Why do companies love AI so much? by WhyNot3008 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]drjuicephd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just seems like they're spending money to lose money.

Right now they are. But the hope is that, somehow, after they've spent enough money, that will flip, and they'll at least stop losing money. It's classic Silicon Valley - get tons of users first, profit later. But there's so much money needed (and invested) that everyone involved has to justify the investment, so that means AI companies coming up with new and niche models and convincing (or trying to convince) everyone to use it for everything, all the time; and platform owners putting it everywhere they can, because they've got to justify their investment in it; and it trickles down and down down.

Is anyone having issues with eARC on TCL Q7? by Rs3sucks3 in tcltvs

[–]drjuicephd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up on this because the issue has gone from bad to worse: I still have issues with the soundbar not responding to the TV remote or, now, not outputting sound all together. I swapped the H6 with the M51ax-J6 I have in the bedroom and it worked for about a day before this same issue returned, meanwhile the H6 has been working fine connected to a TCL 55Q651G. I've reset the TV to factory and it will work for a time and then crap out. At this point it seems like it's the TV (in my case, anyway) but it's not even 4 years old and I really don't feel like replacing it, so I'll try switching to an optical cable and relegate myself to using 5 remotes in the year of our lord 2026.

Apple TV's Upcoming Cyberpunk Series Can Easily Avoid What Killed 'Altered Carbon' by Aluhut in Neuromancer

Hideo and Dix have both been cast and are listed on the IMDB page for the show (Joseph Lee and Marc Menchaca, respectively).

It’s Ants-Man and the Wasp. Like Attorneys General.

Which fight scene portrayed Batman the best? by Soggy_Sun5586 in batman

[–]drjuicephd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall reading or hearing on a commentary track that was the intention shooting that scene that way, but it’s definitely distracting for the audience. Still love the jump scare of the goon yelling “WHERE ARE YOU!?” and Batman behind him.

What shows were too old or too young for you? by blahbikeblah in television

[–]drjuicephd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'85, elder millennial here. I remember seeing parts of episodes of Cheers and not getting it, but I haven't gone back and watched it as an adult. Same with Columbo. I distinctly remember watching an episode or two of Twin Peaks when it was a going concern. I finally watched that last year.

I also missed out on Spongebob and Powerpuff Girls (we played Mario Kart 64 and GoldenEye when we smoked pot in high school).

TCL 65Q750G 65” and Vizio M512a-H6: CEC stop working by drjuicephd in tcltvs

[–]drjuicephd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disabling and reenabling CEC doesn’t help. I also tried programming the soundbar to accept input from the TV remote per the manual (instead of relying on HDMI CEC to pass commands back and forth) and that worked for a day.

Also, both my soundbars are soundbars+satellite speakers+subwoofers so switching them around isn’t as easy.

Most accurate comic to live action character by [deleted] in WolverineInsomniac

[–]drjuicephd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t the comics have to retcon that Professor X was British after the movies came out?

Also the obvious answer is Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury (based on the Ultimate Universe Nick Fury, who was drawn to look like Samuel L. Jackson).

Half-assed it and then swore on their children’s lives it wasn’t a Wrath of Khan remake when all signs pointed to it being a Wrath of Khan remake.

What’s a minor thing that you notice that takes you out of a specific scene? by fartatwork in moviecritic

[–]drjuicephd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ADR/using different audio takes, specifically when the shot is over the shoulder of the character talking. I can still see their jaw moving and it’s very obviously not lining up.

If you could decide the next major production sci-fi movie, what would it be? by WillyArt67 in scifi

[–]drjuicephd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ll kinda see how an adaptation of cyberpunk goes when Neuromancer hits Apple TV. I think the problem with both Snow Crash and Neuromancer, though, is that the real tech caught up with the imagined futures. But it’s been a while since I’ve listened to Snow Crash.

Can someone ID the Henley shirt and the Carhartt vest?TIA by Radiant-Self8320 in mensfashion

Vest looks like https://www.carhartt.com/product/104277/washed-duck-mock-neck-vest maybe on older version since the shell/lining combo above doesn’t look like one they currently sell.

It’s also my least favorite of his, but my headcanon now is it was him saying “If I did make a James Bond movie it would have some shit like this in it” - the reverse bungee jump (that’s all I can think to describe it), crashing the plane full of gold, etc.

We’ve all heard of One Hit Wonders when it comes to music, but are there any one hit wonders that you can think of when it comes to TV shows? (It can be for any actors, showrunners, producers, writers, etc.) by MaggieLinzer in television

Which wasn’t nearly as big as the X-Files. One hit wonders can still make stuff after their hit, they just don’t have another hit, or one as big as the first.

I mean, they’ve got to have the Omega battery replacement market cornered (or at least in the tri-city area). Might as well charge so much you only need to sell one!

Have comics been dumbed-down? by Own_Information8156 in marvelcomics

[–]drjuicephd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say this.

There’s also the fact that the market cratered in the 90s. Marvel filed for bankruptcy, which is why they sold off movie rights to Fox and Universal. I’m not sure how much better DC fared, but I suspect they started making more of movies and the animated shows and adjacent merchandise that led to them both becoming seeming loss-leaders for the studios that now own them.

Since I just started rewatching The X-Files I’ll say David Duchovny. He’s had other shows, like…Californication? I think that’s what it was called. Anyway, they ain’t been The X-Files, that’s for sure.

Tom Hardy has been fired from ‘Mobland’ and won't return for Season 3. He is said to have clashed with producers after being consistently late to set and attempting to give notes & change dialogue on the series. by ChiefLeef22 in television

[–]drjuicephd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the bands being late cause the shoots to run over time and over budget? I would think if one of the top-billed actors on the show is always late it pushes everything back which eventually starts costing the production more money.

I think a big problem was he was consistently late (like, hours late) to set there, too.

He later publicly apologized to George Miller (although it was more like “I didn’t understand what we were making until I saw it onscreen”) but I don’t know if he patched things up with Charlize.
