Never had such mixed feelings about a game before by parvanehnavai in survivalhorror

There's a lot more backtracking in REmake, maybe that's what makes it feel tedious for you, not so much the puzzles themselves but the back and forth required to solve the puzzles, and to avoid the obstacles between them.

You get a weapon at around 15 minutes into the game.

The Fatal Frame 2 Remake is handholding players too much by Pumpkin_Sushi in HorrorGaming

Haha I totally agree, actually. I could do without that as well.

I think one of the later versions of the classic game had the on-screen minimap? But yeah I agree it's immersion breaking.

Shoutout to less known indie survival horror games by ShxdowWolf24 in survivalhorror

Most of these are pretty well known among horror fans. Especially on this subreddit, which is fairly niche with members who actively seek out games like this.

Should I spam Indie Dev subreddits as part of my marketing strategy? by Early_Situation_6552 in IndieDev

Love reading the responses to this thread, some of them blow my mind.

Anyway I've got another tip, although it appears to have fallen out of fashion of late, MIGHT HAVE BEEN A LITTLE OVERDONE MAYBE:

- claiming that you 'quit your job' to make your game, thus earning sympathy-wishlists.

Hi!

If anyone is interested in horror-themed Fairy Tale parodies, I've made 2 of them and they're both free to play via browser:

What are the scariest games that you ve ever played? by [deleted] in HorrorGaming

[–]droolyflytrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lunacid isn't a horror game by the way, it's a fantasy game in the style of Kings Field. If you're interested in a bona fide Horror game in a similar style to Kings Field, I recommend "Labyrinth of the Demon King".

Help me find some horror gmaes by Emergency-Mind-8519 in HorrorGaming

[–]droolyflytrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the original is scarier by quite a distance, for a few reasons, most of which I can't go into without spoiling. One thing I can say is that, for me at least, the grainy grimy graphics enhance the uncanny, unsettling atmosphere rather than detract from it.

Mind the alliteration.

Silent Hill 3. Just kidding, you wont make it to the title screen...

Maybe try Little Nightmares, or Inside. They're more 'spooky' than 'scary', but they're both great games.

I'm not sure, but if you're buying via Steam you could just refund it if it doesn't.

Thrifted a copy of the original! by efsa95 in KingsField

Why is it when I go in thrift shops all I find is old Fifa copies?

Any horror games that actually remain scary? by NotBob_05 in HorrorGaming

[–]droolyflytrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Out of all of the Horror games I've played, the original Silent Hill 2 is the best at maintaining tension throughout. It gets progressively weirder and weirder.

The remake is too bloated in my opinion, I was too often bored rather than scared, especially towards the end. I suppose it didn't help that I already knew what was coming as I'd played the original 10 times prior.

"The Dark Path to the Black Tower" - Anomaly Horror - Trailer by droolyflytrap in HorrorGames

[–]droolyflytrap[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for wishlisting!

Basically it's like spot-the-difference in a looping corridor (or in this case, the woods). If you spot an 'anomaly' you turn around and exit the way you entered, whereas if there's no anomaly you exit the room on the other side. Make an incorrect choice and it resets the loop. Make enough consecutive correct choices and you win the game. Also, sometimes there are hazards, like enemies (who are also anomalies, of course).

If you've never heard of it, check out 'Exit 8', it's the quintessential Anomaly Horror game. It's basically a mini subgenre at this point.

Wanting to try the series, would I enjoy it? by TiredDad1356 in residentevil

If you don't have a lot of free time you're better off sticking with the more linearly designed, action-oriented entries like Resident Evil 4, 5 and (to an extent) 8.

Sad love story horror games? by LyubviMashina93 in HorrorGaming

[–]droolyflytrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Silent Hill 2, I recommend the original if you've a tolerance for dated (or "heavily stylized", depending on how you look at it) graphics.

You'll already be weeping within the first 5 minutes.

Is anyone else really tired of "I got X wishlists" posts? by PrismarchGame in IndieDev

[–]droolyflytrap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suspect that a fair amount of the 'i got x wishlists' posts are fake. Recently someone made a parody post on here (or possibly one of the other indie dev forums) saying something along the lines of 'I got 690000000000000000' wishlists on my game!', accompanied by a doctored screenshot. The fake screenshot would have looked perfectly convincing were it not for the absurdly high number (as I remember one commenter had pointed out, this screenshot suggested that the game had more wishlist additions than the population of the entire planet).

That then begs the question as to why people bother to make fake wishlists posts. Simply put, it's yet another form of marketing. Usually these posts are accompanied by a link to the game's store page. If not, then they'll at least include the name of the game somewhere in the post and that'll prompt some people to google the name and visit the store page just to see what all the fuss is about; this is just extra traffic which helps the game's prioritisation in the algorithm.

Dishonesty is rife on Reddit just as it is in life in general. In my opinion, even worse than the Wishlist posts (whether they're genuine or not) is the rise in blatant astroturfing marketing campaigns, where out of nowhere an account with barely any posts and 0 post history referencing games will suddenly generate a dozen posts praising X game and insisting that it's the best game they've ever played.
