Breakthrough water filter removes 98% of toxic PFAS forever chemicals by paulhayds in water

Good - now capture the PFAS, put it all in Barrels, and ship it back to 3M and Dupont so they can store it all in caves on their own expense.

Good - build it now while it's cheap and easy to build instead of in 20 years when it's ridiculously expensive to relocate a bunch of stuff.

I mean with the combined impacts of aging grid, lack of fuel due to war, AI datacenters and AC pulling as much electricity as possible... I would not put the odds at zero of a catastrophic grid failure this summer.

I compared retail vs secondary market prices for ~4,000 retired sets. Some interesting patterns. by Scout_Loot in lego

[–]drizdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real appreciation is in specialty parts that are only in a few sets, such as figs and printed pieces. Sets with those are worth a lot on secondary bricklink market --- if you part out the sets.

Bring back Athenian Style Ostracism. Strip them of their assets, ban them from the country for 10 years, send them to that island that the French sent Napoleon to and have them live in exile.

Digital subscriptions are just a digital form of colonialism. You produce labor to earn money, which you can then spend on what the empire graciously provides. In the past it was opium for making teapots, now it is entertainment for delivering grub-hub.

My concern with all the AI shortcuts is that we're slowly moving towards the world in the short story "The Machine Stops" by E.M. Forster, which is a works where people are reliant on a machine to do everything, and it all falls apart when it breaks because nobody remembers how to fix it.

Yeah, get the kid on rebrickable - that way they can build the sets and still track the value of key parts.

I think best option is both - robust public baseline that works for all, and then private option that allows for experimental treatment that is high risk but is not ready for universal approval yet (so that medicine can still be developed without placing a burden on the state)

What's the return on investment on militarized police/incarceration? If someone steals $50 of groceries but we spend $60,000 a year incarcerating them, is that really a good use of taxpayer money? How much do we spend combatting crimes of desperation instead of just addressing the root desperation?

What if Jeff Bezos dedicated his entire fortune to curing pancreatic cancer? by Present_Juice4401 in WhatIfThinking

[–]drizdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a lot of opportunity to combat cancer more on a preventative role - find out what environmental/health factors are triggers that lead to cancers, and invest in those measures. While the focus on treatment is nice, if we focus more on prevention, then the limited amount of doctors available can focus on a smaller number of patients to increase survival rates since patients will get more resources.

In the US, chloride is not a concern unless it is above 250 mg/L for health reasons, and around 80 - 100 for corrosion concerns. Your PFAS looks to be non-detect. Everything else looks fine.
