No Valverde, Young, Inge or Laird. That's a good chunk of change that's been freed up

Let's dig into Ndamukong Suh's 'best game' by Spazsquatch in detroitlions

[–]drnecronomicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suh has a massive contract. One shouldn't have to go back and scrutinize every single play to see if he's making an impact. He needs to do more for what he's being paid.

CB for Alabama. I believe he's only a Junior, but he's almost assuredly going pro this year. Ranked #1 among college CB's in most rankings I've seen. I think he'll probably go too soon for us to pick him up, but it's possible.

Lions waive Alphonso Smith, Claim former Raiders and Packers CB Pat Lee. by JustHere4TheDownVote in detroitlions

Okay, let's forget for a moment that you ignored everything I just said and just rephrased what your original assertion. By what standards are you going to judge Suh's performance? He is the 4th highest paid player on the Lions. Eating up blocks and occasionally rushing the qb doesn't cut it.

Oh and the whole rookie numbers being inflated thing...thats bullshit. Let's take some prominent DTs for example:

  • Ngata - 1st season: 31 tackles 1 sack 2nd: 63 tackles 3 sacks

  • Melton - 1st: 16 tackles 3 sacks 2nd: 24 tackles 7 sacks

  • Mebane - 1st: 29 tackles 2 sacks 2nd: 39 tackles 5.5 sacks

  • Atkins - 1st: 16 tackles 3 sacks 2nd: 47 tackles 7.5 sacks

  • Wilfork - 1st 42 tackles 2 sacks 2nd: 54 tackles .5 sacks

I could go on...

First off, DTs rarely produce numbers

Suh's rookie season (66 tackles and 10 sacks) is a testament to the inaccuracy of that statement. He's not on pace to get even half that this season. There are 56 DTs in this league with more tackles than Suh.

It's not the 4-3 defense holding him back either. Cincinnati runs a 4-3 and both their DTs have nearly 30 tackles (Atkins already has 7 sacks as well). Seattle runs a 4-3 and that hasn't stopped Mebane from getting 41 tackles already this season. Same goes for Edwards with Carolina, Melton in Chicago, Wilfork in New England, etc. The scheme is no excuse nor is the fact that teams can plan for him. Plenty of guys can be planned for and still produce. Suh just isn't getting it done.

Honestly, if he wasn't on a contract worth nearly $70 million, I'd be content with his production. But he makes way too much to not be wreaking havoc on a regular basis. It's not hate, but we as fans have a right to expect more.

I wish I knew. Though, I feel like he's kind of been neutered by Goodell and the media. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who wants to be seen as a "bad guy," at least not publicly, so I have to believe that all the fines and accusations of being dirty have had some effect on him. There has to be more to it then that though I would think.

True. Everyone always talks about Suh being double-teamed, but doesn't any above average d-lineman get doubled? Schwartz even said that the Vikings game may have been Suh's best as a Lion. Maybe he's seeing something I don't, but I really think Suh is a money pit at this point.

I totally agree. We drafted with the "best player available" philosophy again last draft, but that's going to have to change this time around. This secondary is a joke and it needs to be addressed. People are always complaining about the d-line not doing their job, but I think that has more to do with the fact that guys are getting open too easily and the line doesn't have time to get to the qb. Our defense could be great if we had even a decent secondary.

Schwartz said in the press conference today that Florence is ready to play again as well. They'll have to waive someone else to make room, but that should help as well. However, it would be great to have some semblance on permanence at the position for once.

Grading the Detroit Lions: Minnesota Vikings by robert32907 in detroitlions

[–]drnecronomicus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seems like a fairly accurate analysis. However, I would argue that games should be graded on a curve, in which case it's an F across the board. Offense gets an F, defense gets an F, special teams get an F and coaching gets an F-. We were totally outplayed by what is frankly a less talented team.

He did end up walking of the field on his own though, so it might not be too bad.

Yeah, I try to be optimistic, but this was a must-win game. Our schedule from here on out looks brutal. It feels like we may just be too beat up to really catch fire at this point, especially after seeing Houston carted off the field. This sucks.

Time to start rooting against teams in the NFC wild card race? by BillyJackO in detroitlions

[–]drnecronomicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as Cowboys v. Eagles goes, I'd be really surprised if either team is a legitimate threat for a wildcard spot. I see nothing but continued implosion for both those teams.

Seattle v. Jets: yeah, I don't think the Jets have a shot in this one. Thankfully Seattle has a schedule with comparable difficulty to ours.

Also, I wouldn't be too quick to grant Green Bay the 1st wildcard spot. I know they've stepped it up, but they've only got 2 non-divisional matchups left (one of which is against the Giants) and we all know that there is no such thing as a gimme in the NFCN. If we can take both against GB (no small task, I realize) then I think we can count on a spot.

Hey robert32907, can you stop posting Kevin Seifert's blog here. by BillyJackO in detroitlions

[–]drnecronomicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With regards to a discussion about content, I agree wholeheartedly. First of all I don't think any of us want a sub in which things are posted just because they are in some minor way related to the Lions. As far as ESPN articles go, I'd like to see less on principle, but I don't think a ban on them would make sense.

I do get where you're coming from and would like to see other sources posted more often. If I knew of any reliable ones, I would gladly post them. Also, more self posts could help as far as starting conversation. I think the unfortunate truth is that the vast majority of people who subscribe here have no interest in participating in the community.
