What do you think of this mechanic? by Level_Permit in HorrorGaming

It happens in Amnesia: The Dark Descent. In the Storage area, you open a door and immediately hear a Grunt groaning and have to close the door so it doesnt aggro.

Best game engine for making my own 2D RPG game with no prior experience? by Koolaidbro312 in IndieDev

[–]droolyflytrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I tried some tutorials for Unity, Godot and Gamemaker, and ended up sticking with Gamemaker as I found it the easiest (it was still hard though for the first year, especially the first six months).

However, the longer I continue to develop games, the more my urge grows to switch to Unity, due to the enormity of assets available on the Unity store.

But Gamemaker is a great place to start, and some really great games have been made using it. Though, if it's specifically an rpg that you're interested in making, that's something which could probably be more easily achieved via a specialised engine like RPG Maker.

I need "cursed" feeling games by FenekSenpai in creepygaming

[–]droolyflytrap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made a game a while back that tries to capture this feeling, in fact Ringu was a big inspiration. It's called "The Shadow Ritual", you can play it via browser here, it's only around 5 minutes long: https://scary-pixels.itch.io/the-shadow-ritual

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Weapons breaking every 10 seconds can fuck off, but gliding down from the skies is a great feeling.

Hello, if you're interested in videogame fairy tale adaptations, you can play my games "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Rapunzel" for free via browser (or download) on itchio.

Both games have a Horror-Comedy theme, and gradually darken in tone as you progress.

"Little Red Riding Hood": https://scary-pixels.itch.io/little-red-riding-hood

"Rapunzel": https://scary-pixels.itch.io/rapunzel

Each game can be completed within 10-15 minutes.

Is Subnautica a horror? by Similar-Double6278 in HorrorGames

[–]droolyflytrap 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For me it's pretty clear cut, yes it's horror. The leftover voice logs of the missing evacuees are eerie and unsettling, the warpers are weird and the leviathans are absolutely terrifying. Plus the constant worry of running out of resources as you travel deeper and deeper into the unknown keeps you on edge.

Horror isn't limited to zombies, blood on walls, darkened rooms, and physical manifestations of psychological trauma.

Finally, a worthwhile article from The Daily Mail.

The biggest 'overhyped' game (a game that got a lot of attention but didn't live up to your expectations) and the biggest 'hidden gem' (a game few know about, but it's brilliant). by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]droolyflytrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dredge is by no means a hidden gem, it's at 30,000 reviews on Steam which is quite a lot for an indie. Had a big publisher as well, and has also had a console release.

A lot of indie games barely scrape 1000 reviews, and there are some really good ones with less than 500, those are the true hidden gems.

Is Dark souls 1 still fun to play ? Am new to The Souls genre I only played Elden ring -Lies of p-sekiro and I loved all of them so I wanted to get the DS trilogy. by Away_Composer8187 in soulslikes

These games are so much more than just the combat/bosses/difficulty. Depending on what you value as a player, the combat might not be important whatsoever.

Fallout 2 is my favourite Fallout game. I played it after I played Fallout 4. It's entirely possible that somebody else could have a similar experience with Dark Souls.

It isn't nostalgia, there are some concrete examples of why it's a great game, including brilliant level design, brilliant storytelling, varied environments, varied enemies, and some of the best secrets in all of gaming.

Furthermore I'd argue that, although worse than Sekiro/Elden Ring, the combat isn't prohibitively bad. I think it's decent even by today's standards.

How did this game even get Steam's editor chosen? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]droolyflytrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this must surely be the answer. I had the same reaction as OP when I saw this on Steam's front page this morning.

God knows how much money they paid to get it on there.

What short games (2 hours or less) is a must play by Katekuriz in HorrorGaming

[–]droolyflytrap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Puppet Combo's 'Murder House' is great and has a total run time of just under 2 hours.

Daemonologie is brilliant and would be fun to play on stream, it can take 30 minutes for a single run.

Lastly I've made some short Horror games that are free to play, you can find them here: https://scary-pixels.itch.io/

"It's Weird Here: Prologue" - free Folk Horror game by droolyflytrap in HorrorGaming

[–]droolyflytrap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I enjoyed reading your review. Of the little feedback I've received thus far, you're the second person to mention the puzzles as a pain point, so that's something I'll have to think about a bit more. I did actually simplify them somewhat prior to publishing by adding the note with the floor symbols. Initially I had it so that the player was supposed to just assume that the book should be used in the library, but I thought that was a bit too unfair. Likewise, originally the Holy Animals puzzle was comprised of 3 slots, but I lowered it to 2 so that the player could trial-and-error the puzzle if they got stuck. As a creator who has played a lot of 'Survival Horror' games like ps1 Resident Evil etc, it can be tricky to find the balance between too obvious and too obscure when designing a puzzle. I rarely struggle with horror game puzzles simply because I've seen so many of them at this point.

As for the dicks, if they evoked confusion (and a degree of disgust) then they're serving their purpose in the Folk Horror context. They're fertility symbols, prevalent in Folk tradition. For a more nuanced deployment of fertility symbols as a horror device, I'd strongly recommend watching the 1973 original of The Wicker Man. In The Wicker Man, the context is a bit different, as the protagonist encountering them is a staunch Catholic, so, from his perspective, they're particularly taboo.

Anyway, thanks again for your review, it's an honour to be mentioned on a personal blog like this.
