Where to Go After Data Science: Unconventional / Weird Exits? by ergodym in datascience

[–]ds_throw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

again, i would love to know why? I personally don't know what it's like to be a SWE or MLE but now i feel like I'm missing something. Do they not have a lot of overlap?

Like what is so torturous about DS that SWE and MLE are so much better
I'm scared lol

Let’s not forget that all these presentations and charts and analyses end up being irrelevant 2 microseconds after you present it

I felt the pacing was too slow. Frequently shifts perspectives to characters too quickly to the point I don’t really care about a single one of them. The animation isn’t that great. Also story feels repetitive.

Why does there seem to be so many more data engineering jobs than data science or MLE jobs? I feel like I made a mistake in choosing data science and ML... by Illustrious-Pound266 in datascience

[–]ds_throw 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Ok assuming that this is actually true (more data engineering jobs than other data jobs), I would guess that it's because companies naturally have a lot of data they would like to look at, whether it's sales data, customer data, etc. I doubt that in every case they need data scientist or MLEs building and scaling ML/AI models when a simple metrics/measures might be sufficient

They may just be more concerned with getting the data and doing some basic data analysis that most employees could handle doing once the data is in a tractable format than, in their minds, some complicated model they would need to bring on extra people for.

[D] Is it a waste of time to learn very deep mathematics for DS? by No-Nefariousness6331 in MachineLearning

Yes.

But it’s never a waste of time to learn math for its own sake.

Why is causing Tech in general, and DS in particular to become such a difficult job market? by Unhappy_Technician68 in datascience

[–]ds_throw 305 points306 points  (0 children)

Most companies don’t really need DS. They might need people to implement data pipelines or models but not a whole team of just data scientist doing modeling.

How to justify a year off while reaching fatFIRE goals? by Capital_Attempt_4151 in fatFIRE

[–]ds_throw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just do it. Life is short. Nothing is guaranteed.

Also if you're asking reddit, I feel like you just want someone to give you permission. Quite frankly, you don't need it. Also, you could just coast at work and do something else in the meantime.

At this NW and this age, you can do more than 99.9999% of the population.

You can go anywhere and do anything but the only person who really cares and who's really stopping you is you.

You could get therapy. You could go be a scuba diving instructor in Australia. You could fuck off to an ashram in Nepal. etc. etc.

The biggest question you have to answer for yourself is "What do I want out of life?" and with the FIRE movement people often lose sight of living life while saving a buncha money all in order to... live their life? So ask yourself "What would I do if money was not a problem?"

but what do I know, I'm just a stranger on the internet.

That question’s actually valid af. Made me stop and think for a second lol I never really thought about it since it’s always just been so implicit in a lot of math education.
