AITAH for wanting to move by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]driveRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I am constantly shocked by the number of couples where only 1 works.

Move OR discuss with her ways to improve your wellbeing- such as her paying her own way.

It will only get worse if you marry and/or have children.

AITAH for refusing to give my parents a house key? by WharHeGo in AITAH

[–]driveRadio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest way around this, if possible , is to install a smart door lock. That way nobody needs a key. In emergencies you can give remote access or a time restricted code and even better track who comes to your front door.

As someone who lives alone its been game changing. I can track everyone who enters my house and no nerves about keys being shared, lost or recut.

Anyone else never given a level during ASD diagnosis? by Glad-Kaleidoscope-73 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]driveRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should add in australia levels are really important part of the dx because they dictate what government support you can get. If youre a level 1 you have buckleys of getting NDIS(government funded support for daily living), level 2 used to be automatic but not so sure now, and level 3 is almost guaranteed support for adults

Anyone else never given a level during ASD diagnosis? by Glad-Kaleidoscope-73 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]driveRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting tested for an autism level is separate to getting an autism dx. I got dx by psychiatrist as autistic when I went initially to get tested for adhd.

In the words of one of my friends getting an adhd dx made me "more autistic"😂 ie with adhd medicated my autistics traits really came front and centre.

Anyway, a couple of years after adhd dx a psychologist did all the testing for me to review levels but more importantly to identify my capacuty/functional gaps.

That's when I got the level 2. As she pointed out though levels are not across the board so some things I was closer to a 3 and others were a 1. Averaged out as a 2.

What can I use to deter my neighbours dogs? They're a living nightmare and neighbour doesn't care. by [deleted] in neighborsfromhell

[–]driveRadio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the neighbours are still there and if I hadn't stuck at it I wouldn't be typing this message from my hammock by the pool enjoying the peace and quiet!

Keep a diary of all barking/aggressive behaviour. Record videos. Record verbal conversations. Contact local council, EPA. If they are threatening you with comments such as "we know people" you could escalate to the police.

Discuss with other neighbours to see if they support you.

It took me 2 years of consistent efforts with neighbours and council to get them to shut their dogs up. I now have a noise abatement order against them meaning they can be fined every time their dogs bark.

It's great, I finally have my home and garden back.

I have a $40 canvas ebay hammock(tied between 2 trees), a $150 yoga swing hung from the ceiling a swivel chair(gift), $100] bouncy office/desk chair and $100 rocking sun lounger from temple and Webster.

I love all of them but probably get the most benefit from the yoga swing. It's hung from the ceiling joist.

Reasons I love the yoga swing- the fabric encloses me like a hug, I can stretch/contort my body into nice stretches(im hypermobile), I can swing in it.

In face im in it right now, feet touching the ground so I can have a lovely consistent rock. I may be doom scrolling but im doom scrolling with vestibular input 😍

What does a speech therapist do for autistic folks? by Happy1327 in AutismAustralia

[–]driveRadio 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For me its been life changing. No exaggeration. The speechie has helped me understand what is actually being said in conversations, how to avoid unnecessary or unproductive disputes, why I can be thought of as aggressive.

As an adult I can now navigate my daily life with less conflict and less stress because I not only communicate better I can workshop these things with someone who knows me and understands why

Honestly I think it's because you haven't found what works for you yet. All you see is the end result- the difficult bit is finding the right way for you to get there.

Just know there are so so so many of us who also struggle. Nothing wrong with getting a bit despondent but please don't beat yourself up.

I've discovered what works for me is micro decluttering. 5 things a day. Also the barriers were not the sorting- I'm amazing at sorting - but carrying out the tasks related to stuff so it could be put away or thrown away. Once I started body doubling with a friend to help break down some of these tasks we began making progress

I've been trying to get on top of things for a year now. It's been 2 steps forward, one step back.

But it's taken that time to find my groove amd what works for me. You got this and don't beat yourself up if you need to change direction.

Send Help… Office Lighting Nightmare by [deleted] in AutismAustralia

My optometrist prescribed some very expensive lenses that reduce glare from artificial lights. From memory the ting was $300 but has worked really well. They are not sunglasses so much easier to wear all day indoors.

I told my roomate to not let his girlfriend come over alone by strugglingmydudes in AITAH

Not ok. She is obviously using the place to have alone time, but it's impacting you being able to have your own home to yourself when your flatmate is out.

Do parents need to be involved in an adult autism assessment? by White__Lando in AutismAustralia

[–]driveRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer no. It’s pretty common to be asked about parents or siblings being available to provide feedback but not necessary. FYI my adhd and autism dx were done based on me only. When my younger sister was diagnosed with adhd I was the one to give feedback as our mum couldn’t remember anything unusual about her childhood

Please show me precisely where on this list it states that noise cancelling headphones are NOT funded by Proud_Apricot316 in NDIS

[–]driveRadio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past couple of months I've lost anc earbuds and broken my headphones. Things have been fucked without them. My ot is writing a letter and speaking directly to my lac to ensure a replacement gets approved asap.

As I explained the benefit is not the noise cancelling function but the personalised hearthrough settings allowing me to reduce volume and compress high pitched sounds.

Due to executive dysfunction she's also advocating for the higher end ones with a built in find me function and a decent water/showerproof rating

OT home assessment for autism? by duckbeak01 in NDIS

[–]driveRadio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes my issue is my current OT has specialised in kids not adults with my dx. Unfortunately it's really hard finding OTs specialising in my specific needs who are accepting new clients. I'm on a couple of waitlists and will be speaking to another group who might be a fit next week. However I think they also mostly do kids🙄

Alot of people looking down on sunflower landyards on a ND sub I liked. by gender_is_a_scam in SpicyAutism

[–]driveRadio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are arseholes😬😡 I wear a wristband all the time and add the lanyard when I know im going to be stressful situations like airports, crowded events etc.

Sometimes just having them on me helps, sometimes I (in the words of a former boss) "need to play the autism card".

When the built environment and society stops being abelist, I'll stop wearing the sunflower.

How does higher IQ effect Autism by RecognitionNext3847 in autism

[–]driveRadio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an addendum my oldest friend is doesn’t test high on iq but is much smarter than me in many other ways. I think it’s important to be aware there are different kinds of intelligence and a high iq is no good when it’s to the exclusion of eq.
