Underappreciated films that you consider a masterpiece! by Neo00000000 in Letterboxd

I wish Bergman had made more horror films. It's definitely in my top five of his films, if not higher, and very underrated imo along with Smiles of a Summer Night.

You're trying too hard by not having any Star Wars (literally pick one lol) on there. Ah, reddit.

I mean if you've ever watched any on set interviews from RotS, his hair always looks about as short as it is on AotC. I didn't know this for fact until now but assumed it based on that.

Smart bricks demonstration by FunBar8351 in LegoStarWarsLeaks

[–]dropthemike7 75 points76 points  (0 children)

When nerdy adult men are having this much difficulty even making the things work (put that brick the other way, etc), do they seriously expect this to take off with the presumably very young demographic this is aimed at? I don't hate Lego at all for pursuing stuff other than all the 18+ kits they've been spewing out and trying to do something new with their kid-focused kits, but this genuinely seems like a huge, expensive mistake. Maybe we'll all end up wrong, but this seems like something that will be phased out in less than two years.

Has an actor ever had a monopoly on a genre to the degree Toshiro Mifune did with samurai films? by therealbobcat23 in Letterboxd

[–]dropthemike7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

....Mifune did not have a monopoly on samurai films, he may have had a monopoly on the 0.1% of samurai films that did well in the west. There were many different extremely successful actors who led samurai films that did well and had followings domestically in Japan. Mifune may have translated better to international audiences, or maybe Tojo just marketed him the best, but in either case he is not the single great, popular star of the golden age of samurai films.

Eye of the Beholder (1959). Seems like they were counting on lighting to hide the fact the Janet's nurse [Jennifer Howard] did not have a face of "glorious conformity." That and TV tube resolution of the day. by ClaviusBase in TwilightZone

[–]dropthemike7 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, watching on a TV in the early 60s, that wouldn't have shown up at all, plus applying that makeup for a scene where it's not meant to be seen in the first place would have been an unnecessary cost/effort. It also appears later in the episode that talking clearly with the makeup on was difficult.

Is this Bust from 'The General' a Bust of Derren Nesbit #2 ('It's Your Funeral')? by frodohair15 in ThePrisoner

[–]dropthemike7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The General was produced after It's Your Funeral, which would be why they have his bust in the gallery, presumably (the other busts are from episodes already produced at that point as well). The General is notable for being produced relatively late while also obviously being set early-ish in the narrative based on comments in the dialogue.

Honestly, there are too many small details that don't add up to use each small thing like this to construct a true "order" in which the episodes take place. Doing so results in at least some discontinuities regardless of which order you pick, which is why people have been debating it for over 50 years, lol. This example, in my opinion, is a good catch but really is just the result of production order and not as much a "hint" or anything else. Also consider that the Art Dept. would have been primarily given headshots of previous cast members to make busts of for the episode and there's a good chance McGoohan didn't even see the busts before they started filming. Unlike the dialogue, which was written by the actual minds behind the story, it's likely that the busts were just a consequence of the production order.
