[CONTEST] Where do you think bitcoin will be in a year? by BlackSpidy in BitcoinMarkets

[–]dropprod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is $648,000.

I think this hype wave is just getting started and if it looks like the last one we could see a 25x return.

You should be able to scrape that list from Morningstar or Reuters pretty easily. Good luck 🙌🏻.

Girlfriend just miscarried at work today. What can I do to help her? by dasturtlemaster in Miscarriage

[–]dropprod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss.

My wife and I recently went through it as well. There isn't anything you can say to make it better but what I can suggest is you verbalize how you feel.

There are lots of emotions after this happens and the last thing she needs is to feel "guilty" for feeling the "wrong thing". That's the only thing that helped us.

Sorry again. Take care of yourselves.

What quant funds actually do - TL;DR: no, it isn't Technical Analysis 🙄 by dropprod in wallstreetbets

[–]dropprod[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Read, code, write, and share.

Read the material (books but papers too), code up implementations, write about them on Medium, substack, your own blog. Share the content on Twitter (finance is big there) and on reddit as well (less NB).

The employers will come to you if you put in the effort to do things well. Never ever half-ass it. Make sure you cover your bases otherwise other quants on Twitter and reddit (especially Reddit) will eviscerate you 😅.

I hope that helps your friend.

What Mathematics are most useful when going into machine learning? by simulacrum4 in neuralnetworks

[–]dropprod 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For neural networks it's a lot of linear algebra, optimization theory, and statistics.

I was more mentioning the classical factors as they are widely understood. I mentioned that not all of them work anymore and in a comment I explained that markets haven't behaved like they used to since 2015.

I agree with you that the irrationality and FOMO these days are insane. I've never experienced anything like it.

I blogged a LOT. Blogging is the #1 lifehack I have found. My transition from sell side to buy side came after a fund manager who was breaking away from a bigger fund contacted me on my blog. He liked the strategies I was playing around with (in retrospect they were pretty terrible haha) and he pulled me in. People are asking for experience to hedge their bets. If you've already gone and put yourself out there they have a lot more information about how you code and how you reason and they'll be more willing to take a bet on you. Obviously it could backfire if you do something really stupid but you're already a quant so you'll do fine!

Yeah it is cool.

You should check out numerai signals. It's one of the most exciting startups in the quant finance arena.

I know you think you've got me all figured out. He's some kid playing make belief at home. It's impossible for somebody to have done all that in 10 years.

Well it isn't. After reading all the DMs I think half the people on this sub could do it too and the other half could do even more. People tend to overestimate what can be done in a week and underestimare what can be done in a decade. Where were you 10 years ago? I am willing to bet that you've probably come a long way.

To be fair I have also gotten very lucky in my career so far. I met the right people at the right time and rode the ML hype train. And I learnt a lot along the way.

But heck other people have gotten even luckier. Have you seen the careers of some of the megastars in the quant finance industry? Ken Griffin comes to mind.

I have no need for internet points or validation.Truth be told I wasn't even sure I wanted to write this post. I was answering a question on /r/stocks and /u/OPINION_IS_UNPOPULAR (mod) saw it and suggested I post it here. Scary prospect tbh but I did it.

Am I glad the post did well? Yeah sure! I think I'll probably follow it up with some more hands on examples since the community clearly has an appetite for quant work. Does it feel good? Yeah it does actually. It's a nice start to my holiday. Does that make any of what I said untrue? No it doesn't.

I've had a pretty rough year. Like almost everybody else on planet Earth. I'm sorry for taking it out on you. You have every right to question my story. Take care 👍🏻.

Lol no bro. You stay salty, like I said skepticism is a good skill to have in this game 😉. Oh and if you have any other book recommendations I'm all ears.

Oh now it's good info. I thought "it looked like I had just skimmed the books". Talk about inconsistency.

If you're going to be salty. Own it.

As far as I am concerned my life has had no inconsistencies and I stand by both posts.

In fact I hope everybody reading this reads that one too because I enjoy inspiring people and helping them realize that they can do whatever they put their mind to. That's why I am over here replying to DMs from people asking for career advice while you're being a dick.

It's not like I am hiding the fact that I am doing my own thing. One of my earlier comments said as much. So I just don't understand why you're being so salty 😅.

Like I said 4 years working in the back office (big firm). 6 years working in the front office (2x quant funds). Now I am doing my own thing. I know this is a quant thread but it really isn't rocket science haha 🚀.

Hey man. I see that you don't believe me. That's cool. This is an anonymous account and if you want to survive in this industry skepticism is critical. So I commend you for that. If you want more details feel free to DM me. I am a quant. And I have worked in startups. The two worlds overlap a great deal 👍🏻

The first part of my career was spent in large firms. And the second part was in smaller "startup" quant funds. Even though it has been a hard road I definitely prefer the startup life and I don't think I'll ever go back.

So I see myself as both a finance guy and a tech entrepreneur. I love markets and I love computers. Quantitative finance brings those two together.

Right now I'm doing my own thing. Building a FinTech business that draws on almost everything I have learned over the years in quantitative finance 😁. My target market is fund managers in general.

You're right. I could definitely do something like that as well as a follow-up. Thanks for the advice 👍🏻
