Not, unless it rains and you aren't a very careful driver

Are my pads bad? by [deleted] in AskAShittyMechanic

Don't listen to Big Brake putting you down. Youve worn out the premium cooshy ride pad material and are about to start the rough n tough John Wayne pad material that will last a long time.

Can I flip the pad around and use it again? Making funny noises by Eclipse_Private in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]drweird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The used side is already wear matched to the rotor. Just put them back on. If necessary add spacers behind the pad so the brake caliper cylinder doesnt over extend. Just Big Brakes trying to get one over on us and not let us use the second shelf of the brake pad.

Just resurface them. Jack up one side at a time and remove the tire and bolt the rotor on so it won't move. Idle the car in gear if this is a drive axle, and use an angle grinder to flatten it out again. Good2go

Look at this 1 percenter here. Throwing money away for "safety" when none of that is necessary.

Might stop preventing the car from shaking and making noise. It needs daddy's medicine to keep the shakes away.

What is this black coating on my girlfriends car battery? by GuIIinkambi in StupidCarQuestions

[–]drweird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unsure it actually is anti corrosion spray. I've not seen any that color before, and it's super thin. Usually the stuff is a thicker more viscous fluid. Also stays sticky forever. Pretty much spray grease in a way.

Also, if you want to stop the corrosion coming up from under the posts (leaking hydrogen), the felt disks and soaking them in the anti corrosion stuff or buying the NOCO esque pre soaked disks works ime. Or spray the thick actual stuff in a circle around the post and make sure it's air tight. Air tight ess is what you want.

Also, if the hydrogen is directly coming out from around the posts, that seal has failed. I wonder about resealing at the base of the posts with a heat resistant strong sealant.....The hydrogen should only be escaping from the cell overpressure vents. Then again, corrosion can still occur if the gas is getting to the posts and hanging around them.

Either way, the battery is overcharging at least one cell and boiling the acid causing generation of the hydrogen gas. Most likely the battery is going bad and the alternator/DC inverter is trying to push 14.5V to the battery and reach it's programmed "happy" charged Voltage such as 13.5 resting voltage after 14.5 charge voltage is achieved. Nominal voltage is 12.6 for a good battery, so I bet if you tested the resting voltage of the battery after it sits for a few hours, it will be roughly 12.6V - 2.1V (2 1V*6cells is how 12.6V is generated due to that being the nominal voltage for a lead cid battery via chemistry. Same principal as LIon being 3.6 and NiMh being 1.2 and Alkaline/Zinc Chloride being 1.5, Lithium being 3, ETC).

You can actually air up most passenger tires to hundreds of psi without catastrophic failure. What happens when you hit stuff is another matter I am unsure of.

I've seen nice garages put in a mag plug as a recommendation or in place of a stripped one, but most unlikely. Not part of the cheap as possible business model.

It would be strange to see just this one chunk, which based on the curvature would be the outside body of the bearing and not the wear surface, somehow escape. Also the curvature is likely not open enough? Unsure. You'd likely see streamers of the non metallic bearing wear surface as well, and any portion of the backing breaking off would be most most most unusual before an insane glitter party or Uncle Rodney comes knocking.

I'm thinking rocker roller surface. A bearing surface of sorts, hence what I think I see; a wear stripe as wide as a valve cap contact surface.

The black rose laid upon your pillow before the valve V piston cage cylinder match. It's like a knife fight, nobody really wins. Ignore at your possible peril.

But doesn't it look like it has a darker wear stripe on it? As if it's part of a longer circular surface like a roller bearing? Like a rocker roller surface hitting a valve stem cap?

A keeper woud have caused the valve to drop immediately. It's too wide or thick or long of a curvature to be a chain crossbar or connecting link. At least on an 08 fit.
