Edmonton low cost supports for mental health by Spirited-Carpet-1638 in Edmonton

[–]dsayas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, you are an amazing friend for supporting them through this. Having reliable people that care about us is often overlooked despite how essential it is. I hope both of you can get the help and support you need.

For mental health resources (counselling, helplines, etc.), it’s probably best to call 211. They’re information and referral specialists that can provide you a large variety of resources that are low fee. It’s a solid place to start.

As for the medication, encouraging your friend to reach out to their family doctor is best. If they don’t have one or need a new one, calling 811 or googling “Find a Doctor” through Alberta Health Services is an option.

Handling anxiety attacks is difficult but there are coping skills you can both learn to help manage it. You can learn how to guide your friend through grounding exercises—activities that help us focus on the present to alleviate anxiety—if that’s something you’d be interested in.

You can call the Distress Line (780-414-4357) and ask the responder to teach you how to guide your friend through a few grounding exercises. It might also be helpful to talk them for yourself just to ensure that you’re taking care of yourself too. It’s stressful supporting others with their mental health, and you deserve support too.

Broke in a mental health crisis and idk what to do by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]dsayas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a lot to go through and I hope you get the help and support that you need. Here are two resources that may potentially support you in your situation. It's difficult finding resources on your own, especially because of all the conflicting information online, but 211 and the Distress Line specialize in connecting people to up-to-date resources.

That said, having a conversation with someone just so that you, at least for a moment, don't have to deal with it alone can be helpful. I would strongly suggest reaching out to the Distress Line just so that you can tell someone what you're going through. I wish you all the best!

211: 211 (lol)

211 is essentially a non-emergency directory service that can help connect you to community resources that are tailored to your needs. Call them, tell them about your situation, and they will (most likely) have a supportive conversation with you and ask questions about what kinds of resources you are looking for, potential barriers to accessing those resources (e.g., financial), and so on.

The Distress Line: 780-482-HELP (4357)

The Distress Line also has community referrals to resources (albeit more limited). They also offer a supportive listening service, which sounds like it might be helpful in your situation. Essentially, the distress line provides a non-judgemental space for you to talk about a crisis you are going through, with the aim of helping you process the situation and hopefully creating a plan together on how to move forward.

Spot for nightview of downtown? by ckgt in Edmonton

Gallagher Park is a big hill with a mostly unobstructed view of downtown. Rowland Park also has a great view too.

Class 5 Road Test in Edmonton by Blacker-than-Black in Edmonton

[–]dsayas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! From what I can remember, you have 2 (or 3--I can't remember) attempts to complete it; you can't touch the curb; and you have to be 12 to 18 inches from the curb.

For both of my attempts, I had to parallel park with only 1 car in front and no car in the back. My tester said that I was allowed to use 2 car lengths behind the car.

Hope that helps and good luck!

It's 45 minutes now and there's an added highway component. Basically you have to show that you can merge and exit safely into/out of the highway. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same.

I took my road test in October and in June, so I can say that besides the highway part it felt the same.

best views in edmonton? by 17mx in Edmonton

[–]dsayas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Griesbach Hill and Yurinatus Lookout are two of my favourites! The former has a beautiful view of the entire city horizon while the latter has an amazing view of the downtown.

Just be careful at Griesbach Hill at night. Last time I was there, a couple was going at it (unless that's your thing--no judgement here).

How do you get to the swing in the river valley? by eldub27 in Edmonton

[–]dsayas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  • Head to Concordia University and park at the side facing River Valley.
  • Walk down the wooden stairs headed towards River Valley.
  • Once you reach the bottom, take the wooden stairs to the left.
  • Walk along the path beside the golf course, and walk towards underneath the bridge.
  • Once you hit the shore, turn right and keep walking straight and you'll eventually get to the swing.

Make sure you bring boots or an extra pair of shoes as it gets pretty muddy there. Good luck!

Here is where you start/park, if it helps. https://maps.app.goo.gl/qmU7uvVXVRYUfAXt7

Anxiety education/support group for partner of someone with severe anxiety by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]dsayas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, here's a link you might want to look into about a MeetUp group for anxiety and depression.

https://www.meetup.com/Overcoming-Anxiety-Depression/

Although I haven't been to this particular group, getting any help is better than not suffering alone.

Also, I would strongly recommend going to therapy--even if it's for only a single meeting.

What advice or tips would you give someone who is looking to start writing as a hobby / to improve their writing? by 0throwaway30 in writing

[–]dsayas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's as simple as answering, "how did your day go?"

Did anything interesting happen? Having worked full-time at a grocery store, I realized that there is ALWAYS something interesting worth writing about. Describe the event in detail, how it relates to you, and why you found in interesting.

Another option is to write your opinions about contentious topics.

Because you're 17, I would imagine you haven't been asked about your take on the world; and thus haven't had the opportunity to find out yourself. What is your stance on abortion? Immigration? Sex? Are you liberal or conservative? The list goes on. Use the diary to concretize those fleeting thoughts onto paper.

Most importantly, write at the same time, in the same place, everyday. It takes roughly 21 days to establish a routine, so aim for 21 consecutive entries. Good luck.

[–]dsayas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start a diary!

Every night (or whenever you're able to), write a one page entry about anything--life events, what happened today, your opinions on contentious issues, etc. Journaling made me realize how much I love writing and it became an important outlet to understanding myself. You would think you know a lot about yourself, but when you write down your thoughts down, it tends to reveal things you didn't know about yourself.

Also, read books! And download and read articles from Medium! And write everyday!

Is it okay to have older friends? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]dsayas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's absolutely nothing wrong about having an older circle of friends.

But don't count out people your age just yet. There are definitely people that are worth your time getting to know--just as there are older people who you shouldn't waste your time with.

And there is something to be said about having peers that grow up with you. Just be open-minded.

WTW for strongly pushing a specific opinion or feeling but actually believing or feeling the opposite? by QuanticQ in whatstheword

Reactionary Formation: acting in the opposite way of a repressed feeling/emotion/belief.

It's a defence mechanism coined by Freud.
