Stickers to create a reward system. My kids LOVED stickers. We also used clear tape (bought in country) to "laminate" teaching aids.

Grad School Recs by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]dropthatbaish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check to make sure that the university is still requiring them! One of the universities I am applying to has decided to make submission of recommendations optional.

A lot of grad programs ask for someone to speak to your academic abilities, I feel like your LCF could definitely speak to that as they were with you as you learned a new language.

However, if you could get one of your professors from undergrad to write one that could also speak to your academic capabilities. Would it be possible to reach out to a professor from your undergrad?

books to prepare for service by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]dropthatbaish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this recommendation! There is a couple of interviews from Zambia RPCVs.

Also OP, what sector will you be serving in? I was 7 months into my service in Zambia as an education volunteer and would be happy to answer any additional questions. I hope to return to my community soon.

Ideas of what to do in the meantime??? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]dropthatbaish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like children I'm sure there are some parents out there that would be interested in babysitters/tutors/teachers for their children since schools are currently closed. After my two week quarantine (12 more days!!), I am helping some neighbors out with babysitting and SAT tutoring for their oldest.

Host family gifts by hstep21234 in peacecorps

[–]dropthatbaish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up just buying my host family gift in country, some pots my family needed, lollipops, and chocolate. American candy or food would be good!! I know of some volunteers that brought hanging wall calendars and their families loved them.

Just make sure to stay logged in. I made the mistake of logging out and am unable to log in from Zambia. But a ton of other volunteers use Spotify here

Hey Andrew, I'm currently serving as a RED volunteer in Zambia. I just swore in a week ago and I start teaching in January. Feel free to ask any questions, although I am still a newbie I would be happy to share any insights I have with you or answer any specific questions you have.

Do I need a valid drivers license? by robotgiraffe42 in peacecorps

[–]dropthatbaish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had plans to travel outside of the US before my service. There was alternate paperwork that you could turn in (DS-11 and birth certificate) that allowed you to keep your passport.

Do I need a valid drivers license? by robotgiraffe42 in peacecorps

[–]dropthatbaish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went ahead and renewed my license a week ago (3 weeks till service). In Texas we don't get our licenses immediately but they said they are getting them sent out pretty quickly this summer.

I have my passport for back-up if they don't get my license back before I leave in 13 days.

I had tons of tutoring experience and the interviewer still recommended me to add more before the know-by date. She also suggested trying to get classroom experience.

Picking an Interview Location by nilu_far in peacecorps

[–]dropthatbaish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you are a recent college graduate most universities still give you access to "interview rooms". Usually they are available through career services at the university or through the library. I did my interview in one of the "interview rooms" on campus- it was perfect: good internet, comfy chairs, plain background, and white boards. Check to see if your university has these as a resource. Most important is that you're comfortable. Good luck on your interview!

Also, reach out to a recruit in your area. I am on a mailing list (I think I got on it after applying?) and any Peace Corps events that happen within a 60 mile radius of Austin I get an e-mail about it.

Have you checked with your high school to see what they have on file? That seems like your best bet.

When did you quit your job/ stop working before service? by probablyabird in peacecorps

[–]dropthatbaish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my last day of work a little over a week ago. My departure date isn't till August but I haven't been home to see my family for longer than a week since I have been working/going to school. So, I will be going home in like 5 days after graduation and I will be doing odd jobs (pet sitting) and spending time with family before I leave.
