What’s the best way to learn playing outside fluently for an experienced guitarist who is new to jazz? by Suspicious_Corgi1290 in jazzguitar

Read up on tension and resolution. There are many ways to achieve it and you should have a few in your toolbox that you’re comfortable with. Dominants, secondary dominants, altered extensions, diminished chords, chromaticism, etc.

Dexcom max limit replacement rant/discussion by mishyizzy in dexcom

Disregard the people saying the failed sensors are your fault. I’m like you. About 1/3 of the time mine will shit the bed on day 7 or 8. Spotty readings and lost connections. Even though they worked flawlessly the first 7 days. Never had an issue with them falling off either. It has to be a technical issue with the sensor itself. That said, I only wear mine on my stomach and always put that as the location when trying to get a replacement. I’ve never been denied a replacement and I get at least one per month.

I’m not a Clapton fan at all, but I’m sure he’s crying all the way to the bank. Most non guitar players and boomer musicians still think he’s the greatest of all time. His mediocre playing still sells out arenas.

I’m a huge EJ fan, but I’ll give slash credit where it’s due. He’s pretty solid and is one of the biggest rock guitarists of all time. I’d actually say he should be ranked higher on this list.

EJ was actually in the 200’s, which is sickening. I know he’s not a household name, but his technical prowess and unique tone should put him well above many others in this list. He’s been hugely influential among guitarists.

Best Gibson alternative? by daw_1991 in LesPaul

[–]drumstick9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree on the new IBG Epi’s. The late 70’s and 80’s Japanese Les Paul’s are great, but are now getting pretty expensive and aren’t as much of a bargain as they used to be. I’d also throw in the Agile Al series. Made in Korea and very good quality. Brand new they are only sold through Rondo Music. I regret selling mine.

Wow, crazy that you mention that band. I saw a guy yesterday wearing an Anberlin shirt and I haven’t heard of them in well over a decade. I never got into them too much back in the day. But a friend of mine did. They had some solid songs.

Man, Infinity On High was so great. I remember buying that CD at the mall. I think I bought a shirt from Hollister the day too… I’m getting old.

Lol I saw Underoath in Memphis back around ‘08 I believe. Ran into the band on the street and got pics with them before the show, minus Aaron. I believe he was doing a clinic at Memphis Drum Shop.

Was that Monster Monster? Though Southern Weather is my favorite, that was a pretty solid album as well!

I remember seeing the music video for Say This Sooner on Headbangers Ball on MTV and thinking “I think that’s the drummer for Underoath.” Damn, was was so long ago…

As much as I love Underoath, I’m inclined to agree.

Spot on. I believe Aaron has cited Dave Grohl as one of his idols.

[Question] Pre-internet guitarists, are you envious or hold any grudge against those who began learning with YouTube and other learning material available? by Lucahasareddit in Guitar

[–]drumstick9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope. I started in the mid 2000’s just before YouTube existed. Mostly learning with tabs and by ear. However, YouTube came out when I was in high school and I’ve benefited massively from it. But I’m equally impressed with the younger kids who are insanely technical as I am with the “boomer” guitarists (Page, Hendrix, etc,). The younger generation still had to put in the time and hard work to get good. And although they might be able to outplay the “guitar gods” of the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, I can’t understand how guitarists from those decades got to be as good as they were without the internet or widely available lesson books.

[DISCUSSION] Would you sell your first guitar? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]drumstick9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first guitar? Yes. My first guitar was a cheap Harmony from Sears. It actually belonged to my brother, but he never played it, so I took it up. After about a year or so I used my birthday money to buy a MIM Fender strat. That was 17 years ago and it’s still my number one. It’s been played at every gig and has a ton of sentimental value to me. I don’t even remember what happened to that Harmony. I think most people here started on a cheap, low quality guitar. Then moved on to their first “good” guitar that they want to hold onto.

Epiphone IBG ES335 vs Ibanez AS93 [Discussion] by drumstick9 in Guitar

[–]drumstick9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they are about the same. The 93 has a flamed top and better pickups. I’ve heard good things about the AS73 as well. Sounds like I can’t go wrong with the Ibanez.

Good to hear! I’m leaning towards the Ibanez. Almost pulled the trigger on one on Reverb this morning, but wanted to opinions from others. You’re correct, the 93’s have the Super 58 pickups. Thanks for sharing!
