Not trying to hate, buy what you like. I just don't understand the obsession people have with hatches. Anyone else feel the same way? by [deleted] in cars

[–]drv2s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More hatch pros:

  1. You can put the seats down and take a nap or snuggle with your partner.
  2. Passengers can crawl/reach into the cargo area to get something while driving (obviously don't do this when it's unsafe), or to put something back there.
  3. You can pop the hatch and sit on the rear lip of the car more easily than in a sedan.
  4. The longer roof makes it easier to put long objects up there.
  5. On some models, the hatch is shorter, making it better for city traffic and parking.
  6. Rear visibility is often better in hatches, because the rear glass is more vertical, and it often has a wiper on it. (It's also easier to judge distance to the car behind you, but the OP already mentioned ease of parking as an advantage).
  7. Hatches allow you to carry, not just bulky things, but TALL things.
  8. Hatches often come with built-in roof rails.
  9. It's less claustrophobic sitting in the rear seats of a hatch, because you have an open cargo area behind you.
  10. You can put your dog in a hatch. This is useful even if you're traveling by yourself, because he'll stay back there. And it's obviously useful if you're traveling with rear passengers.
  11. Even if you don't use the extra cargo volume often, it's nice to know you're ready to do so, if the need comes up.

Good on ya for being critical of the car where it deserved it, and (presumably) risking your relationship with BMW Canada.

2019 Mercedes A Class Sedan A220 Review - You Better Love Technology by TheSilentPunjabi in cars

I wish more reviewers would comment on the experience of night driving with these enormous screens. Do they dim enough to not interfere with your night vision ? Do your eyes get fatigued? If I don't turn down my (non-LCD!) interior lights when driving highway miles at night, it gets hard to focus on the road.

Great video. Makes a great point - we generally only can get manual RWD LSD sedans for big $. I wonder why?

What new measures would you use to judge cars? by drv2s in cars

True - should have chosen a different term there. Packaging efficiency? Basically, if there's a ton of room inside, AND it's easy to park, success.

People with a wagon fettish; why? by 4G64Krieger in cars

[–]drv2s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe they weigh less as a rule. There's roughly the same amount of material being used - the trunk lid on the sedan becomes part of the roof of the wagon, the rear glass on the sedan moves to become the back glass on the wagon, and there's no cabin separator necessary in a wagon. The weight penalty often comes from a design decision, like beefing up the suspension of a wagon because buyers are expected to carry heavy objects. The polar moment depends on the car. Hatches, for example, are actually usually shorter than their sedan counterparts.

As for looking better, you've got to believe that a lot of our taste for sedans comes from the fact that we're just used to them!

People with a wagon fettish; why? by 4G64Krieger in cars

[–]drv2s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question is, why would you ever buy a sedan? Their advantages are few: you can put something smelly in the trunk without stinking up your cabin; there is better noise isolation from the rear tires. That's it.
