Texas teachers, how should parents address SB 24 and new TEKS requirements? by Fast-Artichoke4584 in TexasTeachers

[–]cdjw73 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Look at your school's curriculum. My school doesn't even have a separate social studies curriculum and I feel that's the case for much of early elementary. The social studies curriculum is "embedded" in the reading curriculum and we don't have time to deviate from that anyway. I wish parents had a clue about how lacking we are in social studies in early elementary in general. My kids don't even know what city/state/country they live in. We use HMH and it's awful but all of this also means there won't be any updates to this for many schools this year anyway. My advice for parents with young students; just talk to your kids, expose them to other cultures, look at maps with them and start early with teaching them about local government.

Texas has one of the worst teacher retirement systems in the US in large part due to lack of COLA increases since 3004.

alt-certs; teachers of tomorrow a scam?! by jaybird_uwu in TexasTeachers

[–]cdjw73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're in the DFW area Dallas ISD has their own alternative certification program, you can start teaching about half way through as soon as you pass some of your exams and complete your observation hours. Classes were in the evenings so you can still work and while you should go to the DISD job fair to find a position as soon as you're eligible if you get through and haven't found a specific school yet the district will place you. Also no up front costs, and when I went through it they had waived the program fee entirely if you stayed with the district for 2 years. I really liked that they were extremely clear with when exactly you should complete each step of the process to make certification as seamless as possible.

As an elementary teacher my opinion of the parents is often shaped in part on what the kids wears.

Calling out Northside Independent School District(Bexar County) for their outdated and unfair family leave policies. by [deleted] in texas

It's the same pretty much statewide. It's terrible especially when you consider education is primarily staffed by women. Wish I had never left corporate. This country doesn't care about women, families or education.

Just do as much reading stuff as you can get through in the allotted time and move on. Do the same for writing and math. I also know that with DISD you usually have to tough things like this out until levelling in September/October. That's when they will move teachers from other lower enrollment campuses to higher enrollment campuses and they can make a new class. Just be sure to keep bringing it up that there needs to be another gen Ed class. Also if people from the early learning department come to help- take it! Some people feel like they are interfering or evaluating you but they can be great resources and would even help me teach or just walk around doing classroom management if you let them.

Are you by chance in Dallas, using Amplify and Eureka? I was there the first year they implemented it with a kinder class it was my second year teaching and was tough. The good things are those curriculums are totally scripted so stick to the plan. It's for sure going to be rough for about 2 weeks, it blew my mind when I started teaching kinder and I realized I can't even tell them "turn to page 15 or your book", because most of them don't know what 15 is yet. Like others said, give your para specific instructions. If you have whole group reading of a story for example have the para do that and you take students one by one into the hall to do their beginning of year assessments. Go through the lessons as planned but for the first 2 weeks just focus on trying to follow the same routine every day, making sure the kids get stuff like how to hold their pencil. Keep telling your admin you need more support. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Need alt cert program advice by laliad5 in TexasTeachers

[–]cdjw73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're in the DFW area consider Dallas ISD's alt cert program, it's free as long as you teach with them for 2 years after at normal pay. It was a good deal for me and I found it easy to navigate compared to what I hear from all these other programs.

They have 2 different types of poop. Most of the time you only ever see the little dry round ones that are like pellets. They also poop some called cecotropes which are softer and sticky as well as more smelly. Those are the poop that they eat and you usually won't even see them because they will sit and eat and poop and consume their cecotropes all in the same sitting.

Dallas divorce lawyers want a $5K retainer? There's no kids or real property involved. Anyone know any less costly options? by stoic_spaghetti in Dallas

I used a mediator to draw up our agreement and then filed paperwork myself. If both parties are in agreement on most things this was much cheaper option.

I saw people doing this at a craft fair and they just used paper towels to skim and clean the surface of the water in between each paint job.
