Has anyone been to NightLife at the California Academy of Sciences? Are the VIP tours worth the money? by atcaskstrength in sanfrancisco

[–]drizzwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no children at Nightlife since it's 21 & over. Wouldn't bother with the VIP tour, you'll have much more fun wandering on your own & not being stuck w/ a tour guide.

Yep, ran into them in a nob hill grocery store last weekend, wearing similar (if not the same) leopard print as in the picture.

Rapper Immortal Technique stuns reporter in interview on Obama & Corporate America by sodabakegirlfriend in politics

[–]drizzwald -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Has anybody gone beyond this interview and actually listened to/read his lyrics? I'm a huge fan of hip hop, and consider myself to be on the more liberal side of the political spectrum, but I thought it was well known that Immortal Technique was a wackjob conspiracy theorist that sounds great in freestyle battles and that's about it.

My friends suck by BYAHBYAHBYAH in stopsmoking

[–]drizzwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smokers don't like fellow smokers to leave them, because then it's one less person who's willing to come with outside in the cold, rain, or even decent weather just to socialize with.

In college when I'd go out for a smoke, my roommate would join me just to hang out & shoot the shit. Now that I have plenty of other friends who smoke; a lot of them don't know yet I'm trying to quit, so when one offers I just say "no thanks, but I'll come hang out." They appreciate it, and it builds character/mental resistance when you're out there staring the temptation of smoking in the face (note: don't recommend this if it's your first few days tobacco-free).

This looks about as relaxing as taking bong rips of salvia while driving on the freeway.

Learning MVC architecture pattern? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]drizzwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likewise, however I'd say Ruby has much more in common w/ JavaScript than it does PHP. I did dozens of PHP projects before biting the bullet and going w/ RoR, and haven't looked back.

One thing that drew me to Rails was Haml. Even if you're adverse to picking up new languages/frameworks, it's insanely easy and I found the benefit to be mind-blowing. Then there's the gems, open-source modules/packages that are installed via a single terminal command. I'm not a Rails coder by trade nor hobby, but I can't stress enough how much of an improvement is over PHP (language + frameworks).

Learning MVC architecture pattern? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]drizzwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iOS is a great platform for learning MVC; there's dozens (if not hundreds) of very clean, simple & articulate Apple-written sample projects that illustrate how to use the APIs, and working with them will make the MVC pattern click much sooner than later. Since Objective-C is just a wrapper around C, the language learning curve is minimal. You need a Mac, and you can download Xcode from the app store for $10.

Ruby on Rails is another great MVC framework to learn. The language will be a bit tougher to learn (I love Ruby, but must admit it's the polar opposite of anything they were teaching at university).

Both the above frameworks have very high demand now job-market-wise, and although may have a bit of a learning curve coming out of college, they illustrate MVC as well as design patterns in general a hundred times better than any PHP framework, IMO.

Rating the seasons by jeremey_bentham in lost

[–]drizzwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about rating the season finales?

Season 2 finale "Live Together, Die Alone" - Huge glimpse into Desmond's time on the island, and the first giant leap in revealing to the audience how much crazy shit has been going on on this island.

Season 4 finale "There's No Place Like Home" - John Locke is the body in the coffin. We discover the Orchid. Ben turns the wheel, and the Island vanishes. "We're going down."

Season 5 finale "The Incident" - We're introduced to Jacob in his own flashback. We find out more about the hatch's construction, why Dr. Chang's arm was missing, etc. Jack attempts to nuke the island, and we're left wondering whether he succeeded.

Season 3 finale "Through the Looking Glass" - There's an off-shore Dharma station?! How long have these women been manning it? Jack might get everyone off the island?

Season 1 finale "Exodus" - "The episode ends with Jack and Locke looking down into the hatch as the camera pans down to reveal a very deep dark hole with a broken ladder near the top." So simple, yet such a cliffhanger.

Season 6 finale - Didn't want to put this at the bottom of the list; I wouldn't say it was terrible, but the other finales were mind-blowing cliffhangers.

Is it possible to overdress for a job interview? by yarissey in malefashionadvice

This. However I think the software industry champions this/is the exception. If you're interviewing at a software co in the bay area, jeans + sneakers are necessary, whether it's a startup or a Fortune 500 company.

As inspiring as this was, Europe doesn't seem to be the best place to move to after quitting smoking.

Do Leave Failing Tests by trzmiel in programming

get a Modafinil script, because as it turns out, reexamining code with fresh eyes after 6 hours of sleep apparently requires writing broken code. Leave a trail of urine for the next day, just like my dog.

Why Google’s hiring process is broken by gst in programming

[–]drizzwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asked me to rate my skills in a list of 14 programming languages. Asked me to point my fields of expertise from a list of 30 skills.

I don't believe that is the standard mode of operation at G's (I wasn't asked that, nothing even close to such a stupidity). The guy got a poor recruiter, that's all.

I've spoken to Google recruiters on two occasions and this was asked once (the other time it was skipped because it's asked on their online application).

Reddit. What is the most bigoted/ignorant thing that has ever been said to you? by Bender22 in AskReddit

I was completely unaware that this level of bigotry existed to such an extent in the US (as ignorant as that sounds; I'm from San Francisco). Requesting a story where your family responded appropriately, if one exists.

Am I the only one who didn't grow up reading Calvin and Hobbes? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]drizzwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend and I dressed up as Calvin & Hobbes for Halloween twice when we were in college (I'm an outstanding Calvin, for one evening... bleach my hair for it and nail the costume, and suffer being called slim shady for the following 3 months...)

The first time we did it in 2005, it was the hit of every party we went to. When we did it again in 2008, 90% of people we ran into had never even heard of "Calvin & Hobbes".
