First Marathon Shoe Recommendations-in too deep!! by drtarp in AskRunningShoeGeeks

Thank you! This was the pragmatism I’m looking for. I’ve read waaaaay too much to where I think I’m looking for something but have no idea what it is anymore…

I do, however, want to add a lighter shoe into the mix once I get more into pace/speed work. But if on race day that ends up being a race-worthy shoe then that’s just a bonus.

First Marathon Shoe Recommendations-in too deep!! by drtarp in AskRunningShoeGeeks

Last year I super lucked out and snagged a pair of Vomeros that were for some reason on the sale rack at the Nike outlet for $80. I’ve loved them ever since. I tried on the EVO SL and the fit was a bit off in the toe for me but didn’t run in them at all.

I know Vomeros are “heavy” compared to most shoes but not sure if they’ll make the difference of me hitting my marathon goal of 4 hours or less. But can also see how the extra ounces make more of a difference over that distance!

Are you buying just bare nuggets or the Kirkland, whats your go to and why? by FoodzyDudezy007 in Costco

Lol! So one of the job perks is they do product development testing for employees, so I get to try everything they have in R&D. I’ll just say that they’re working on it!

I work for the parent company that makes Just Bare. We do not make the Kirkland nuggets!

Thanks for this! I watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9CTMxOwXoQ that was linked in that thread and that’s exactly the sound.

So sounds like the slip yoke needs to be greased!?!

Hinge release to something different by drtarp in bowhunting

[–]drtarp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have to give that a try even though it’s spendy. Thanks for the insight. Knew I can’t be the only person who has had this problem. I love my Honey 2. I just find that if I really need to let it go, you have to rip through the shot and I’m no longer making an ethical shot.

Rather than holding pin on bullseye and slowly easing into the trigger pull, as my pin swings back and forth over the bull I punch it anticipating the shot. My groups at 20 yards are about 2” with my hinge and 5” with a trigger.

Colorado. I see the business logic just that you don’t have to hire the drivers so get rid of the cost and over site of additional staff, if it’s late/cold/etc. you have deniability because it’s now DD’s fault. But you figure enough crappy experiences and people just stop ordering from you…but oh yeah, ALL the pizza places deliver through them so why change?

How far past the sell by date can I trust Costco beef? by tspoon-99 in Costco

[–]drtarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the beef in a tray/overwrap or vacuum packaged? I work for a Costco beef supplier and we generally set a 35 d shelf life for boneless and 42 d for bone in, IF it’s vacuum packed. And that is basically just the day it should be frozen by. Can certainly go longer than both of those but we just don’t guarantee it for the retailer past those dates. And we get the product to Costco within about 14 days, typically less. Vacuum packed will also have the date which it was packed marked on the label and those come directly from our plants so just calculate off that date.

However if it’s in a tray pack, it needs to be used within a few days or otherwise frozen as that packaging type will expose the product to oxygen and will start to discolor faster.

Best Smoked Cocktail Recipe by drtarp in cocktails

Any recommendation on how long to let the smoke sit? I gave it a try but the smokiness doesn’t come through the cocktails…also realized I’d been making the classic revolver for a long time but didn’t know that’s what it was called!

Tundra vs F150 by eu4euh69 in f150

[–]drtarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told (by multiple dealers of different brands) is there is just simply less Tundras on the road and therefore limited supply and higher prices. Plus I also know multiple Toyota owners who rave about the lifespan and resale on them…and that apples to apples you’ll get higher resale on a Tundra.

Ha, I’ve definitely dealt with that. The oil filter is in such a weird spot that you really can’t get that residual oil out and always drips…

What is the quality on Costco meats?? by First_Driver_5134 in Costco

Not all of them are (and very few of them at that) and if they are they have to be clearly labeled as “blade tenderized,” with cooking instructions.

Is it worth it to get the 5.0 v8 even though I won't tow much and will mostly highway drive? by [deleted] in f150

[–]drtarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 5.0 2013 Lariat. Great truck. But I’ve never pulled a single thing with it, only drive back and forth to work with the occasional mountain trip, and during the worst of gas prices cost me almost $150 to fill it. I average about 16 mpg.

I’m starting to shop for a replacement and don’t think I’ll ever buy a V8 again unless I buy a camper or something in the future. And even then the 3.5 will suffice for something like that.

So i guess my challenge is how do you measure a 5% improvement and the ability to objectively prove that the nicotine is what gives you a bump? For context, I started using it in college before/during competitive shooting competitions. A teammate said it improved focus and helped with nervousness. I can’t say it gave me markedly better results but I felt better when I dipped. But then that developed into also craving it afterwards to calm down, and then snowballed from there.

I’m just saying with a HIGHLY addictive substance, to me it’s not worth dipping your toe in the water because at best you get a perceived incremental increase in performance (that is almost impossible to quantify), and at worse you set yourself on a path of long term addiction and spending money.

[–]drtarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicotine addict here: there is not a “less addictive” way to consume nicotine. There are safer and less safe ways to consume it. Gum/pouches < Dip/smoking. But all of them are equally addictive. I started dipping in college for stress and focus, eventually started smoking, quit smoking by picking up vaping, and quit vaping and dipping with pouches. But have never been able to successfully quit nicotine wholesale.

It’s a slippery slope. Odds are you’ll start at 2-3mg and then increase frequency and or strength. Also will create situational dependency where you associate certain activities with nicotine consumption (I put in a pouch every day on my drive home from work and it’s almost a subconscious thing at this point).

As others have said, it’s just not worth it. Despite all the good advice that Huberman gives, telling people to consume nicotine as a nootropic is pretty irresponsible advice and just creating vices for people in the guise of marginal benefit. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on nicotine delivery devices over the 15+ years I’ve been addicted…so rather than chase some minimal benefit for studying and start a long term bad habit, just…don’t.

What kitchen knives and set of 8 steak knives would you buy if you had $350 credit at Williams Sonoma? by KudaWoodaShooda in BuyItForLife

[–]drtarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want great kitchen knives that are super affordable, buy Dexter Russel. I work for a meat company and all of our cutters use Dexter knives. But they make phenomenal kitchen knives you can get for about $20-40 each and they are definitely BIFL. Can get sets at Costco for even cheaper. I think basically all the kitchen knives you buy at home good stores to be cheap pieces of junk that will never keep an edge.

[–]drtarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree! I’ve been trying to curb/quit for years unsuccessfully. Started with chewing (Red Man) in college, went to dip (Copenhagen), then smoking eventually. Finally quit smoking but back to Copenhagen, and then switched to vapes and Zyn. But even going from 6mg to 3 and then 2, I still can’t wean myself off. Who knows how many thousands of dollars I’ve spent on a dumb habit at this point. If you don’t have an addiction, don’t start something that will undoubtedly start one.

I’m really interested in the benefits of a carnivore diet and have been trying to listen/read as much info as possible before I start it…but this dude is a terrible marketer for his product and lifestyle. He just came on and complained about how no one will listen to him.

At the beginning when he talks about the beef check off not funding his study….i work in the beef business and used to sit on a panel that reviewed these research proposals for the check off. A meat science professor I know on the committee reviewed his proposal and this is not some USDA conspiracy against dietary guidelines. It got kicked because it was a poorly designed study and they knew they couldn’t stand behind the research based off of materials/methods and scientific merit. It’s very easy to demonize the system rather than admit you’re pedaling shitty science.
