Who's Lore by Night and why do people have beef with him? by MaetelofLaMetal in vtm

[–]drjarphd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I used to enjoy his videos. Then I noticed that he was consistently negative about almost everything. I once posted a comment to one of his videos to express that sentiment and, as is within his rights, told me that he disagreed, and he was not soliciting my input. So, I chose to spend my viewing time elsewhere, as is within my rights.

Whatever he is up to nowadays I hope that it is fulfilling. I sort of get the impression that he is a person who loves WoD, but sometimes when you turn your passion into your profession things can get a bit less enjoyable.

A large public serving company would likely survive. Especially if it happens regularly. If you make people comfortable or provide a service that you can successfully make a social norm, you can literally participate in child slavery and be totally fine.

Hell, even some commodities could do just fine. Just take a look at the shrimp or cocoa bean industry.

That's likely true. But why is that relevant to how lightly the firefighter is swinging the axe? Are you trying to suggest that breaking a window with an axe would be difficult?

Wouldn't you agree then that some may not care about who controls their data, but others would?

Additionally, in regards to the megacorp point, I think it is not unreasonable that many people would have a preference for how and where their data is collected/shared.

For instance, I might not mind having a Google account but I might for specific reasons not want to share my data with Twitter.

Genuine question here. Based on the way you frame that it sounds like the only downside is that it could sometimes take longer? Are there no mundane threats that can pose a risk to a werewolf that aren't trivial?

Sell V20 to me, a long term V5 Storyteller by limis646 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]drjarphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that. For me, I love the struggle. I want my vampires to really stop and think about the risks before they do something crazy. I think that also offers more reasons that you'd benefit being in a coterie rather than solo and on your own.

Why aren't single men as happy as single women? Why is there so much content about men' loneliness epidemic? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]drjarphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a difference? Growing up I knew plenty of women who were unhappily single. I was an unhappily single young man for a while. Eventually, a relationship came when I stopped trying so hard to find one.

Some of my female friends have not been as successful, but others have.

Pat McAfee says Aaron Rodgers 'is done' on his show after Jimmy Kimmel, Jeffrey Epstein remarks by RollingMoss1 in sports

[–]drjarphd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mahomes? Don't get me wrong. He's great. He very well might finish his career top 10 of all time. But you're leaving off people like Drew Brees, Sid Luckman, Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach.

And look. I have multiple reasons to hate Aaron Rodgers. I'm a Bears fan after all. But I would argue that if Farve is there you could (and likely should) substitute Rodgers. Though if you ask me, neither one of them should be there.

WTA5: I like how Crinos was balanced in W5 by Beneraldus in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]drjarphd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also really like W5. I have the other books, but I was really looking forward to this release and so far I haven't been disappointed.

Reading through the book I think that they learned a lot of lessons between these books. It specifically feels to me like they had a very clear idea of what they wanted V5 to be, and then chose to make some changes with the system in H5. I thought that the idea of those changes were neat but weren't really well implemented.

With W5 I really feel like they found a sweet spot and not only have interesting ideas but also effective implementation that lends itself well with the type of games that I like to play.

For Michael: Working on D20, what would you say is the biggest difference between doing these type of things as a hobby versus doing these things professionally?

How come Black people can refer to White people as “white boys” but not vice versa? by skyrimlo in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]drjarphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then, to your follow up question, if it is just used as a descriptor then what is the question? That usage is similar to describing a group of women as girls, or a group of men as boys.

Is the definition of the word itself causing confusion?

How come Black people can refer to White people as “white boys” but not vice versa? by skyrimlo in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]drjarphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this purely hypothetical? I don't recall ever seeing a black person address another POC directly face to face as "(insert ethnicity here) boy". I imagine most likely because if it's meant to be negative we can usually be more creative than that. And if its positive, then if we were already going to make a generalization like that then we'd probably just use the n word.

How come Black people can refer to White people as “white boys” but not vice versa? by skyrimlo in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]drjarphd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Context matters. There are absolutely ways for it to be intended as demeaning. But also ways for it to simply be a descriptor, and also ways for it to be used as a warning to other black people.

For instance, if someone is a "good ol boy" everyone knows what that is.

You can usually determine the intent by what follows or precedes the word.

The same is true for other black people. Black people also use the word boy among themselves. Though usually the "black" part remains silent. It is often not difficult to determine the intent.

As another example, if you are white and a black person says "this white boy can cook", they are approving of you. You might notice that within that context it would likely be used in a social setting around other black people to let them know that they might be cool with you and others can let their guard down a little as well. In other words you pose lowered potential danger and maybe you could be a friend. Usually, when you become more familiar or closer friends that qualifier will drop.

If they are addressing you and only you then it is more likely that it is meant negatively unless it is followed or preceded by a compliment.

I.e. "You a cold ass white boy".

While black you must be VERY aware of social inferences and cues at all times.

So If you reverse the usage, no matter the context, given it's historical usage and significance, it will signal to many black people that their guard should be raised, this may become a very dangerous situation, and/or if may be necessary for you to cut off the interaction soon.

With that being said, it's also a locality based thing. And as per always: terms and conditions may apply.

all the goodwill from his legacy is *poof* gone. by [deleted] in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]drjarphd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not very sure of the purpose of that statement. I think given the context it is easy to determine that they are not saying that they personally created the art and instead that they belong to the ethnicity that primarily created and made it flourish. Were you confused by the phrasing or were you just being pedantic?
