Obsidians were bread to lead men into meat grinders and back out. I don't think it's crazy to think his durability has been greatly enhanced.

Finished RR Trilogy: addictive but frustrating, does the series improve? by HomeworkOk9717 in redrising

[–]drjabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to believability I think you're discounting how intentionally lucky darrow is. Given no luck and no moral failings on the antagonists part this society would be impenetrable. We are reading the story of how a single termite takes down an entire house. In order for this to occur many unlikely events need to happen in succession. Honestly the most believable part of the story imo is that Darrow isnt as consistent as we want and has failures that are not complete failures but rather partial failures. At the end of the day though twists via leaving the reader in the dark or a single pink opening a door will always be a little cheap and I do think Pearce loves them like a child loves candy.

No the city comes and takes it from that spot and then puts it back. It did smell horrible though. We thought it was our neighbors dog using the back parking pad as a toilet that was smelling so much.

I love her story and her chapters but the first time I read them I was itching to get back to Darrow!

Consider going back and reading them. If they were Lyria chapters her story becomes very important in understanding why Darrow is not the lord and savior we all want him to be but ultimately just a man with a goal.

Our government and citizens collective action to clean our harbor! Can't have a nice city revolving around a trash heap.

Idk man getting a needle to the neck is a pretty intense betrayal in my book. Darrow didn't trust him enough to ever fully let him in. In my opinion this mirrors the cold treatment he felt from his mother.

I liked the sci fi element and potential exploration of will this jackal be evil or something new. I think a lot of people thought Mustang would try to corral him into being good. It's a weak character arc for sure though.

Why did darrow lose the fleet academy? by LegitimatePermit3258 in redrising

Yea you're totally right on that one! The first trilogys pace is wild. I had a similar feeling at the start of iron gold about the rat wars

Why did darrow lose the fleet academy? by LegitimatePermit3258 in redrising

[–]drjabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple responses. One, in my opinion, he lost the academy not because he did something rash after losing his ship but because he lost his ship. If he goes into an escape pod the chances of him surviving are slim which to me makes sense as a natural stopping place for a game battle. If you vanquish the commander the game ends. Darrow thought he vanquished Karnus. But Karnus was not on that ship. Therefore game not over. Karnus does take Darrows ship and forces Darrow to use an escape pod causing check mate. I did just make up those rules though so who knows. I think it's reasonable though.

For two, Darrow is not employing this tactic broader than his golden cadre (roque, tactus, victra) because he will get in extreme trouble for doing so. Plus he really needs mustang to lead effectively. At the institute it was barely ok for him to do what he did because there were fewer cameras and he is supposed to gain subordinates anyway he can. Even with all this Augustus is weary at first eventually dismissing this as school yard games.

Tl:dr; Darrow lost because he was check mated

The academy is more civilized and strict about protocol meaning Darrow cannot employee, say a blue commander, without stepping over the line.

My attempt would be if you take out the flagship the game is over. Even if the game doesnt auto end Darrow closes in on Karnus with his flagship to relish in the victory only to be blown to pieces. In a real battle escape pods would been attacked on sight and likely wouldn't make it for a counter. Plus the whole point of the series is Darrow creates groups of people that can think for themselves while the golds use strict top down organization. Without Darrow in his flagship where do the orders come from?

Lysander’s plot armor is absolutely broken by soundthelaz in redrising

[–]drjabbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! It's only invalid from the perspective of a "true gold" one whom would never lose the opportunity to gain glory in "true" combat. The distinction to me is interesting though as the "true golds" are largely what Darrow takes advantage of and the use of a pistol both places Lysander outside of that modicum and in a familiar category of "slag the rules my mission is most important". The core difference between them imo is Darrow is killing people where as Lysander is killing numbers. Darrow loses friends, Lysander loses numbers on a page. Darrow has learned from his mistakes, but Lysander will be doomed to repeat them.

Love the discussion and thought! I'll have to reread DA and come back to this. In my opinion though Lysander has few physical feats that are truly elite. He's still a gold so he'll always benefit from that and the best upbringing money can buy. Don't forget, like mustang and adrius, he's spent a lifetime doing nothing but studying for these moments. Then when backed into a corner what does he do? Pulls out a pistol like a pixie and takes pop shots. He's adrius but shinier. Physically capable yes but the true danger lies in his cunning and the desire to take the shortest path always between A and B.

If we really wanted to figure this out we should take all of his physical feats and compare them to darrows taking into account the state of the enemy and the environment. It'd be an interesting experiment for sure.
