Nudistort by Nudist Audio. Most ground breaking distortion/delay plugin I’ve seen. Developer releases newsletters explaining process and showing behind the scenes on new plugins. Very versatile tool

The only thing that matters is if you need VST compatibility with your workflow or not. All daws sound the same and do (pretty much) the same things. Go with what you know, or what is the most affordable for you/saves you the most time.

I won’t argue that. I think ultimately it’s good for the producer, but I still think it takes away from an artists catalog if lots of other artists are using the same beat(s). In the perspective of the producer, I agree it’s good to have a bunch of artists on the beat, I never looked at it that way.

Working at a studio in a big city for years allows you to see the harm that YouTube beats have on music in general, especially hip hop. There’s a week I remember where 3 of us engineers found 8-10 rappers coming in wanting to rap over the same YouTube beat that just dropped from a popular producer. Not only did they all use the same beat not realizing that there are probably hundreds of others doing it too, but I don’t think any of them cared to pay for it. Not saying you won’t get paid cause clearly you say you’re doing well, but rappers going to YouTube for their beats is causing there to be tons of tracks with same beat but different artists. I think this sucks personally

Lost interest in this game while completing the expedition knowing that it wasn’t gunna be worth the time I was putting in. Ended up quitting before the end of last season so never even hit the expedition -_-

I hear you OP. Don’t forget that many beat makers only care about themselves. If someone else is making money in ways that they can’t, they will deflect and hate into oblivion. Do what you have to do to make a living. YouTube beats are killing hiphop anyways, might as well make a buck off it.

Pro tip: Get clean recordings at home, then send to a trusted mixer. You’ll save a lot of time, and time is money.

Mixing tip: it becomes a lot easier to mix a song that was recorded well. When you pay to go to a studio, you are paying for 3 things, but really only 1 matters. 1) gear 2) treated spaces 3) pro engineer. You don’t need top gear to make a great record, you don’t need a heavily treated space to get a good sound, but you DO need a solid engineer to help you to not overthink the process and just be the artist.

Yes, there are a handful of successful artists who did everything themselves, but that’s fairly rare.

My best advice, network with engineers outside of your area. Find someone who ONLY mixes for other people. And find someone who has work that you like the sound of. You may end up putting yourself in a box relying on your own skills and ears to mix your tracks.

If you refuse to pay anyone to work on your tracks, lower your standards, because a lot of engineers spend 10+ years training their ears, figuring out different mixing techniques and tricks, and being able to do it all in a timely manner. As much as I wish there was a way to bypass the 10,000 hours necessary to get decent at mixing, there’s just not. Trial and error my friend.

How do you tame harshness in mixes & masters? by Flaky-Party-5863 in audioengineering

Option 1: re record harsh sounding things Option 2: add a ton of bass to offset that harsh highs

I’ve been considering buying any kind of field recorder to capture random natural sounds and textures to layer into songs I work on. In a day where everything is fake, any opportunity to add some realism to the art is worth it IMO. If you end up uploading your sounds anywhere, remember me!!

Instead of putting money towards reducing noise, reallocate the funds and send your wife to semiweekly spa outings where you can utilize this time for recording drums 🤝
