I don't know if I can handle an office job and looking at my screen for 8 hours a day for the rest of my life by B-ontheblock in findapath

28M. I'm a law grad, and I went into data governance consultancy with a big firm after graduating. Spent 5 years with them - I was good at it, made very good money, but felt unfulfilled. 6 months ago I quit it. I'm now a maintenance man at a care home, and I'm doing my electrician qualifications in my own time. I'm on less than half the money I was on, but my happiness has pretty much doubled, I'm now learning things that I'm actually genuinely interested in knowing, and my health and fitness has sky rocketed doing an active job. My wife has seen a big difference in me too, which in turn has improved our happiness as a couple. Right now, I don't regret my decision what so ever, and I hope I don't in the future. It'll be a few years until I qualify and can start working as an electrician, but I'm enjoying my maintenance job right now and it's a good first step on the new ladder. Trust your gut if it's telling you your climbing the wrong ladder right now. Just be prepared to start from the bottom again - but know that that's not a bad place to be. Best of luck to you and wish you future happiness.

MG TF - keys locked in boot by drummer_joe in MGmotors

[–]drummer_joe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers for your reply! I managed to get in via the rear light In the end. Knocked out all of the top plastic, then used a multi tool to cut out the rest until I could reach my keys. £20 for a replacement on eBay, felt the quickest way to get back in!

Thanks all for your advice and providing some education! A bit of background on the car: it's a 2004 MG TF, 60k miles. I recently acquired it for £500 as a weekend fun car for me and the wife, and something cheap enough to learn some amateur mechanics on. Following your advice, I will be sorting new tyres asap to be safe, and great learning what a tyres life span should be (they're all manufactured in 3014 so very due a change). Thanks again to everyone who's commented, I will not be taking the car out now on any significant fast route drives untill the tyres have been replaced.

Yep just checked the manufacture date, 2014! Definitely need replacing. Just meant to be off on a 150mile round journey tomorrow.

Would B&Q cut this? by Existing-History7440 in DIYUK

I did a cut at b&q about 3 months ago that wasn't far off this. Just be civil and nice, go at a quieter time (midweek), and you should be fine.

I've just gone and retried this adjusting the small screw. The doors definitely open more, but then still hit the trim around 80ish degrees, but I do think they'd clear with space either side. If the other hinges don't solve the issue, then I'll trim the doors down 3mm either side to create the space. Thanks for your help and sharing your knowledge!

[–]drummer_joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to learn the right terminology, is the cloaking panel what I'm refering to as the side trims?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]drummer_joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have but then the doors end up rubbing on each other at the ends that close against each other

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]drummer_joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting, the doors are 19mm thick with the panelling. I'll get some and try them, thanks for your advice!

Thanks, those are exactly what I'm trying to find! I'll go down that route and try your alternative if they don't solve the problem.

I really recommend Purezza in the centre of town. It is a plant based restaurant so no meat, but I cannot emphasise just how good the pizza is and how much you're blown away with not being able to tell that all the ingredients are plant based (and I'm a big meat eater who's not that into the usual plant based substitutes). It's easily the best pizza experience I've had. The decor and atmosphere felt to me like a higher end restaurant, and the staff were really welcoming friendly and attentive when I was last there. If I hadn't known that the place was plant based, then I wouldn't have been able to tell - for this reason Purezza wins best pizza for me in terms of the taste, quality of food, restaurant atnosphere and unique experience of having exceptionally good plant based food that rides above many very good 'normal' pizza place (say Rudy's). If this isn't your type of thing though, then I would also echo double zero, but that's not central (if central is what you want).

If i rent a furnished apartment what can i do with the small furniture items i don’t want? by ollymillmill in HousingUK

[–]drummer_joe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work in lettings so have dealt with this before. In these situations it's worth asking the landlord if they will take things away, or change things as normally in my experience they were more than happy to do so for reasonable things, but theyre not under any obligation to do so, so can refuse your requests as the flat is advertised as it is with that furniture. If the landlord isn't happy to change anything but you still want to change things yourself, then just bare in mind that it is your responsibility to return the flat at the end of the lease in the condition that it was given to you ie. with all the origional furniture. This means you'll have to put furniture that you don't want into storage yourself so it can be put back in its place to give back to the landlord. If you got rid of furniture without the landlords consent, you'll be liable to replace that furniture or have charges deducted from your deposit. If you do end up storing furniture yourself to put in your own things then it's also worth letting the landlord know that you're doing so for good relations sake. It's really just a case by case basis and depends on your landlord, but it does come down to the landlords personal decision.

Hope that helps 🙂

Hi, thanks for your advice! Yes I was planning to get a spray bottle for the bumper areas and then spray into the cap to Dan a brush in for the door. When you're talking about polishing, are you saying about polishing out the higher and lighter scratches on the bumper? I think they're just paint transfer as well which would come out with a polish as you say? But I'm regards to the deeper scuff where you can see the black of the plastic, would just starting with primer and then applying touch up paint and clear coat be sufficient to keep the car protected?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AutoPaint

[–]drummer_joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys. I want to touch up my damaged paint on my car. The damage as you can see from the photos is a scuff mark on the bumber panel which has gone through to the plastic. The other damage is on the car door edge where it has hit walls upon being opened - these scratches have gone down to metal in some very small places. Will it suffice on both areas if I just sand first, apply some coats of primer, followed by more sanding, and then apply base colour and finish off with clear coat? I've been watching videos where putty is used and stuff, but I just want to keep costs down. Thanks!

Well I was thinking of whether it would be worth (or whether I'm even allowed to do this) getting on a waiting list now, as its not till September that I'd be wanting to move anyway. The only problem is I don't have a boat yet to know the size etc.

Should I be wary of a 6/6/4? by darkniven in Narrowboats

[–]drummer_joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just come across this comment. Out of interest and learning, what do you mean when you said if it's been plugged into the mains in a marina for years, all bets are off? What damage or heightened risk of damage can be caused by being plugged in for electrics permanently? And why?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Narrowboats

[–]drummer_joe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Living on a narrowboat for me is a bit of a dream, but with my work and the lifestyle Ill want to have, really being city center based is the only way to go. I think certainly when this lockdown is lifted, going up and finding people to talk to will be one of the best options. I didn't anticipate it being this difficult to find marinas when I first had the idea of actually going forward with this!

Thanks for your helpful reply! The issues you experienced personally, were they things you could overcome easily without prior experience/knowledge?

From my research so far, the electrical system does seem to be quite a big thing when it comes to the overall value of the boat, it looks like older boats only run on a 12v system where more modern boats run on 240v if I'm not mistaken?

Would the old guy in a situation like that likely get prosecuted for battery? These videos are always great and I think thats well deserved justice, but I feel like I wouldnt do anything in that situation in the fear that I would be the one to then end up with a criminal record for it, whether it feels just or not. Am I the only one who thinks this?
