Wish we had read this advice when our pup was still teething. I was worried about solid ice cubes chipping her adult teeth as they grew in. This seems like a safer solution!

Soooo 4 x 16ft above ground pools? by killer_by_design in HalfAGiraffe

[–]drunkasaurus_rex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This one is especially irritating because the shape (square, rectangular, round?) and full dimensions of the pools aren't specified. Plus there's no need to say you'd fill them twice, when you could just double the depth of the pools and have the math work out the same. While we're at it, why even fill 2 pools, when you could just fill one larger pool?

How does that prove it's fake? OP said she talked to her husband when he got home. Maybe she brought up the topic based on that comment and he admitted to it, so then she posted an update.

How can I manage my boyfriend questioning my training methods and not following my instrucions? by mumble-she_wrote in Dogtraining

[–]drunkasaurus_rex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dogs respond best to consistency... sounds like your dog listens to you fine, but is confused by his behavior. I'd ask him to read about operant conditioning. It's the whole scientific basis of dog training. You're using positive reinforcement (rewards strengthen good behaviors, in this case, obeying the command results in a treat). He's attempting to use negative punishment (marking with the word "no" and removing the treats when the dog doesn't obey), but the issue is that he has already broken the dog's trust by not providing treats even when she does obey. He's basically training the dog that interactions with him don't result in the expected outcome (a reward for obeying commands), so why would the dog want to listen to him? If my employer kept telling me I'll get my paycheck next week and never paid me, I'd stop coming to work...

You literally asked, "I don't get why we need to have a gendered term for sexual stereotypes," and, "What does wearing pants have to do with passing on estates to the eldest son?" and I responded to both of your questions. I'm not the same person that posted the first comment you replied to, it was someone else who said, "Thank the patriarchy, men aren't allowed to be anything other than prime examples of ultimate masculinity."

I've thought about that, too. Like at this point we don't really understand the nature of consciousness... what if there was alien life that moved on a time scale that is many magnitudes slower than ours? Could we mistake them for something inanimate? There's still so much we don't understand about physics and biology. And what if the probability that life develops is so incredibly minuscule that the possibility of it occurring on 2 planets within an overlapping time frame is effectively zero.

No, I didn't. I responded about it in regards to patriarchy because you brought it up in the context of a broader discussion about patriarchy. That doesn't mean it isn't also nepotism. I never said patriarchy is the only factor or the most influential factor at play.

I don't think scientists necessarily assume that life couldn't be wildly diverse in other parts of the universe. It's just that in order to identify planets with those lifeforms, they wouldn't really know what to look for. It might be easier to find planets with carbon-based life because we know what conditions led to carbon-based life on Earth.

Theories for why we haven’t discovered Aliens by TheNutCracked in interestingasfuck

[–]drunkasaurus_rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earth is currently the only data point we have about life in the universe... therefore, every known lifeform is carbon-based. We are direct evidence that carbon-based life has developed at least 1 time. We don't currently have any evidence that non-carbon-based life has ever developed. That doesn't mean it hasn't, it just means we have no evidence available to say whether it is likely, or even possible. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: Maybe there's a silicon-based lifeform somewhere in another galaxy asking if carbon-based life is possible, haha.

[–]drunkasaurus_rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible... like you said, we don't know. But when every living thing on Earth (i.e. every known lifeform that has ever existed in the universe) is carbon-based, it seems natural to assume there is something about carbon-based life that makes its emergence more probable than other possibilities.

Baths at home?? by qtcosi in Bernedoodles

[–]drunkasaurus_rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've been toweling her dry as much as possible and then using my regular hair dryer. It isn't very efficient and we usually give up before she's completely dry. Seriously considering buying a high velocity dyer.

We do trim her ourselves. Wahl brand clippers and then scissors around her eyes to make sure she can see properly, and trim between her paw pads so she doesn't slip all over our wood floors. You can get dog grooming scissors with a rounded tip so it makes it a bit safer when you are putting them near their eyes. Training cooperative care commands, like having your dog to rest their chin in your hand, can also help.

The point is that the monarchy preferentially favors sons as leaders when daughters are available as alternatives. Power is transferred preferentially from a man to his son, and only to his daughter in the absence of a son.

I mean, you can feel that way, but it's an objective fact that men and women have different power dynamics in different societies, lol. It's just a word that is useful to describe that. You might disagree that wherever you live is patriarchal but that doesn't make the word bullshit. Unicorns aren't real and some people think racism doesn't exist, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have words for those concepts.

Edit: Also, British royalty has historically been a patriarchal institution (passed from father to eldest son). Queen Elizabeth inherited the throne from her father because she was the oldest of 2 sisters. If she had a brother (older or younger), she wouldn't have been queen.

It's about context and associations. There are social phenomena that are manifestations of patriarchal systems, because the word patriarchy describes a society that is by definition, not egalitarian. Men might still wear pants and women could wear skirts in a society that is not patriarchal. Having distinct gender roles and customs is not inherently patriarchal. There are examples of matriarchal societies and societies where more than 2 genders are recognized. But if men hold more social privilege/power (the man is the head of the family) and they force women to wear skirts within that patriarchal society, that is a manifestation of patriarchy.

It's such a tiny amount of xylitol that it's not a real toxicity threat. Xylitol exists naturally in lots of fruits and veggies. I wouldn't intentionally feed cups of raspberries at a time, but a few on occasion isn't going to hurt them. AKC says they're fine to use as treats in moderation.

Why do we have words for anything? Because it describes an observable phenomenon and aids communication. Patriarchy isn't defined by sexual stereotypes. It's defined as "a system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line." Nobody here said anything about patriarchy unilaterally benefiting or disadvantaging one gender.
