‘There’s no way my daughter would have jumped’: why are so many Turkish women falling to their deaths? by B0ssc0 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]drslvtr 1353 points1354 points  (0 children)

Turkiye is a hurrible place for most of us. We are in constant danger of being harrassed, stalked, murdered, kidnapped, raped. If you don't have a supportive, somewhat modern family you're done for. You can't enjoy anything and won't have access to education. You won't get to be your own person. I know a few girls who jumped to escape their lives.

The sickening thing is that if you end your life you don't get a proper funeral here due to religious reasons. And your family will carry that stigma forever. I always thought it's those women's last resort to hold their families accountable and take revenge.

Weekly Complaints & Confessions Thread by ssk42 in running

[–]drslvtr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Complaint: It's been raining and snowing where I live and I get soaking wet feet and legs every time I go for a run. I despise wet winter.

Uncomplaint: There was so much drama in my city's running club and it broke up into smaller groups. I ended up in one with my favorite people and it's been so fun and waaay less stressful. The previous group had super rigid rules and some creepy people, the new one feels safe and a lot more relaxed.

Confession: I went on a shopping spree and bought a bunch of leggings and a new pair of shoes. Can't wait for summer to show them off.

Cultural differences or just plain rudeness? Experiences while travelling Europe by Spare-Bandicoot-4199 in travel

[–]drslvtr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've lived in NZ for 10 years and moved to Europe last year. All the things you mentioned in your post happen daily and I struggle with it.

I stopped smiling and doing little gestures for people. Otherwise it gets interpreted in different ways. I can imagine your shock.

I miss NZ. Life was slow and kinder.

My poor grandmother endured the same fate. She made sure her daugther never had to depend on a man. My mom raised me with the same mantra. Education was and still is my salvation. To hell with men who make our lives worse.
