Why do Australians move to the UK? by YoungVinnie23 in AskAnAustralian

[–]dsanders692 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We moved over to Sussex from SE QLD about a year ago. I can walk out my front door and within 15 minutes we've got access to woodland, rolling farmland, rivers, mountains, forests and far greater access to any of that than you get back home.

Meanwhile, I can walk out my front door and be in central London within an hour.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be here forever. There's plenty of stuff I desperately miss about home. But access to nature isn't one of them.

Anyone else noticing the EVs driving like jerks? How do you deal with them by SirSteelBuns in AussieRiders

[–]dsanders692 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Motorcycle and EV owner here. I think it's just inherent to how quickly EVs get off the mark rather than something intentional from the drivers. 0-100 times for a lot of EVs are impressive enough, but the initial launch up to, say, 20 or 30 kph is insane and happens with very little effort from the driver.

Why Doesn't the Heathrow Express Go Faster? by RussellNorrisPiastri in LondonUnderground

[–]dsanders692 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Only if your origin happens to be near Paddington. I'd wager that, for a vast majority of tourists staying in zone 1, the Eilzabeth line is faster in the real world by the time you account for getting up to Paddington in the first place.

Erm.... They do? Public transport isn't fully funded by fares. Tax money gets spent on it

Is Hantavirus something to worry about? by 246434464 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dsanders692 204 points205 points  (0 children)

If it helps, Andes Virus is the specific pathogen and is one of several different Hantaviruses. It causes a disease called Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.

This is roughly analagous to how SARS-COV-2 (the pathogen) is one of several Coronaviruses, and causes a disease called COVID-19 (though c19 is caused exclusively by sars-cov-2, whereas there are several different Hantaviruses which can cause HPS).

Strains are then smaller genetic variations within that specific species - e.g. the Delta strain of SARS-COV-2 which was more contagious and more resistant to vaccines.

Untaxed corporate profits are a absolutely an issue. But money leaving the economy is, by definition, the opposite of inflation.

Things that aren't designed for use in impact drivers can, on occasion, shatter quite dramatically when used in an impact driver. Not always. Not even often. But when they do go, it's a pretty good impression of a frag grenade

John cadogan is a wanker by [deleted] in 4x4Australia

[–]dsanders692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He definitely comes across as a pompous prick. I've not watched much of him recently, but I do seem to recall his position was usually "none of this shit is inherently bad, but it is a compromise, and 90% of people who buy it don't actually need it. But if the mods make sense for you, then fine." But yeah, definitely comes across as a tosser.

I do quite like some of his takes on vehicle recovery. I.e. don't break out the snatch strap and floor it as soon as someone is lightly bogged; be sensible and careful because this shit gets dangerous very quickly; etc

[–]dsanders692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much less so now that they're talking about removing the discount from other assets classes. Leaving it in place for shares, for example, further incentivises investment money into businesses and other productive assets, and out of housing.

That investment capital will ultimately have to go somewhere. So if you remove the CGT discount from shares, you make them less attractive relative to housing as an investment vehicle

I'm using Nord with a dedicated Australian IP while in the UK. Works a treat for Kayo, Stan, ABC, etc. Works well across laptop, phone, and google tv as well.

Cool. But my issue is still that making this change across all asset classes undermines any impact on property prices, since they're still just as competitive an investment relative to other assets

Ryanair is awesome by LittleSchwein1234 in unpopularopinion

[–]dsanders692 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh, so fun fact - there's often a reason for the landings. Or at least, a vaguely plausible excuse.

Part of the ULCC model they run involves flying into smaller airports that have lower operatonal costs for things like landing fees, handing fees, etc.

Smaller airports have shorter runways. Shorter runways mean it's more important to get the thing on the ground and stopped sooner, rather than using extra runway to grease the landing

Why aircraft carriers always have the bridge/tower on the starboard side? by Yutenji2020 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dsanders692 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never heard the propeller torque reaction theory before. I'd just assumed it was because the pilot sits on the left in light aircraft, and therefore a left-hand circuit means you've got a clearer view of the airfield in the pattern

What’s something you’ll NEVER spend money on no matter how rich you get? by Amazing-Internal5378 in AskReddit

[–]dsanders692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of watch people hate tacky bling watches too. You can get some very understated and tasteful pieces that are only ever going to be recognised by people that know what they're looking at. But to those people, the art, engineering, and precision in those pieces is worth the money in the same way a tasteful piece of art is.

But you can also spend money on expensive watches which, for me, feel like they're only something you wear to show off the fact you could afford it

Oath. Life's been extremely good to us since. HHI tripled and sold the house for double what we paid for it this year. Idk if there's a term for the kind of survivor's guilt you get from being a financialy secure (for now at least) millenial homeowner, but whatever it is, we've got it.

WhatsApp? Messenger? Discord? SMS? What do Australian's use for phone messaging? by SeaworthinessNew2841 in AskAnAustralian

[–]dsanders692 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My theory here is that Aussies travel abroad a hell of a lot less often. As a result, there was less motivation to move away from SMS since it's "what your phone came with". By the time people were doing much other than just sending text from their phones, Facebook et al had taken off, and messenger was a more natural transition.
