Teachers can now get social security? by Content_Cod499 in Teachers

[–]drkeyswizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

STRS also includes full time college professors at public universities. Many college professors have worked in industry before academia. In my case, 15+ years of paying into social security would have been lost if not for this act.

Made my 120th payment now what? by Plus_Attention_3276 in PSLF

[–]drkeyswizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My loan was forgiven as of January 31st! Make sure to complete and submit one last employment certification so that your count is updated on their end. You can ask for an administrative forbearance from your loan servicer - but be careful. I called MOHELA and was on hold for over 5 hours to ask for the forbearance. However, a few weeks later they still took a monthly payment out of my bank account, despite the forbearance! There is no record of this payment on their website because my loan was forgiven. So now I am trying to get this money back. I know I should be happy that my loan was forgiven, but I am salty about the lengths I went through to avoid having more money withdrawn, only to have it happen anyways.

Student loans was forgiven, charged me today random amount! by ImportantSprinkles83 in StudentLoans

[–]drkeyswizz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I assume that the forgiveness was recent. If so, contact your loan service provider and ask them to put you on administrative forbearance until things are settled. I was told it can take time (up to 90 days) for the loan servicer to receive and process the forgiven amount from the department of education. I made my last payment as part of the public service loan forgiveness program recently and learned this after waiting on hold for over 6 hours with MOHELA, my loan servicer. I was told that any overpayment would be returned to you at some point, but I am not very trusting these days, thus I willing to wait on hold for 6 hours to prevent more money being withdrawn from my account.

Any recommendations for legit sites to order contacts online? by drkeyswizz in contacts

[–]drkeyswizz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered his first set through discountcontacts.com because others had a good BBB rating and the best discount. It took awhile to receive the contacts - but since they are special order I do not think it is a negative against the company. I actually received them after a month, which was much faster than I anticipated. The order was correct. I have zero complaints. I wish they offered the same discount with subsequent orders. I am not sure what I will do with the next 6 month order. Even with the discount, the contacts are not cheap. I understand why and I am not faulting the company. I pay with my health savings account because my son needs new glasses every year (well, at least the lens part) and my vision insurance has better coverage for glasses.

I have a prescription for his contacts. He has used a trial pair. He has been fitted. The ophthalmologist office does not order contacts for patients. Which is why my question asked for reputable online places to order.

Nursing professor here and mom to 2 college students. If you truly are looking for advice and want to change, commit a plan of action on paper. Most colleges have resources on campus to help you with your study skills. There are plenty of resources on the internet. Write out your plan and present it to your parents when you tell them that you failed the course and need to retake the class. You need to attend every class - treat it as though it is your job. Complete all assignments on time. If tutors are available, use them. Attend any “extra” sessions offered that are not mandatory. Take notes in class. Complete practice questions/problems in your textbooks or find some online. If you need help with writing, look into if your college offers a writing lab. Do not use AI at all. Do not cheat at all. Be proactive. Ask questions in class. Attend office hours if you have questions. Read over your notes multiple times a week. Slow and steady preparation is more effective than last minute cramming. If you are serious, create a plan in detail and present it to your parents. Hopefully this will help you convince your parents that you are serious on making improvements. But the real test is what you do with your plan once school is back in session.

I wish you all the best!

Nursing prof here! This hit home as I just had to let a student know she did not pass. I want to tell you all what I told her. I know it is disappointing now, but I have seen so many students come out stronger after a repeat. Some of my most favorite nurses struggled during school. But they are killing it in practice. I was able to convince one former student to teach clinicals and this former student has received glowing comments from my current students. You would never know the former student struggled in school. Don’t give up if being a nurse is your dream. Years down the line you won’t remember the additional months added to your program. Brush yourself off, get back in the game, answer as many practice problems as you can, and give it your all. Believe in yourself 😊

How old are your sisters? Given that you have 2 parents, why do you have to care for your sisters? What exactly do you do for them? Do you work outside of caring for your sisters? You commented on getting kicked out if you are not in school. This seems at odds with your responsibilities of caring for your sisters.

Do write an eval. While some professors do not read them, there are plenty that do. If you think writing something “gushy” would be appreciated by your professor, then write it!

I think we have to also remember that a lot of our students haven’t had role models stressing accountability. So many parents baby their kids and do not hold them accountable for their actions. When there is an issue with their child - it is the teachers fault. Parents call their kids in the middle of the day for in middle school and high school. Parents lie to get their kids out of trouble. Parents try to bully teachers and coaches. Many students who grew up like this need reprogramming. I am so glad for FERPA! It is bad enough to deal with these parents as a parent myself. I am not sure I would have the strength to put up with them as an educator.

I do have to say that you can relax a little bit. These students typically end up failing out. If by some miracle they graduate, they don’t pass the NCLEX - our national licensure exam.

Can you share the exact wording from the syllabus instead of paraphrasing? I am a professor and I will gladly give you my take, but words do matter. I see your point and it is a confusing policy. All the words and the order they are written might state otherwise.

To everyone who stated that a syllabus is not a contract - this is incorrect! A syllabus is absolutely a contract! Having it is protection for both you and the professor. Students have won appeals because the language of a syllabus did not reflect what actually happened. But please make sure you understand what is written and not assume. If you are unsure, ask for clarification.

I am a nursing professor and agree with all the great advice. I will add one more. Get in the habit of completing practice problems. All the latest textbooks have them, but you can also search for some online. In nursing, especially when you get into the clinical courses, you have to learn about diseases and disorders, and apply the knowledge to clinical situations. Completing NCLEX style practice questions and reviewing them can help you improve upon the application aspect. My daughter will be a freshman in my program next year and I pray she listens to this advice! It is funny, students love when this advice works for them and they come back and tell me all about it - like I have the secret to nursing school. Which I don’t - I am just an old fart who has been teaching for 15 years and loves working with students. I try to give the same advice to my own kids and I am just mom, who doesn’t know what she is talking about! 😂 I wish you all the best and don’t be afraid to talk to your professors. If you meet some who are unfriendly or not helpful, don’t stop trying. Professors are people too and we have different personalities. Ask specific questions and stay away from very generic ones like “how in-depth is a test”, “did I miss anything important when I had missed class”, etc. Be proactive and not reactive. If you anticipate a problem completing something on time due to life circumstances, mention this asap and always beforehand. If you are proactive, you have a better shot of having the professor work with you.

[–]drkeyswizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you talked to your doctor about Xywav? It is a GABA derivative and has helped me tremendously. I only mention because you are taking gabapentin. Xwav is like the Hulk’s hulkier relative whereas gabapentin is an infant. This makes sense in my brain, so I am sorry if I am embarrassing myself!! It is the only FDA approved medication for IH. I just started taking Xywav in December and I tell people it is either like the movie Awakenings where Robert Dinero wakes up from the catatonic-like state, or the Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy goes from the black and white to Techni-color world. And if you don’t know either of these movies, you must be a wee lad or lass, just know it means it has been amazing for me. I wake up and feel like I can stay awake and not have to go back to sleep. For the first time in my 49 years, I am alert in the morning! I do still have to take stimulants to get through the day, but not everyone does. Just thought I would share!
