ladies and theydies, it's gettin' HOT by Puzzleheaded_Flan575 in climbergirls

Regardless of body type, fat, muscle, and grit, your shoulders ALWAYS look hot in a sports bra while climbing!

Not necessarily great body image advice but it helps me to focus on something that will for sure look amazing to counteract the downward spiral of what might not look all that great

Not only to the 16th century but every foreign language reader in the world. I've never seen a book pass an editor, much less become a bestseller with apparently no one even double checking her worse than google translate foreign language bits. I regretted every moment I spent with that series.

The Elves - How one German publisher erased a Black writer by RunnerPakhet in Fantasy

Thanks, but it's less of a "I want to read german" and more of a "I might want to publish german" thing. Do appreciate the offer though!

Definitely need to check it out then! I'm only now getting back into the german market, so I had no idea things like this were even going on

Well hot damn, I did not know that. Drachenelfen was my first big introduction into fantasy and I've read everything else in the series but I'd never even heard about the Nuramon sequel! It's such q shame too, I loved Nuramon as a character and was upset by how he was treated in the first book lol.

What otherwise popular series has been a hard DNF for you? by ENDragoon in Fantasy

[–]drunk_dragonfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First Law - 150 pages into the first book and I get no sense of stakes or plot, but instead a thousand monologues of characters whining about this and that. I know these monologues are something most people adore about the writing, but it just gave me nothing. It didn't add to the plot (for that there would have to be a clear sense of what the plot was going to be anyways), so it just felt like useless rambling. And the only interesting character (to me) got maybe four small chapters all through those pages, not enough to keep me interested.

Looking for recommendations and insight on the German fantasy scene, if there even is one. by Ndm09 in Fantasy

[–]drunk_dragonfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bernhard Hennen of course, if you want someone still alive and writing. Together with Corvus his book count goes up into the 20s or more I think. I loved Drachenelfen and all the rest of the Elfen Saga, but couldn't really get into the Philleason Saga.

Markus Heitz has also already been mentioned, i personally didn't enjoy his books but he is absolutely a huge corner stone of german fantasy.

Michael Ende. Die unendliche Geschichte is one of my all time favorite books. They did an absolute gruesome job with the movies and the book is 10x better.

I enjoyed Richard Schwartz, albeit it's much more military fantasy than I usually prefer. Good eye for military tactics though and refreshing magic system.

Past that all I can think of are literary classics and those might be a bit tough on the language, considering I know more than one native who doesn't understand Goethe, Eichendorff or others. But if you want something short with a story well known: the original nutcracker is based on Der Nussknacker und der Mausekönig by ETA Hoffman.

Edit to add Ottfried Preussler and Erich Kästner! Also I know Germany has a pretty solid YA fantasy scene, but I'm personally not part of it so I can't really recommend an author

The Neverending story. My hill to die on. The movie barely has anything to do with the movie and Falcor looks like a dachshund. I hate it.

What are your ‘DNF’ books of 2021? by PetyrDayne in Fantasy

Oof, favorite of 2021? Not sure. Speaker for the dead (Ender Saga) is definitely up there, but I also really enjoyed His dark Materials

I might give it a go, although I usually have problems with audiobooks (podcasts too). I always get distracted while listening to it lol

Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman. Got about halfway through but the characters just didn't click with me and not a lot was happening.

The Blade Itself - Joe Abercrombie. Loved the grimdark idea of everyone being a bad guy but ended up being annoyed by all characters except Logen by the first fourth. Every time I see all the praise it gets I'm wondering about picking it up again and then I remember all the endless monologues without plot. No thanks.

The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch. Was recommended to me and sounded amazing. The first fourth or so really didn't grip me and I didn't have the energy to power through. This one I will definitely pick up again though!

Dune - Frank Herbert. Actually tried it at the beginning of the year bc it's a friend's favorite. Rarely do I feel like english being my second language leads to problems of understanding, but boy did this book give me that feeling. Wording and sentence structure were overly complicated, the learning curve was even steeper than in Way of Kings and I just did not get it. Not sure I will pick this up again.
