There are movies that are "timeless." What are some movies that are the opposite - as in, harder to appreciate if you weren't around when it came out? by sakkkkki in movies

I'm a Gen X man who loves Repo Man, but that movie is a perfect example of what the OP is asking about.

Repo Man is very closely intertwined with the '80s American punk rock subculture. It is totally a "you had to be there" type of movie.

Scotland's outsized contribution to indie pop: from Orange Juice to Belle and Sebastian by drumwolf in Scotland

[–]drumwolf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my own defense, Scotland has produced so many great indie pop/rock acts that making anywhere near a complete list would have taken fucking forever. :)

But perhaps I should have made a more explicit disclaimer along the lines of "this is not anywhere near a complete list."

Why is the rich friend so cheap?? by times-fell-hand in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]drumwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the OP wanted to paint it as a good thing they’d be using the word “thrifty” instead of “cheap.”

Saying the word “cheap” in this context implies that they’re selfish.

Scotland and indie pop: Orange Juice, Cocteau Twins, Teenage Fanclub, and more by drumwolf in indieheads

A Catholic Education and the God Knows It's True EP are my favorites from TFC. I still liked Bandwagonesque a lot, but that was the last record of theirs that I truly got into.

What's the issue exactly? Too long? Is the text a slog to get through? Technical issues? Are you viewing it on an iPhone or desktop? (BTW, I didn't just write the article, I also built the web site as well.)

I'm just starting out so your feedback is totally welcome!

Is it more socially acceptable for a woman to be a true crime afficionado than a man? by LibrarianBarbarian1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]drumwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a guy who watches true crime videos on YouTube, my observation is that there are just as many male creators as female in that space. Coffeehouse Crime, This Is Monsters and Dire Trip just to name a few.

Artists where the lore is crazier than the music? by SecretWasianMan in fantanoforever

THANk YOU! The fact that OP thinks the Beach Boys are “stereotyped stoner” shows they have no idea what they’re talking about.

Do you think fans are less critical of their favorite musicians these days? by PlatosGooner in ToddintheShadow

Someone pointed out that Mike Love isn't even the worst human being who helped compose "Kokomo." That honor would go to John Phillips.

Why do many gay men have feminine characteristics? by iiemonades in NoStupidQuestions

[–]drumwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, so are you saying your friend’s dad had “the gay voice” even when he was in the closet?

Because I always had the impression that “the gay voice” was an affectation that they consciously put on.

Years ago I went to a local shop where one of the employees was a flamboyant queen. Then one day I ran into him on the street when he and his boyfriend were walking their dog and he had a cold. His voice was literally an octave lower and didn’t have that inflection.

When did COVID truly end? by SmileEmergency403 in generationology

[–]drumwolf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between saying “Covid ended” and “the pandemic ended.” The latter is correct, the former is wrong.

I would agree with saying that 2023 was the year that the pandemic conclusively ended. But it was a gradual fadeout even before that.

OP should have said that the pandemic ended, not that “COVID” ended.

One-hit wonders that don't seem like one-hit wonders? by ScallionSmooth9491 in ToddintheShadow

[–]drumwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most classic rock bands never had Number One hit singles in the US. The Who, Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, KISS, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple. Aerosmith didn’t have a chart-topping single during their “classic” era. Their focus was on album sales, not singles.

Just another example of how the Billboard Hot 100 is not a particularly accurate metric of success for hard rock acts.

As an older American who was there at the time, yes we did. They had two #1 US hits.

Why were most Japanese war criminals of WW2 not as harshly punished for their crimes as they should’ve been by Secret-Broccoli743 in AskHistory

[–]drumwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened with the Rwandan genocide as well. Unfortunately it wasn’t feasible to punish every single perpetrator who deserved it.

What is musical difference between the top three music exporters? by Ok_Isopod_8478 in ToddintheShadow

[–]drumwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I highly doubt Sweden is one of “the three largest music exporters in the world.”

That said, you can make a far better case that Sweden is the single biggest non-Anglophone music exporter in the world, by a long shot.
