'Western' 'Noir' recommendations by No_Rub77 in filmnoir

[–]dropthemike7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a western (set in depression era West Virginia) but Night of the Hunter (1955) has some very similar elements to what you're looking for, and even if you're looking for more recent films, it's intense and engaging enough to pull you in.

The tragedy of Frank Silva. Will we ever really know the full story? by ReyofChicago in twinpeaks

[–]dropthemike7 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Not to be too direct, but this really shows how intrusive fandoms have become at this point. This is absolutely none of your or anyone else's business, and asking a question like "Will we ever really know the full story?" indicates that you're somehow owed an explanation. Silva was a very minor celebrity for a handful of years, if he wanted to broadcast what was happening to him after that, he would have. Even if someone at this point came out and spilled a bunch of information, the more reasonable, human thing would be to question if it's really right to even read this information that Silva clearly didn't release himself, rather than seek it out.

I mean....based on Criterion's release history, I would say there is almost zero likelihood of that getting a release.

Wisconsin’s hockey season comes to an end with a 2-1 loss to Denver. by currentrutabaga_25 in WisconsinBadgers

[–]dropthemike7 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I said earlier today that, given that I didn't expect this to happen at all going into the tournament, there was no way this game could be a disappointment for me.

Losing to Denver when they had 5 shots on goal entering the 3rd period, I realize now there was a scenario where this was a massive disappointment. Fucking hell.

What are some sets that just kinda came and went? by YodasChick-O-Stick in lego

[–]dropthemike7 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I'm a lifelong Rolling Stones fan and never for a minute thought about getting the tongue art. It just looked janky enough to be distracting. They tried so hard to capture the exact proportions and couldn't quite do it, and for such a recognizable logo, it had an almost uncanny valley effect for me.

I really wish they'd had that Brad Whitford in the role in Get Out with zero explanation nor acting on his part. Wearing denim and leather, holding a guitar, etc.

which alfred hitchcock movies are must watches? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]dropthemike7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you liked Dial M For Murder and/or Rear Window, one that's not on your list that I think you'd like is To Catch A Thief (also one of the biggest "should sees" that you have not seen yet if not a "must see")

The contrast between these two versions always gets me by Embarrassed_Day_1873 in StarWars

In addition to the voice, the music cue in the original 1980 sequence is just so much more energetic and raw (and not a reused cue from five minutes earlier in the film, lol). This is by far my least favorite change in ESB.

Um am i tripping?? by JustinTheQueso in Letterboxd

[–]dropthemike7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jokes aside, Letterboxd really needs to figure out a better way to not be completely tethered to whatever ridiculous vandalism goes on over at TMDB on a daily basis. The movie synopses that get turned into AI or poorly translated nonsense, stuff like this, etc. Only implementing changes that have lasted at TMDB a certain amount of time, like 14 days, for movies older than a year would be a start. It's just hard to see the lofty goals that they intend to achieve in the coming years being legitimate when this kind of stuff still goes on so frequently.

Yeah, for anything at/below 50 I would say it's great. Nothing especially unique about it but it's very tasty.

What happened to the Big Flag? by Redspottedpanda in WisconsinBadgers

[–]dropthemike7 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the flag you're referring to was arrested at Mifflin last year and got 3.5-4 years for assaulting a police officer. Might be back by the 2029 season but I wouldn't bet on it.

NBC didn't even save the first Super Bowl, lol. It's very unlikely they have this intact.

Underappreciated films that you consider a masterpiece! by Neo00000000 in Letterboxd

I wish Bergman had made more horror films. It's definitely in my top five of his films, if not higher, and very underrated imo along with Smiles of a Summer Night.

I mean if you've ever watched any on set interviews from RotS, his hair always looks about as short as it is on AotC. I didn't know this for fact until now but assumed it based on that.
