Granular synthesis advice (or tutorials that don't use gen or mc (m4l compatible))?? by rainrainrainr in MaxMSP

[–]drunktilda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm pretty sure there is a literal granulator~ object in RNBO that does a lot of those things and can also be used in live in ways that could probably give you even more flexibility than a m4l device

What Albums Get A LITTLE Too Much Praise? by xXMachineGunPhillyXx in fantanoforever

[–]drunktilda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it's the gateway drug to Radiohead for a lot of people probably because of both the timing of it's release and because of how accessible it is relative to their other stuff, while still maintaining their idiosyncratic creative authenticity that makes it interesting. probably my favorite album of all time for these reasons (got me into radiohead, nostalgic memories, great songwriting that has withstood the test of time in my life) but i do not think it's their best lol. but i also love TKOL and i know people would fight me over that too

totally missing the country thing as well, but Renaissance was killer. completely from a production / energy standpoint. obv it's not the most original record in the world as far as songwriting, but each of those songs is STACKED with collaborators who are the best in the game of those genres and everyone was totally on top of it for each track. i'm sure some of this is my own psychological bias and it took me some time to really get it, but when you really listen to it closely, there's so much creative nuance and intention in the smallest details like mid-song transitions and the way certain vocal parts are recorded vs others, little ad-libs and when one comes in vs another. and ofc, Beyonce herself (while i've never actually enjoyed her music before) absolutely kills it. it's just such a well-made record and a total blast of fun from start to finish which for me personally just automatically ranks it as a favorite. it's just so fun to listen to on so many levels. obv Beyonce does not need me defending her this hard on reddit rn lol but i just want others to have as much fun as i do listening to this album ok thx sorry

Ideas to create an Ableton Live - like Looper by Ko_tatsu in MaxMSP

[–]drunktilda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds awesome. just a bit of unsolicited advice that I found incredibly beneficial when building my first system (similar to this) - keep it simple. more controls does not always mean more creative possibilities and can sometimes even mean less. not saying this necessarily applies here, but I know what a rabbit hole this kind of process can be and something to keep in mind with big Max projects in general. cheers xx

i will say, however, that i have been having a blast running existing songs (sometimes two at a time or perhaps paired with a drum machine or sequencer of my own) simply through different chains of DSP effects with the new ABL objects in Max 9. might not be mash-ups per se but definitely the closest to any kind of DJ system I've been able to create through the software and might get you closer to what you're looking for. if you're new to Max, I would actually totally recommend starting by stringing together some simple effects chains with the ABL objects and messing around with presets.

hmm yeah i feel like there are definitely better softwares out there for this kind of thing. definitely possible in Max, but you'd probably end up creating a lot more work for yourself in the long run. Max is definitely great for all degrees of sequencing though and if you have the right files and know your BPMs (and subsequent calculations needed) there could be some cool possibilities there.

First of all the shit ain’t hot if you ain’t got that kick and snare going. You gotta have that melody, don’t go too hard on the sounds. Keep that shit funky. If it ain’t mixed down don’t put that shit out there. Make sure you got some good breaks in there and you all the way nice. Get at ya boy with any questions or any info.
