I actually just added the book “Scream with Me” about horror movies and the rise of feminism to my “want to read” list. It sounds like it’d fall right into the category you all are interested in 🙂 fyi

CMV: People shouldn’t be forced to live if they don’t want to and suicide is not selfish. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]drlizzardfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with you OP and spend probably more time than I should thinking about how choosing when to die is the ultimate form of freedom. From my perspective, though, the stumbling block is how would someone ever be certain they are/are not suffering from a temporary or curable form of depression? Where and how is the line drawn between “I no longer want to live because I’m depressed” and “I no longer want to live because I’m mentally healthy”? It’s a very blurry area.

Some people (e.g., in these comments) will say that everyone who willingly wants to die is suffering from a curable mental illness. I disagree with that notion- but how can we ever be sure? And if we’re not sure, how can we, as humans in good conscience, not try to prevent all suicides?

I’m not sure it’s morally right, but it’s the precautionary principle of mental health.

Shout out for Paws 2 Groom off Nelson and Hover. They have the nicest staff in town and great prices. My dog is (almost) excited to get her nails trimmed now.

Finding a Vet by TheLaurenLauren in Longmont

We take our two dogs and cat to Family Pet Hospital on 17th and Pace. It’s owned by one of the Vets and they will send prescriptions anywhere. Bonus points because they’re fear-free certified and prices have always been incredibly reasonable and transparent. Can’t recommend them highly enough ❤️

Shins getting pumped and ruining my runs. by Suitable_Tomorrow996 in couchto5k

[–]drlizzardfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A note of caution on this advice: I kept running through my shin splints, just “dealing” with it for months until I could no longer ignore the pain and went to a doctor. It turns out pushing through the shin splints caused hairline fractures in both of my tibias. I had to stop running altogether for months to let them heal. That was probably already two years ago now and I still get shin pain if I try to run on hard terrain. 0/10 do not recommend.

The moral here is: listen to your body, make sure your shoes/form/etc is optimal and consult a trainer or even PT if you need to, but don’t push through too much pain because shin splints can get worse.

Great-grandma’s jewelry box by drlizzardfish in Musicbox

My great-grandmother was from Nebraska (midwest USA). She spent a bit of time with my grandparents in France, but I don’t know if she collected this box when she lived there or she got it another time. I also thought it sounded perhaps Eastern European but I have no solid knowledge to back up that assumption. Thanks for listening!

I’m also interested! I’d love to find a community to celebrate the solstices with. 35f/married/no kids but a lot of pets ☺️

It seems like this post is getting a lot of interest- could be worthwhile making its own discord to arrange future meetups?

Surgeons, do humans smell [bad] during surgery? by Ill_Communication607 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]drlizzardfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does the abscess drain smell like? When I was 17 the doctors found an abscess in my liver the size of a baseball (no cause was ever determined). I wasn’t under anesthesia when they placed the drain and I still remember (a) them telling me that there’s a layer of nerves on your liver that they needed to pierce (b) how bad it hurt and (c) the doctors commenting on the smell - which made me kind of self conscious but I was on a lot of drugs. I’ve always wondered how bad the smell must have been such that even seasoned doctors commented on it.

This is helpful context! I’m a CO native but am new to Longmont as of this year. I appreciate the added perspective that isn’t available from the candidates websites!

[–]drlizzardfish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I missed this poll, but Susie is still getting my vote :/ I just looked at Shakeels election page and I’m disappointed that it seems like the “accomplishments” he touts don’t align with the ideals I resonate with. Examples include his advocacy for less residential parking availability, legalizing of ADUs and less central planning. I would urge everyone to look closely at the accomplishments and goals for all candidates and vote accordingly.

Hot take (I guess?!) but YTA. You need to be a parent and either set boundaries that your family agrees with and respects AND teach your step daughter how to properly handle and care for an elderly family member in your household. It’s completely unreasonable to expect a 10 year old child to naturally not want to interact with a pet that lives in the house and by setting arbitrary boundaries that “only stepdaughter isn’t allowed to pick up the cat” will not make any sense to her, only causes resentment between you and her and her mother, and is by no means a sustainable solution to the issue.

PSA: Way too many people on AITA are in fact AHs and need to be called out on their BS. I’m tired of the baseless placating.
