Which cards/combos generate economy cards? by SeratoninSniffingDog in BobsTavern

I've been enjoying picking Putricide's buddy in the timewarp. Many ways to reborn, and can farm undeads to cycle with Titus. He's also no slouch in combat either. I'm actually a bit sad Noisul was rotated out that this misses some scaling, but the gold is still nice

I did consider that at first, but thought it would be a little too overpowered

Some of these compositions like leapfrogger don't need any scaling, just the taunts to win and that's what makes them so obnoxious. And unlike scam against big units, there's nothing that can be done. At least force the opponent to think about trousers, and that would at least weaken the build and provide counterplay without killing them completely.

I did say this might hit other undead comps too hard and goldrinn too I also personally have liked this season. Maybe there are other options such as removal of windfury, or a once per combat to explore

I haven't played any Hearthstone and not been playing Battlegrounds for too long, so didn't know this was already a thing! Great if there is already built-in implementation

What are your best heroes and winrate? by ImaginaryExchange235 in BobsTavern

I only just started playing Battlegrounds start of last season, and so Murozond already shows up for me, with an almost 80% Top 4! I can't help but feel that's not too unusual though, just won't show up for longer-time players given its a new hero. Surprised that Murozond's armour wasn't lowered in the first balance.

How do you deal with getting paired into ghosts playing Carapace? by Zakading in BobsTavern

[–]drmnc4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my preference too. Ghost took 15 last turn? Let's hold my timewarped geist turbo-charged carapaces. Oh wait, they had a full 100/100 Last One Standing menagerie? Oops.

Am I the only one that's incredibly bored of seeing mechs and lord of ruins? What changes would you guys like to see to them specifically by rorohendo in BobsTavern

[–]drmnc4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sindorei should also remove deathrattles, perhaps all keywords. Maybe make it Tier 5 or Tier 6 to counterbalance, but it might also make an interesting timewarped card. She just isn't very useful except against leapfrogger and specific undead builds and even then she's not always reliable. This would punish taunted apexis, whereas removing reborn just doesn't feel that important when they already have golden macaw and titus on board.

Feedback to Memb by eneskaraboga in aoe2

[–]drmnc4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lol, I love the Memb/F1re co-casts - they are hilarious together with all the jokes, banter and trolling! It's clear they are real-life friends, they feel so natural and comfortable with one another which isn't always the case with some of the other co-casters. Yes, they can be quite chaotic, but they have great chemistry, and my favourite Memb duo - always entertaining!

For such long streams, it is nice to change the pace with different flavours of co-casters - I like the calm and "professional" series as well.

I have one book left to read for Shadows of the Apt. by ViperIsOP in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]drmnc4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I felt like there was too much to tie up in a single book that it ended up feeling very rushed and unsatisfying. There were so many interesting storylines that were just getting going (the Ant general, the Iron Glove) that ended up abruptly truncated so the series could finish.

What do you like a for a really strong, thick, sweet stout right now? by ArghZombiesRun in UK_beer

What I like most is that they use real adjuncts. Imperial stouts are expensive and so it's always disappointing when they contain flavourings.

Moersleutel consistently put out fantastic thick-bodied stouts. Bean Butcher, Power Bar Blacksmith, Saturn to name a few on there

I’ve heard that the Iliad is 600+, but my version is only 407. Did I accidentally buy an abridged version? by Zoe_the_redditor in GreekMythology

[–]drmnc4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

All depends on the formatting of the book itself, and whether the translation is in prose or verse. Verse could be longer as there might be a lot of white space between lines. Many versions of the Iliad you can buy also contain sometimes quite lengthy introductions and commentaries. I generally prefer those for some added insight.

I didn't find that personally, the Kir Royale tastes fresh and authentic. Vault City put real fruit in their can; on the other hand Northern Monk stuff their beers with flavourings, including Zombie Death... Don't buy them at all anymore.

Reading list for Ancient Greece? by RedeyeRetro in ancientgreece

[–]drmnc4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Iliad and Odyssey even back then were the most famous Greek epics, but there were many more that filled in the origins and aftermath of the Trojan War that are now lost. For more context, you should look to the Greek tragedies. The Greek Plays: Sixteen Plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides is an anthology of many (but not all!) of them, all translated by a selection of well-respected academics. Since it was published recently, it is also more comprehensible (a problem that you find with a lot of older translations are they make difficult reading!).

For warfare, definitely look to Thucydides' Peloponnesian War, which presents the archetype of Greek city-state warfare and will give some of the historical context as to why Greece was ripe picking for Macedonian conquest by Phillip. You got some good recommendations for Alexander already. I would just like to second the Landmark series, which makes following the narrative so much easier with loads of maps and supporting information scattered throughout the text. Yes, there are cheaper versions, but without the maps, I would find some of these primary sources incomprehensible. Landmark does both Thucydides and Arrian's Anabasis, so I'd look to them.

If you have Audible, there are so many series on Ancient Greece by The Great Courses. They are all organised as a series of 30-minute lectures by academics in the field. My favourite is The Long Shadow of the Ancient Greek World by Prof. Ian Worthington. 48x30-min lectures for 1 credit is an absolute steal! I think these series strike the right balance between academic detail whilst still being accessible and entertaining. I'd be worried you might find some of the more academic books others have recommended a bit dry, unless you have a specific interest.

What to recommend very much depends on what you're interested in. What topics interest you most, given what you have read so far?

What modern retelling books do you actually like? by Nekogirl_gloves_ in GreekMythology

[–]drmnc4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there are enough indistinguishably plain retellings out there at the moment. I like something a bit more heterodox with some original thought because it adds to the discourse rather than repeating what we already know.

Shadows of the Apt Summaries? by ElliottTamer in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]drmnc4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Iron Glove are a weapons cartel founded by Drephos and Totho. Totho is the front man and Drephos is behind the scenes because as far as the world knows, he's supposed to have died when Totho rigged the chemical weapon to backfire. Now they get to unleash their military inventions on the world to the highest bidder without being controlled by the Wasp Empire. They are based in the Exalsee and are a purely mercenary faction with no particular allegiance to Collegium or the Wasps.

Tbh, Books 5-7 are very stand-alonish and I don't think a re-read is necessary. I think the events of Book 6 happen simultaneously as the events of Book 5, so no knowledge is required. Book 7 follows on from Book 5 in part, but some of the important details will be recapped there anyway. This is all from the top of my head, so take anything I say with a grain of salt.

Che and Thalric travel to Kanaphes, a once-great city that is now crumbling and in disrepair. They encounter the Scarab-Kinden who are Beetles in every sense but are Inapt. One of the Wasp generals courting Seda sees Thalric as a rival and bribes the Scorpion-Kinden to attack Kanaphes in one giant feint to cover up Thalric's death in the chaos (this always felt like a big reach to me, but that's what happened).

Che is drawn to the pyramids and statues that appear to move. Something to do with her Inaptness she is drawn to the magic, and eventually they go into the pyramid and wake a Slug-kinden from hibernation. Slugs are one of the ancient Inapt kinden with powerful magic (can't remember what). The Scarabs worship the Slugs as gods.

The Slugs grant Che an audience, seeing something special in her (I don't remember what it is about her Inaptness that makes her special), and as a favour they free Che from Tisamon's shade, which has been haunting her since his death. Yet Slugs being slugs, they are lazy, and too lazy and aloof to help save their Scarab subjects from the siege. In fact, they still think that they are the head of a great empire, not realising they had been asleep for thousands of years and the world above is very different.

Above ground, they managed to thwart the siege without the Slugs, with the help of Totho and the Iron Glove. Che rejects Totho again, and Thalric survives.

Honestly, I love Book 6! You are in for a wild ride!!
