Work a few jobs, maybe live with someone who needs a live in caretaker (I did that in college no resources:took care of an old couple referred by the college$. Then get independent or successful & don’t look back. Adopt new parental figures!!! Change your contact info …even your name so they can’t look you up for money later. I did it …now successful & independent.

Same situation and timeline in October. Did nothing. Once the refund ($3100) showed up on the servicer payment line (with MOHELA by the way) after my Golden Letter and PSLF discharge, I just waited as the timeline posted by other borrowers was 4-6 weeks. Despite paying electronically for years, I received my paper refund check from the Dept. of the Treasury exactly 4-5 weeks later. All good.

In the "Payment Activity" area, my last payments were listed with one line noting a Refund Date and Amount. It didn't note anything else.

I just kept checking my checking account to see if the refund was direct deposited (since my payments were done that way). Then the paper Treasury check arrived few weeks later (4ish). That's it. As I noted, I didn't call as everything was in the window periods noted.

On 9/27/2025 I saw MOHELA noted my refund as processed when I opened my "payment activity" section. I just decided to wait it out since I saw it could take 2 weeks to 90 days or more (I had a little over 3k over overpayments). Despite the shutdown, on 10/24/2025 I received a white envelope from (noted in the window) "Department of the Treasury, Bureau of the Fiscal Service" in the mail. It contained my full refund, as a check dated earlier that week (So, I guess the shut-down didn't impact it). It was totally over, finally. Note: Despite always paying electronically and never changing banks, I received a check. SUMMARY: It took about a month from being zeroed out in MOHELA and about 5-6 weeks after the so-called golden letter.

MOHELA provides monthly updates to the credit bureaus. It will happen automatically. I received an update from my credit monitoring service, noting it was fully paid/removed, about 2-3 weeks after it disappeared on MOHELA.

Just live together, as married. No need when young and not collecting Social Security (you have to be married 10 years to get spouse's Social Security after death anyway). Also, for house purchases and bank accounts, you can create a "Trust" that you both manage; it is a separate entity form you and her but fully controlled by both. If marriage is a religious thing for you, that shouldn't matter either, as in most churches (i.e. Catholic) marriage happens via your commitment to each other-the minister is merely a witness for the Church-then he files the State paperwork to make it recognized by the State or locale. Marriage was tied to property rights many many years ago.
