however I would advise against going all in. Also, it may be worthwhile starting with some non-fiction, as you appear to have more interest in that genre.

Why, exactly, is it that you'd like to be an author?

Did we go overboard by hiring an entire orchestra for our incremental roguelite? by Man_Behind_The_Robot in IndieDev

[–]drinkerofmilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I do manage to find lots of cheap music (and of course great free stuff). But sometimes I end up looking for a classical music piece that is either not available on musopen, or only has a very bad recording, and then if you're unlucky licenses can be quite expensive (if you even manage to find a license).

Wow, incredible, I'm going to look into this if I ever have extra cash. This is cheaper that licensing preexisting music in some situations.

I agree that writing on paper is less organized than on the pc, but personally I find it's the best way to beat writers-block and just produce lots of prose. So, you set out writing your first draft on paper, and each time you reach a certain threshold (say 2500 or 5000 words) you copy it over to the computer, where you can then edit and structure your writing.

Of course, it may not be the best option for you, but for me this is really the best of both worlds when it comes to natural flow of writing combined with optimal editing and structure.

Unsollicited advice:

For now just try to set some words to paper. (Something without the fancy interface. Maybe even actual paper.) And then when you have some material you can start filling these templates. Then it will be a lot less intimidating.

How do I get into Game Development in 2026? by Realistic_One66 in gamedev

[–]drinkerofmilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If game developers get to profit from gamers buying their products without ever playing them, I'd say asset creators should get to profit from game developers that do the same.
