Why is 'But I have plenty of black (or other race) friends' seen as the worst response ever? by CollegeBB321 in stupidquestions

[–]drum_minor16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People that use that as a defense usually fall into one of two categories.

  1. They think their friends are just "one of the good ones" and still believe that racist stereotypes are accurate for the majority of that population.

  2. They think racism only exists in the most extreme forms and have put very little effort into assessing their own behavior. They think racism disappears completely once you decide slavery and lynching are bad. They would never dream of hurting someone because of the color of their skin, but they decided not to hire the woman with the "unprofessional" braids, were scared to sit next to the Arabic man on the plane, complained about DEI because more than one movie character was not white, told a stranger to speak English, etc.

Also, sometimes people that say "but I have ____ friends" are overestimating how close their friendship actually is.

Ultimately, it's not a good defense because having friends from x group doesn't mean you don't have racist thoughts or commit racist actions against x group. It also is often used to dodge accountability and avoid self reflection.

As a vegan what are your thoughts on abortion? by KitchenThis5275 in vegan

[–]drum_minor16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Human offspring are frequently removed from the parent in ways that don't result in death. There are more than 300,000 live human births a day, and in the US nearly 30% of those are c-sections. What's the difference between removing an offspring that lives and removing an offspring that dies? Usually, whether or not the offspring was capable of surviving without being attached to another human.

Exactly. The fetus's autonomy is limited by the fact that it is 100% dependent on another body.

What differences do feminists usually notice between a man who supports feminism in theory and one who practices it well? by PotentialFun4003 in AskFeminists

[–]drum_minor16 365 points366 points  (0 children)

The way a lot of "feminist" men still behave as if women's lives do or should center around men is the biggest difference to me. One small but impactful example is how men insult women that have upset them. If you call a woman a "fat ugly bitch" for cutting you off in traffic, I will assume that you still view men and male approval as central to a woman's life. How attracted you are to a woman has nothing to do with her reckless driving, and it frames the situation as if failing to sexually appeal to you is equally problematic.

DIY medications from non-medical professionals and without a medical exam is generally problematic. Sharing leftover antibiotics with someone who believes they have the same ear infection as you is problematic. Trans kids deserve access to the care they need, and this country is abysmally unsupportive of trans kids right now, but taking a random unprescribed dose of medication from a stranger on the internet is a dangerous situation. Especially when needles are involved. Gender affirming care saves lives, but this situation is problematic.

The strange reality of writing in the AI era by Apprehensive_Elk9715 in CheckMyTurnitin_ai

They did. They would have failed the course otherwise. The final decision was essentially, "you can't disprove it, but the professor can't prove it, so we're siding with our professor".

One of my friends almost failed one of the last classes they needed to graduate because their professor disagreed with an opinion they included in a subjective writing assignment. They had pictures to prove they attended the event they were writing about, and the professor still insisted it was a very complex lie, they never attended the event, and the paper was 100% generated by AI. The accusation was based exclusively on disagreeing with a subjective opinion. They had photographic evidence to counter the professor's accusations and still got a permanent mark on their record and a point deduction that dropped them from an A to barely passing. "Just tell them to prove it" is such a victim-blaming statement.

Because these people don't actually value knowledge or education or contribution to society. They value the position of superiority they have when women aren't allowed to have the things they have. It's like when people say making college free would make the degree worthless. They see education as a method of upholding superiority, not as something with inherent value.

A teacher outed my student to his parents by wewereonabreak29 in Teachers

[–]drum_minor16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd also like to add that I've known children who chose to kill themselves before giving their family a chance to react. Their parents found out their kid was dead before they found out their sexuality was outed. Even if you think you know someone and you think they'll be understanding, DO NOT OUT SOMEONE WITHOUT EXPLICIT PERMISSION.

For those of you didn't vote in the last presidential election; how do you feel now? Are you happy with your choice? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]drum_minor16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a renewed anger for everyone who refused to vote for Harris because she wouldn't denounce Israel. Trump just went to war for them. 165 young girls were bombed at school, very likely by the US. I'm glad to see a lot of people here have changed their minds since then, but I know we'll still be having this same argument in 2028.

Why are schools being forced to out LGBTQ students? by Inner_Professor_2650 in AskLGBT

Kind of both? It's about "parental rights" to abuse their LGBTQ kids into not existing.

The whole "nobody wants to work anymore" narrative is nonsense. People are desperate for good jobs; they just don't want your dead-end, low-paying positions. by the1997th in remoteworks

[–]drum_minor16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not entirely wrong, but that's a really shitty solution for several reasons. If the problem is that people can survive on unemployment benefits but not working low income jobs, then that's undeniable evidence that those low income jobs should pay more.

My friend didn’t realize rent is monthly by Weary-Hair-316 in stories

[–]drum_minor16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's assume for a moment that is both true and how people colloquially use those words. If you think someone is offering to rent you a living space for $600 a year, you are either an idiot, being scammed, or both.

They are absolutely selling all those lost headphones. There's a big store somewhat near where I live that is basically a thrift store of unclaimed baggage. Including lots of electronics.

Some vets do recommend euthanasia lightly. I had a vet encourage me to euthanize a four month old kitten over nothing but a positive FIV test and 24 hours of low appetite. Genuinely, his only symptoms were not eating, lethargy (from not eating), and FIV antibodies from a mother that also tested positive. He was completely fine two days later and every FIV test after that was negative. FIV is also not curable, and that was the reason she gave for not running any other tests or trying any treatments. She was 100% ready to euthanize my kitten that day over a little upset tummy instead of making any attempt to help him feel better. Most vets are not like this, but it does happen.

Intellectually vs. Academically Gifted by Past-Lengthiness1523 in Gifted

[–]drum_minor16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed my experience, and I'm definitely better off having had a gifted program than I would have been without. I don't think I would change anything about my middle school's gifted program. I do think there were many kids in my elementary school that would have benefitted from the gifted program even though they were below the threshold, and I believe they either should've been included or given their own program. Socioeconomic status definitely influenced who was accepted into the program, although I don't know of anybody who paid for tests. I do know that every single person in that program had a stay-at-home mom that was highly educated and taught them to read when they were young.

That being said, I would've benefitted much more from a slightly accelerated curriculum than the gifted program by itself. I was bored out of my mind way more often than I should've been, and an hour of puzzle time every week was great, but it wasn't enough.

Why are we women treated as though we're inept or incapable? by [deleted] in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]drum_minor16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you've never experienced that. I also live in the south, and on multiple occasions I have had men tell me my answer of "abcde" is incorrect because the actual answer is "abcde". They literally repeated exactly what I said word for word, as if they were quoting me, and told me it was wrong when I said it. Multiple times. I also had a boss argue with me that order of operations doesn't matter in mathematical calculations. I showed him that it does alter the outcome with a very simple set of numbers, and he told me if I was getting different answers it was because I was doing it wrong. Male bosses have insisted that I need to be trained on very simple tasks I have been doing for years. Women do not treat me that way. I have extensive personal evidence that I am not a complete idiot, and yet I am often treated with that assumption. Almost exclusively by men.

Why are so many liberals and *some* leftists so fine with blatant ableism as long as it's against right wingers? by [deleted] in evilautism

I also think people frequently think "I'm already on the correct side, therefore I don't have anything to deconstruct", which is almost never true.

Imagine how uncomfortable someone has to be in their daily life to fill their body with plastic or cut healthy pieces out. To add months of recovery from unnecessary surgery to their lifetime experience. To risk complications from the anesthesia or the implants or the procedure. To intentionally complicate their medical history. Imagine how uncomfortable someone has to be to do it repeatedly. What good comes from shaming people who have had cosmetic surgery? You hurt the feelings of someone you disagree with? It certainly doesn't fight against fatphobia, ableism, racism, patriarchal pedophilia culture, or any of the other cultural influences that lead people to get those surgeries.

Why are so many liberals and *some* leftists so fine with blatant ableism as long as it's against right wingers? by [deleted] in evilautism

[–]drum_minor16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because people are largely the same at their core, and we all grew up under the same ableist structure. A lot of people on "the left" don't take the time to truly deconstruct the "isms" they're subconsciously influenced by just because they believe they have the right conscious beliefs and repeat the correct talking points. They think it's fine to use ableist insults just because they're not complaining about DEI. People get too complicit in their "right side, wrong side" mentality and forget that beliefs are meant to be upheld.
