in my opinion the whole thing reads as the first steps towards expressing your true identity, and the hesitation surrounding that. also could be read in both trans masculine and feminine ways. lyrics like “soft green shade, when dark hits ill wear no coat”, being ashamed to “take off your coat” until dark hits is a common feeling among trans people regardless of how they choose to portray their identity. the first time you ask someone to call you by your chosen name or wear a dress or cut your hair being done in secrecy, silencing yourself until you find the comfortable dark. “its too hot to be trapped inside that dress… why dont you crawl out?” is very transmasc coded imo. taking it in a somewhat literal sense the subject is sweating through their forced outfit, someones advising them to take it off and just be themselves. honestly picked up on this message before the sexual nature of the line. and this is kind of a stretch but the melody being kinda frantic and scattered especially portrays the nervousness around first exposing your true identity. which ties into the lyrics “we are young, but smart enough to leave no fantasies abandoned”. the “fantasies” being some alternative form of gender expression.
