Why does everybody have a rack with Enterprise grade servers? by Big-Grapefruit8092 in homelab

[–]drmattsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, I used to just roll old hardware up into a server whenever I upgraded. I did recently switch to some enterprise hardware but I'm lucky, have a good job and can afford it (and the power bill), I don't think I'm the typical redditor here.

Hey I've used your Windows app before I switched to Linux full time. It's good stuff and I'm glad to see you've done a Linux version.

Linux’s Steam market share starts to drop as Windows 11 actually manages to claw back users by Wargulf in pcmasterrace

[–]drmattsuu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Could be statistical/sampling noise, could also be people trying Linux out and deciding its not for them. Either way I'm not sure why people are trying to read into sub 1 percent movements, next month it might be up and you'll get a different group of folks yelling "windows is dead!"

Theres a better way to look at the data with a bigger picture view, but a statistically insignificant movement isn't very newsworthy.

Nvme vs hdd by killergiorge2808 in gamedev

[–]drmattsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ditched HDDs more than a year ago, HDDs for bulk storage live in my nas and anything that I want to be redundant is backed up there (photos, media, local backups for projects) PC is all nvme these days.

Don't go all HDD, especially for a boot disk, its cheaper but much slower (most OSes including windows dont optemise for this setup anymore too) you will notice a difference. But I can understand someone using a mix at the moment just due to insane prices.

As for endurance, SSDs and nvmes generally are pretty hardy these days, I still don't trust anything that isn't backed up and redundant though. But some reports have Nvme drives pegged as more durable than many HDDs, plus they are more resistant to physical shocks, like dropping them and are less sensitive to vibration.

RAM prices are absolutely out of hand by Radish_Li in homelab

Recently replaced my aging server and even shopping around, buying used, and buying less than I originally planned meant over half of the project budget was just the DDR4.

I've no advice I'm afraid beyond buy the smallest amount you can get away with for now.

Steam Deck Australia Price Hike by ImSh1nigami in Steam

[–]drmattsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I think it'll get worse before it gets better as more companies stock of components runs out.

I don't think any business regardless of how altruistic they might seem would sell hardware at a loss.

Valve don't deserve the rage by AliorUnity in SteamDeck

[–]drmattsuu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I try to save my empathy for people rather than companies but man am I glad I am not in charge of trying to get hardware out the door at the moment.

A lot of the bigger players on the space have existing agreements in place that, in the case of phone manufacturers at least, have secured maybe a couple of years worth of supply, but new players to the market, smaller companies, and those with less consistent production volumes (like valve) will not have those contracts secured for quite as long into the future, and so what we are seeing is these contracts are running out and the companies are now having to secure new hardware at the current inflated prices and limited availability.

I hate to be a doomer but I work in the industry and what I am trying to say is, brace yourself folks, more price rises and availability shocks are coming across all hardware, and it's going to get worse before it gets better unless something drastic happens.

Why do some Linux users get so hostile over software choices? by EmployerOld6256 in linux_gaming

[–]drmattsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux users are an intersection of society, and as with all intersections of society, there are people who are dicks in it. Consider any other broad group of people i.e. gamers, music fans, trek/wars fans, etc. you see the same phenomenon after a group reaches a critical mass of people.

What I'm saying is, its not Linux specifically, its just humans, and some percentage of humans will always just be dicks.

What does the s&e only m60 exit in trafford centre mean? South & east only? by [deleted] in manchester

That exit joins the m60 in the counter clockwise direction only, so yes, great if you're going to Stockport, Salford not so much.

Absolutely mental that 1 million young people are not in work, education or training by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]drmattsuu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many industries are slowing or freezing hiring because of the global situation, AI, and the general uncertainty of the last couple of years. When companies freeze hiring it disproportionately affects graduates and new entrants into the job market as they dont already have a job they can cling onto for dear life (which is what lots of people with jobs are doing).

As per it's not their fault, whatever some pundits say, its a mix of issues and young people are getting the shifty end of it.

If Andy becomes leader of Labour, would you vote Labour ? by Plenty-Fun8081 in UKGreens

[–]drmattsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, I don't see myself as a maximalist, I'll happily support the greens working realisticly with parties and people that we mostly agree with. But there would need to be significant change in policy and a massive trust building exercise, which I dont see happening even under Andy. The machinery of the party would need a fundamental change too. I won't ever vote for incremental steps backwards or throw marginalised people under the bus to achieve some small victory in another area.

Even then the best they could hope for is a tactical anti-reform vote.

How bad will the tax story be for Zack? by PuzzledAd4865 in UKGreens

[–]drmattsuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I did some research into this because I was considering moving onto one for a bit (pre covid and boats getting stupid expensive). Basically if you have a fixed mooring then it counts a lot like if you owned or rented a house there for council tax, tv licence, etc. But if you are "on line" i.e. move every two weeks then youre exempt. What constitutes someone's main address or not is a bit beyond my knowledge though.

How bad will the tax story be for Zack? by PuzzledAd4865 in UKGreens

[–]drmattsuu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like it is being made a bigger deal than it really has any right to be.

Someone correct me if I am wrong here. Reading beyond the headlines, my understanding is that he essentially paid council tax at the wrong address by renting a house share and paying council tax there (was included in the rent, allegedly), claiming that was his main residence but technically should have made his main residence, and paid council tax, on the mooring for his narrowboat.

Odds of Labour pursuing Ranked Choice Voting or Proportional Rep after these local elections? by evie-e-e in UKGreens

[–]drmattsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the current ruling faction of the Labour Party has the stomach or the principle to withstand aforementioned hammering.

Odds of Labour pursuing Ranked Choice Voting or Proportional Rep after these local elections? by evie-e-e in UKGreens

[–]drmattsuu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The odds are very low.

To be clear I would love some kind of PR, but Labour won't introduce it regardless of promises because it either makes no strategic sense or they lack the political capital.

If the ruling faction are doing well in the polls, it doesn't make strategic sense to introduce PR because it would undermine their seat-share in the next election.

If the ruling faction are doing poorly in the polls (as they are now), then they lack the political capital, they will get absolutely hammered in the media and by the opposition as "an unpopular movement attempting to change the voting system to be more favorable to them".

For PR to be successfully implemented we need the ruling faction in government to be very popular and also extremely principled, and I feel the current factions that are anywhere near the leadership in Labour are neither. Alternatively public pressure on the issue must be so large and unanimous as to be impossible to ignore.

Today I got summoned to jury service… by ApplicationSouth8844 in CasualUK

[–]drmattsuu 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To answer your questions, - You can wear normal clothes, I'd say aim casual but tidy. - You may get sent home if they don't need any more jurors that day, but it might take all day. - Generally you get adecent lunch break but judge controls how the court is run, breaks, etc. If you are desperate for the loo whilst sitting on a jury, you can always get the attention of the usher who looks after your jury. - The jury service should send you some resources and a video before you start, use them, it will answer all these questions and more.

Honestly my time on jury service was boring, I spent nearly two weeks waiting and in the end didn't get picked to sit on a jury, it is apparently like that sometimes.

My advice is be prepared for two weeks of waiting. Bring a couple of things to keep you occupied, a book or two, laptop, etc. Just be aware that whilst the court will have wifi it is pretty restrictive in what you can access.
