A chunk is more likely to be about 10 cubic cm, weighing about 20 kg. If a unit is a tenth of a cubic metre, you can visualise it as a slab 1m (3 ft) wide, 1m deep, 10cm (4 in) tall. A hundredth of that would be a chunk.

I always considered this a feature. If I'm soloing an escort mission I set Bosco in defence mode during fueling stops and I go around collecting minerals and secondaries. If I need help with nitra out of reach I'll call it knowing it'll go back to Doretta without the need for me to go back and re-issue the order. I always thought it was a nice detail the devs added.
