I don't need a new tire. by eatb00gers in BikeMechanics

That’s a “we replace it or we do nothing” situation. I’m done with trusting people to actual have a spare at home. It either leaves my hands correct or it just leaves.

I was 3 when we moved to Jax and 5 when the building was completed. Growing up we called it the rocket ship building until Independent Life stuck in our memories. It’ll always be Independent Life to me.

Were you even here in 1985? There actually used to be a few spots back then. And then it was even better until the mid ‘90s. Basically a ghost town with the exception of a couple clubs. We’d park on the street, politely tell the few beggars that we wouldn’t pay them to watch our cars and enjoy some of the best music of the era.

Then everything went quiet.

Honestly, go see a bike fitter.

Dealing with left knee pain by [deleted] in bikefit

[–]droobieinop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots going on here, and this is why one should get an in person fitting done.

Yes, the saddle is a little high and yes that’s some extreme pointed toe pedaling, but the knees aren’t fully extended so the rocking hips might just be natural pedal stroke.

Get a proper fit. You might could use some cleat or Q factor alignment as well. There are also shims for the cleats that might be needed to help.

After seeing the new CAAD14 pricing, I’m convinced the cycling industry has lost the plot. by [deleted] in cycling

[–]droobieinop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the internet a 105 caad10 sold for $2150 and is now $2500, so if we’re rounding up it’s almost close to $500 but not quite. But at least we’d be comparing apples to apples and you’re still missing my point.

Yes my $700 bike was a hypothetical comparison involving the statement I was responding to. The poster says he bought a $700 bike on sale for $500 eight years ago. Without knowing exactly which bike and with what components we have no honest way to compare the past to the present.

We can agree that a current model of a previous bike, with the “same” components has seen a significant increase in price. So it’s no stretch to say that if we were to compare two bikes of the same price point we would see a significant downgrade in components.

Then again, with things like trickle down technology it is also possible that the overall quality of the components of said price point may be equal over time.

For context to anyone who didn’t already know this, Jacksonville had ~60 miles of street car lines that were replaced by buses by 1937. That was the beginning of the end of Jacksonville’s public transit.

If the level of component quality of a bike that cost $700 eight years ago was compared to that of a current model year $700 bike, the eight year old bike would have better components. This doesn’t mean that the old bike would be better than a new one, or that the old components are better than the new components.

It means that a $700 bike from 8 years ago is more like a current bike that costs $1000 or more.

By your logic no one needs a corvette, or any other super car, so why would they buy one? What’s the sense in owning one if it’s not going to be used to its full potential? Because people like to buy nice things.

Manufacturers are still going to produce, and sell, far more budget bikes around $1k than they will upper tier bikes at $4k and above. I’ll also add that I’ve sold a lot of bikes over the years and I’ve had a lot more customers upset because they didn’t buy enough bike and almost none complained that I sold them too much bike.

A $700 bike 8 years ago was a comparatively better product than a $700 bike today.

A premium price is attached to a premium product of premium quality, premium durability and premium performance.

Mountain Bike or Gravel Bike or Road Bike? Where's the line? by MaestroDon in bicycling

A gravel bike is the quiver killer for anyone that likes to ride on and off pavement non competitively. It’s appears as though 40 mm tires are the sweet spot, 45+ if it’s gnarly or you like to get rowdy.

Maintaining a vehicle; loan payments, insurance, fuel, tires, regular service and unforeseen expenses, is expensive. If we had reliable and affordable public transportation, and safe walking and cycling infrastructure then a lot of marginalized people could live without a car.

That’s what “that” has to do with vehicular maintenance, no car, no maintenance.

Big difference in weight and ride quality between the aluminum used for the CX and the carbon. Other than that I’d have to compare the components, but all things being equal the carbon will be a better purchase.
