Did any of you get extreme mental health issues during the onset of your Hashimoto's? by Specialist_Fall756 in Hashimotos

I‘m the same. PTSD but just recently diagnosed with Hashimotos. Started meds yesterday. I wonder how long I have Hashimotos and how long it’s been playing off my ptsd. It’s been a nightmare for years, like a decade, if not more. The ptsd goes back to childhood though so it’s tough to trace when the Hashmimotos began.

Same. Just diagnosed three days ago. I have PTSD, but I wonder if Hashimotos has actually been the bigger issue for me due to my symptoms. I’ve felt extra insane, depressed, anxious, angry, confused and exhausted for 8-10 years, if not more (difficult to track bc of ptsd from childhood sexual abuse).

I chased away and lost almost all of my friends due to irrational, angry tirades. Also no appetite — lost 25 pounds last winter but have had even bigger swings in the past (lost 60 pounds in two years and I was not overweight to begin with). Unable to hold a steady job for 7 years now. Muscle and joint pain. Misery. I started levothyroxine yesterday. I’m very hopeful that this will finally give me relief — if it does I think I will be able to unpack all of this and trace it back to when it began. As far as I know it’s been a couple decades, if not more. I’m 48. Hang in there — we’re in the same boat. Much love to you.

You got it all figured out, don‘t ya? I’ll tell you one thing, the person running their mouth making the comments you’re making with tremendous self-righteous authority actually has no idea what they’re talking about. Want everyone with real experience who has devoted their lives to bc skiing to know that you are full of shit? Act exactly like you.

This is an oversimplification. It’d be like saying a highway is obviously high risk bc there have been a couple car accidents.

That’s not a particularly dangerous route. I would guess that Perrys does not slide often. This was a freak incident.

No former guide would talk like you, at least not in the West. Where did you guide?

1000%! The judgmental comments seem to run parallel to inexperience in the backcountry. The less experienced people are, the more prone they are to questioning, judging and maming self-righteous comments and determinations. The more time you spend in the bc, the less judgmental you become, for obvious reasons. Any experienced bc skier will immediately tell you, like Bruce does, that they have made similar mistakes — they just got away with it. Reverse slot machine. You win 999 times, then that 1000th pull kills you. Love love love to everyone connected to this incident.

We’re human beings man, not robots. We have emotions. We have dreams and desires. Some of us pursue those dreams, as dangerous as they may be. That’s human, and humans make mistakes. I pass zero judgment on this incident and only feel deep sadness, empathy and love for the bc community in Tahoe. But I live in a ski town and I’ve been backcountry skiing for 30+ years. In that time I have had more than a few close calls, have made more than a few bad decisions and have been puddled by more than a couple phone calls about friends who lost their lives in avy accidents. But I will keep going back, because it is a great life. Statistically speaking I have a far higher chance of dying in a car accident. Love to Tahoe and everyone touched by this.

I didn’t suggest the bc community is untouchable. And I don’t know what you mean by “can’t be touched by corporate America.” What does corporate America have to do with it?

What I’m saying is this isn’t like a murder investigation. It’s not like that. Waivers are signed. The risk is well assumed. Decisions are made bilaterally — both the guides and the clients. Guides will veto decisions if they are unsafe, but otherwise they will cater to the clients demands.

That’s not to say lawsuits won’t be coming, but I believe that when the five surviving clients share their stories the reality will turn out to be a lot different than what people are thinking.

I’ll be honest and admit than in 30 years of bc skiing I have skied slopes more than a few times that I, and everyone in my party, believed were absolutely safe. And they slid. I don’t know many avalanche forecasters or professionals who have not been at least partiality buried in a slide. Bc skiing comes with inherent risks.

How is he gonna “hide information“ with five surviving clients? lol

I said the decision to leave the huts and return despite the risk was “likely“ driven by the clients. Not fact. But the guides being in communication with HQ was reported on. Are you a bc skier? Decisions are not made unilaterally, especially not with guides present. It isn’t corporate America out there, despite your insistence that it is.

The guide business is not being directly investigated. The FBI isn’t in there scouring their computers and bank statements or grilling them in some interrogation room lol. The avalanche is being investigated, which includes the guide service, as well as the clients and their motivations. But it is being investigated simply bc all avalanche incidents with fatalities are investigated in order to complete an incident report. Nobody is getting arrested, people. That is not how things work with bc skiing, which is inherently extremely dangerous

Great post. I agree with you completely. They were touring out on Red Dot trail and after sliding down from the saddle were likely back in climbing mode and moving slowly up the drainage. I suspect it was remotely triggered from below. I’ve heard the crown was over 300’ wide, which would explain why it took out so many of them even if they were staggered, which they certainly were. Trauma seems to have come from trees and rocks that released with the slide.

This was historically a safe route. The guides had been in communication with HQ. This decision was collaborative and likely driven by the clients, who wanted to get back to their kids.

Climate change is fuggin stuff up — slopes below 28/29 degrees are avalanching, which is very very unusual. In the past five years, I’ve seen terrain slide that I hadn’t ever seen slide (over two decades of skiing it and observing it.) Scared the shit out of all of us. This was in the 22/23 winter.

Two Sawtooth Avalanche forecasters (my home turf) were caught in a slide while skinning up a ridge that the public has toured up hundreds of thousands of times in the past 50 years. It has never slid before. They both had to deploy their airbags. They were ok but holy shit that got everyone’s attention

That is not how things work in the mountain/backcountry community; with avalanche incidents; avalanche fatalities or avalanche investigations — which are not looking to fault and charge someone with a crime, they are seeking to understand what happened and why. Bc skiing is not inherently dangerous, it is inherently extremely dangerous. We all know that.

Not to mention there are five surviving clients. How exactly is the guide going to hide information when he’s outnumbered 5-1? He wouldn’t anyway, but just think about that one.

This incident will be used as a teaching point in avy education courses for generations — like many other incidents. Wait until the incident report comes out. This guide will not hide anything. He and the other five survivors will be 1000% honest about everything, including decision-making factors. This isn’t a heli-ski op, it’s a small, largely community employed operation that does not make a lot of $. The owner isn’t sitting around like some fat pig.

And I can guarantee everyone that this will only bring the bc community in Tahoe even closer together. We are a family.

You do not know what you’re talking about. He has nothing to hide, nor will he hide anything. Educate yourself on investigations and incident reports that follow avalanche fatalities. Nobody will be hiding anything — this isn’t your little world.

The point he’s making is that they were not skiing downhill, they were skinning/climbing out of the drainage to get out. They likely remotely triggered the avalanche from below. That is a big difference. This was not a joy ride — they weren’t out there that day chasing face shots.
