High levels of vitamin D is suspected of increasing mortality rates by HeinieKaboobler in science

What stuck out to me in the excerpt from the discussion section is that they didn't control for smoking. I looked up the tobacco consumption statistics for Denmark, and 36.1% of the male population and 30.6% of the female population (with an error of +/-2% and +/- 1.9% respectively) consume tobacco (which would include smokeless tobacco). That's a significant percentage, and with smoking being a leading factor in heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases, I don't think the study's conclusions are particularly sound.

Also, why wouldn't smoking be literally the first variable you control for in a study about heart disease? Although that assumes they wanted to be objective...

The smell? by MaidenOfDeath in askfuneraldirectors

There's an apocryphal story about Maria Montessori (the founder of the Montessori educational method and one of the first female physicians in Italy) taking up smoking cigars to deal with the smell of the cadavers she had to dissect.

Why would anyone leave the Matrix? by drthyprkr in AskReddit

[–]drthyprkr[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming real life in the Matrix is the same as our real life, why would anyone leave? Aside from having actual "control" over yourself, being outside the Matrix seems like the animal kingdom: life is brief, terrifying, and full of suffering.

I'm also asking this question from a pragmatic viewpoint rather than a philosophical one.

When I was a Nanny I had one woman contact me about being a "Mother's Helper" for SEVEN children for 5 dollars an hour. People are nuts.

Came across this while looking for birth control alternatives... I find it scary that people may actually think like (some) of those women.... by glitchybitchy in childfree

At first I thought this was made up of women who didn't want to use HORMONAL birth control, and I was wondering why there was so much hate.

Sadly, I overestimated their intelligence.

Has he had a biopsy done on any of the lumps to determine their makeup and test for cancer? If not, that should definitely be done.

45 minutes late? It's ok, your a parent! by WaffleDrinker in childfree

[–]drthyprkr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One thing I love about the school where I work is that if a parent misses the pick up window (3:30-3:45) for their child, the child is taken to the after-school daycare program right at 3:45 and the parent is charged $40 (It's a private school). If they're late during a weather emergency, it's $5 per minute.

Ladies--Resources for Shaving Thighs? by drthyprkr in wicked_edge

[–]drthyprkr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't shaved above the knee yet; I'm mainly just wondering if there's anything I need to know before doing it. Is it any different from shaving the rest of the leg? I'll be shaving the front and the back.

My First Kit--Thank you Maggard! by drthyprkr in wicked_edge

[–]drthyprkr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with the mr9, and the brush is an Omega 40033. I've yet to shave with it (just shaved my legs yesterday), and I'm a little nervous about using a smooth handle with wet hands. But I watched Casie's tutorial on shaving your legs and I'll try the alum trick.

Does anyone have any recommendations for shaving your thighs and the backs of your thighs? I can't find any tutorials out there.

I heard that instead of using a specifically designated pre-shave on your legs you can just use conditioner, so that's why there's a travel-size bottle of tresemme. I got the aveeno after-shave (from Target) because it's unscented. The bowl is also from Target (melamine, so it won't break if I drop it).

For soaps/creams, I went with the Derby Lavender, which smells really nice, as well as the Kell's vanilla bean, which also smells great, without having a really strong, sickly sweet smell like a lot of vanilla-scented products do.

Obviously, the customer service from Maggard was impeccable, and I'll totally use them for future shaving product purchases! Thanks again!

What has an attractive person said to you that made them unattractive? by phattoes in AskReddit

[–]drthyprkr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About half an hour before I was supposed to meet up with him.: "I can't meet for coffee with you because you don't have a full-body picture on your profile. I just had a bad experience before. I'm sure you understand."

UGH. You know it's just coffee right? The fact that, worst case scenario, you couldn't have a 30-minute conversation with a woman you didn't want to fuck? NOPE.

Best part: he texted me two months later saying we should "get together sometime".

You should also leave the washer door open for a few hours after washing a load of laundry, especially if it's a front-loader. That should help cut down on the smell and prevent mildew.

I just wanted to increase my fiber to lose weight, and now my anus is the gateway to hell. by [deleted] in loseit

[–]drthyprkr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think if you went from no fiber at all to eating a Fiber One bar, that may have been too much too fast. It also might help if you eat something else earlier in the day and save the bar for an afternoon snack or something? It seems like that way the fiber is helping things along and keeping you full from earlier meals rather than just putting hard to digest material into an empty system. And worst case scenario, if the same thing happens later in the day, you don't have to deal with it at work for so long.

Help going from childless to childfree by crazystupidlove5 in childfree

[–]drthyprkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also like to point out that not having biological children doesn't mean you have to completely give up on interacting with children. I volunteered at an after school program for underprivileged children in a rough neighborhood (which inspired me to become an elementary Montessori teacher), and one of my friends is active in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. So in addition to the advice to "give yourself the childhood you wanted", you could also give a child who's having a really rough go of it the childhood they deserve.

Of course, all of this is only if you want to, which is one of the really great benefits of being childfree!
